Al Sharpton Brings Baggage, Conflict Of Interest And No Discernible Talent To MSNBC

Sharpton

First Posted: 07/28/11 04:01 PM ET Updated: 09/27/11 06:12 AM ET

It seems that during the time I was out of the country, The Powers That Be at MSNBC decided to replace "Young Turks" host Cenk Uygur with civil rights movement celebrity Al Sharpton as host of the 6 p.m. hour. This move was confusing at first -- I naturally assumed that what I was seeing on the teevee was a result of jet lag or drunkenness, or that my Virgin Atlantic flight had flown through a wormhole into a parallel dimension (Richard Branson features this option on a select number of international flights). But I've come to understand that this Al Sharpton-on-MSNBC stuff is actually a real thing happening in our lives.

And that's pretty interesting, seeing as there's no evidence whatsoever that Sharpton has any real talent for hosting a television show or covering the news of the day. Sharpton's well known, of course, for being a fiery and exciting orator with genuine rhetorical talent. Being stuck behind a desk and staring at a teleprompter, however, doesn't seem to suit him at all. In a more restrained space, his speech is halting and tentative, his focus seems scattered, and but for the adequate amplification technologies being deployed, you'd have to term the show "mumblecore."

And whether he feels reined in by the politesse of hosting, or is just generally at sea in his new format, there's nothing in Sharpton's performance that suggests he has command of the conversation. If I were in ideological opposition to Sharpton, I'd be only too eager to go on his show -- he seems uniquely incapable of getting the upper hand in an argument.

So, what, if anything, does Sharpton bring to the table? Well, as Wayne Barrett reports in The Daily Beast, Sharpton's appeal may stem from the fact that he's already been such a fine company man to NBC, having played an important role in facilitating the network's merger with Comcast:

It’s gone remarkably unnoticed that Sharpton was the first major black leader to endorse the Comcast merger, which met fierce resistance. Michael Copps, a Democrat who’d served on the FCC since 2001, declared, when he ultimately voted against it, that the merger “erodes diversity, localism and competition” and was “a huge boost for media industry (and digital industry) consolidation” as well as “a stake in the heart of independent content production,” charges that were echoed in a New York Times editorial. But Mignon Clyburn, the daughter of South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn and the only minority member on the FCC, threw her decisive support behind the deal, citing a comprehensive diversity memorandum of agreement (MOU) signed by Sharpton as a mechanism that “will serve to keep the new entity honest in promoting diversity.”

Without Clyburn, FCC chair Julius Genachowski, the third Democrat on the commission, seems unlikely to have backed the deal, which he did a week after the MOU was sent to the FCC. The MOU was significant because it countered opposition from Jesse Jackson, a variety of black organizations, and some black House Democrats.

So, Sharpton gets a gig in return for doing the suits a solid -- that's some sweet, sweet synergy right there! (And Barrett has a lot more to report on that, so please go read the whole thing.) But sadly, this little transaction isn't without some additional baggage that puts MSNBC in a potential bind, journalistically speaking. I'll let Glenn Greenwald explain:

On Sunday, Cenk Uygur was interviewed by CNN's Howard Kurtz about Uygur's departure from MSNBC, and Ugyur claimed that Al Sharpton -- widely reported to be his replacement -- vowed in a 60 Minutes interview never to criticize President Obama under any circumstances. When I first heard Uygur make this claim, I assumed it was hyperbole -- until I watched the video and read the transcript of the Sharpton interview. The 60 Minutes segment was aired on May 19, 2011, and chronicles what it calls Sharpton's "metamorphosis: today he's down right tame. So much so, that he has made his way into the establishment." It includes this:

"Sharpton told us that having a black president is a challenge: if he finds fault with Mr. Obama, he'd be aiding those who want to destroy him. So he has decided not to criticize the president about anything -- even about black unemployment, which is twice the national rate."

Naturally, I've no beef with anyone on cable news opting to defend the things they find defensible. But Sharpton's position here isn't to defend the president on what he sees as the merits -- it's to furnish an amen corner. Greenwald states the obvious: "Holding people in political power accountable is the prime function -- the defining feature -- of a journalist, including a pundit; if you expressly and publicly vow never to do that, how can you possibly be credibly presented as being one?"

Well, you can't! But the good news is that Sharpton doesn't appear able to muster much on-air talent to defend anyone, anyway, about anything. So maybe this is all a wash. The good news for MSNBC is that Sharpton will probably continue to beat CNN in the 6pm time slot -- unless CNN makes a bold move to improve their offering by, say, pointing a television camera at a coatrack for an hour, or something.

Rev Al has more personality in his pinkie ring than all the other talk show hosts combined. He'll eventually loosen up and then watch his ratings skyrocket.

