15 Obvious Health Headlines

Health journalists get a lot of flack for selecting the sensationalized headline that borders on the misleading.

But sometimes they're guilty of the opposite, as well -- stating the obvious (a made-up example, for instance, 'SHOCKER: Fruits And Vegetables Are Good For You').

So we scoured the internet to come up with a few recent examples (and yes, we're guilty of it too). Here, a few of our favorites:

"Health journalists get a lot of flack"

They should, if they spell flak that way.

I hope that tax money wasn't spent on these studies. I've heard my Weight Watcher leader say every one of them!

'Don't exercise outdoors when it is this hot' should be a headline. The elderly shouldn't for sure, but there are a lot of teens who die from practicing football in the heat.

The slide show that is attached to the headline "Study: Some foods help shed pounds, others help pack them on." is really unhelpful, but the actual article it's referring to isn't obvious at all - it is refuting the assumption that losing or gaining weight is as simple as "calories in, calories out."

Essentially people always say all you need to do to lose weight is eat less calories, but the article suggests that what really matters is what foods are in those calories. Someone could be having a balanced diet, with the recommended number of calories per day, but because potatoes are a staple in their culture/household (and we're talking boiled potatoes, not potatoes plus butter or deep fried) they won't be losing weight the way one would expect. I wouldn't call that obvious, for sure!

Here's the only obvious headline you'll need:

"New Health Plan Takes Willpower"

The vast majority knows everything it needs to about health and diet already and needs no more "news" at all. It just piles up more of what we don't need.

a few dozen instances of voter fraud and it's an "epidemic" that needs draconian laws to counteract, which will disenfranchise untold how many voters is all right... but tens of thousands of people are dying yearly due to what is acceptable to be put in our food supply and it's fine and making laws mandating better standards is un-American?