As for the no talent headline, Al Sharpton is one of the most witty and intelligent people on the tv. He knows the issues inside and out. He has wisdom, as life will teach you. I've seen his growth over the years. What is your yardstick to judge, and who made you God to say what, and how much talent anyone has? From what I've read, it might be a wise thing to do, to question your talent, or lack thereof. What baggage, did he murder someone? Everyone has made mistakes, but to hold someone hostage to a decision to support someone who, may or may not have been telling the truth, in the distant past, is ridiculous.

I find Al Shapton hilarious on MSNBC - I am almost embarrassed for him. However when I think of Tawana Brawley and the Duke lacrosse players I get over that quickly. He sounds downright stupid with his stone faced angry yelling and strong stereotypical Amos 'n Andy accent (which is the elephant in the room by the way). All the white liberal guests are pretending he doesn't sound like an uneducated fool during interviews - very entertaining.

Al Sharpton may be fine and interesting as a guest, but not as a host.

Myth 1 - Cenk was replaced because Sharpton got better ratings for two weeks while Cenk was on vacation.

Cenk was told he wouldn't be getting the show BEFORE Sharpton filled in for him. This was at the end of June. That in and of itself makes Sharpton's ratings totally irrelevant to this story. In his announcement on TYT Cenk correctly points out that once he (to an extent) started doing the show his way the ratings went up AND that in the 3 months that make up Q2 of 2011 he beat CNN and improved on Schultz'z ratings from last year (he praises Schultz in that clip btw).

Myth 2 - Cenk was demoted, then fired when he didn't accept the demotion.

Cenk was offered a weekend show/contributor role for double the money. Can you think of any other jobs in which you get less responsibility and exposure and a gigantic raise? Also, the NY Times reported that he was well liked at MSNBC but more importantly here's a direct quote from an MSNBC spokesman:

"...we were working on a new contract, to develop him into an even bigger television talent..."

Myth 3 - Cenk is unemployed/he hosts some obscure web show.

Thanks for the attempt to enlighten others with the truth. There are many who will still not want to know the facts, so that they can hold on to their incorrect assumptions.

If you wish to watch a black commentator never criticize a black President just because he is a black man, even though a black Professor at Princeton University (Cornel West) called Barack Obama the "black mascot of Wall Street", then watch Al Sharpton. I personally welcome news analysis not based on race.
09:22 PM on 07/31/2011
Rev. Al Sharpton is a person who tells it like he see it, without regard to racial implications.
01:39 PM on 08/28/2011
If that is true, then I am Mother Theresa of Calcutta. Get a hearing aid, please.
02:01 AM on 08/26/2011
What's the big deal? He did not say he would not be working with him to fix the things he did not agree with him about. Nor did I hear him say "because of the president's being black:. Funny that when a white person supportts or makes a comment, no one assumes it's because the other is white. Because of your own prejudices you're putting words in Al Sharpton's mouth. And whoooooo, two different black men have two different opinions. So you are the one person who is qualified to say who is right. Why can't it be that they just don't agree on everything? Can you believe that? What a bizarre thought. Not to criticize our president, but give him respect. Think what this country could really accomplish, if everyone supported and worked with the president, instead of demonizing and pointing out, spinning any and every fault and seemingly failure. Then his successes are washed over. Also, from what I've seen of Al Sharpton, I am sure he will let President Obama know when he does not agree with him, and how he feels about issues.

Al Sharpton has not yet...so don't hold your breath waiting for Al Sharpton to ever criticize a black president.

At first I agreed with this article, but as I have been watching Sharpton this past week, I totally think he's qualified and very interesting. It really surprised me. I basically said everything this blogger said; he's not good at this type of interviewing and commentary, but I'll be the first to admit that I was wrong. I like his show and I especially like how many black people he has on as guests. You don't find that anywhere else on anybody elses show. If he has decided not to criticize the President, good for him. Criticizing the President should not be a qualifier, IMO. There are plenty of these pundits out there who love to criticize our President. You go Reverend; you converted me.
09:25 PM on 07/31/2011
Rev. Al Sharpton stands for what he believes in. He brings forth an honest, respectful, and direct conversation. We need more people like him, who aren't afraid to speak the truth.
01:44 PM on 08/28/2011
Then perhaps Al Sharpton should just start a fan club, ooing and aahing and applauding President Obama, and pass out little ears for all the Mouseketers to sing his theme song, "B-A-R-A-C-K, O-B-A-M-A."

I find Rev Sharpton refreshing and I enjoy hearing the political views from someone not caucasian, and that could be anyone of any nationally. The news media should be reflective of our very diverse country.

Yeah, just like George Bush is in prison for all the deaths he caused in an illegal war. NOT! Wake up and smell the racism, Sharpton is a bigot.

Meant to finish that reply with: not on the same level as a black person, but at least you can get a feel of white prejudice in action.

It's easy to be stereotypical of Rev. Al Sharpton. What you should do is give him a chance to reach you with his commentary before you criticize him.
02:12 PM on 07/30/2011
Sharpton can hold his own when debating someone on the issues, but the fact of the matter is the guy can't read a teleprompter. It's worse than watching a high school newscast.

Note to people who use the term Racist/Racism without understanding: Racism involves promoting the Inferiority of one group, in a *systematic* fashion that helps to achieve the goal of Inferiority.

It is truly disgusting to see people who do not understand their own Racist motives accuse others. Like a child, they try to apply a new concept indiscriminately, without understanding how to use the term.

Sharpton is not attempting to keep white people oppressed by censoring his own criticisms of a fellow Black man.

He is following a strategy made necessary by white racists in America - he refuses to give them even more ammunition and power to attack a man who is hated from the beginning merely because of his skin color. Such Defensiveness was made necessary by the brutal power and domination of whites over Blacks in this country.

I am certain that white Americans in China would similarly censor their own criticisms of America, rather than assisting communist propaganda.

Sad racists: attack any idea meant to legitimately help a Racial group on the grounds that it must therefore be "racist." Helping to improve the conditions of Native Indians and Blacks, for example, is not part of a systematic effort to prove that whites are an inferior race...

I expect fairness and objectivity from all Journalists: if Sharpton is going to be a Journalist and use this position of Power, I expect him to be honest and fair about admitting it when Obama makes mistakes.
07:10 PM on 07/31/2011
I disagree. Sharpton introduced race into the conversation by declaring that he would never criticize the black President, Barack Obama. Rascism is discrimating on race. Race should never determine how we evaluate an individual's performance.

How do you think Sharpton may be affecting the attitudes of white individuals who supported Obama in 2012, by saying that he would never criticize a President just because he is a black man?! Do you think that wil get out the white votes to the same extent as they supported Obama in 2008? Sharpton is not the great unifier but the divider of races.
09:33 PM on 07/31/2011
Unfortunately, you cannot see past the word "discrimination."
Discrimination does not always equate to Racism.

Discrimination occurs frequently in Society, and is not usually against the Law...if there is a Good Reason for it - Read up on Bona Fide Occupational Requirements in the Civil Rights context of Employment Law.

You discriminate against Teens driving, buying alcohol and voting, for the benefit of Society...yet Age discrimination is Illegal in this country, in general.

Refusing to publicly attack Obama has nothing to do with trying to destroy white people's civil rights in this country, and as long as he is not trying to impose an inferior status on white people he is *not* behaving in a Racist manner....

Biased, sure...unfair...yeah...but he is not behaving Racistly, and his actions will not damage Millions of innocent people.

People like you try to destroy much needed social programs, because some help is given to minorities that is not given to whites.

You think that because such programs "discriminate" on the basis of race that you are entitled to label them as Racist. You refuse to recognize that such programs are aimed at improving society, rather than destroying the humanity of an entire group of people who have done nothing wrong but be born the wrong color.

White people who voted for Obama will continue to vote for Obama - because he is *Obama* - and Al Sharpton is *not*.
09:33 PM on 07/31/2011
That is his privilege if he has respect for the President. It's more than a lot of other people in this country. Rev. Al Sharpton is a civil rights activist. Many times he has been criticized for his attempts to bring about justice for people. You may not like him, but you have to admit that he will speak out on injustice.
10:55 AM on 07/30/2011
I voted for Obama. I could list my liberal bona fides, but, trust me. Lawrence O'Donnell rules.I, for one, never got a hankering for what Cenk Uygur was doing. However, Al Sharpton will NEVER catch a moment of my interest at 6 eastern or any other time. He is a rank phoney and a long-time race baiter. He has made a living on the backs of poor black people. He is the worst kind of duplicitous advantage taker on the public scene. So, now he is trying to catch on with this show. I watched 30 seconds of it and I now know that he is not in his element and what the heck is MSNBC thinking? When he is dragged on by Chris Matthews, Maddow or you name it, I have to laugh at the hipocrisy of this guy. He is, and has always been, a poor imitation of the original, Jesse Jackson. Sharpton ought to read "Shakedown" by Kenneth Timmerman and learn how to be a real con man. There is room for improvement by Sharpton. But, I won't watch him on MSNBC. Shame on MSNBC for putting this con man on. Cenk Uygur was utterly watchable in comparison to Sharpton. One thing I hope Sharpton does is the following: say a loud "I'm sorry" to those Duke University lacrosse players who he tried to bury after they were falsely accused of all those bad things a few years ago. Apology, please. How about it MSNBC.

You know you didn't vote for Obama you sound like your in the Tea party, and an obvious bigot. You wont watch NEVER then you watched for 30 seconds, get it together. sounds like your sowing sour grapes over the firing of your friend. I like Cenk, but more often than not he was completely out of his league. He brought little more than anger, often fumbling like a high school kid without the facts to dispute false allegations of his hosts. Almost every time I watched I was frustrated by his inability to draw upon readily available facts. Sharpton's progressive bona fides are beyond question
