LA Weekend Agenda: Fleetwood Macbeth, X Games, Unique LA
Macbeth with a seventies rock twist, an orchestra with technological prowess and a craft fare at the airport. Everything is a little bit off kilter this weekend. Good thing that’s how we like it. Rock it out, LA.
What: Fleetwood Macbeth
Why: Troubadour Theatre Company presents its rock & roll adaptation of “Macbeth,” as scored to Fleetwood Mac hits including “Rhiannon” and “Gold Dust Woman.” These classic jams somehow make perfect sense when paired with “to be, or not to be” and actors dressed like Stevie Nicks.
When: 8pm, $35 - $38
Where: Falcon Theatre, 4252 Riverside Drive, at North Rose Street, Burbank (818-955-8101 or falcontheatre.com)
What: X Games
Why: Day two of the 17th year of ESPN’s X Games features skateboarding, BMX racing competitions and probably a bloody nose or two.
When: noon-8pm, $5-$55
Where: Staples Center, 1111 South Figueroa Street, at Chick Hearn Drive, (213-742-7340 or espn.go.com/action/xgames)
What: LA Rising
Why: Expect an excitable and eager-to-rock crowd at this all-day outdoor concert featuring power trio Rage Against the Machine, Muse and Rise Against.
When: 3pm (doors open at 1pm), $69-$99
Where: LA Memorial Coliseum, 3939 South Figueroa Street, at Exposition Park Drive, (213-748-6136 or larisingfestival.com)
What: Unique LA
Why: Be ready to open your wallet at this two-day trade show event, which will feature more than 225 local independent designers offering one-a-kind clothing, jewelry, housewares and more. A beer and wine garden, craft workshops and a free photo booth will all serve as pleasant diversions from the already pleasant day of shopping.
When: Saturday-Sunda, 11am-6pm, $10, free for children 12 and under
Where: Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Air Center, 3021 Airport Avenue, at Stewart Avenue, Santa Monica (uniquela.com)
Why: Billed as an “orchestra for the ipod generation,” this outdoor music event will feature conductor Rachael Worby creating a live mashup of tracks by everyone from Bach to Bananarama. The performance will be supplemented by live musicians and singers.
When: 7:30pm, $75
Where: Caltech's Beckman Mall, 332 South Michigan Avenue, at South Wilson Avenue, Pasadena, (626-539-7085 or muse-ique.com)
What: Donut Summit
Why: Hit your local strip mall for a dozen of your favorite sugar glazed and then get yourself to the second annual Donut Summit at Elysian Park. Here, attendees and celebrity judges will taste test the sweet treats and then vote for the best in glazed, frittered, vegan, etc. Intelligentsia coffee will be on site for sipping and dipping.
When: July 31, 2pm, get in for free by bringing 6-12 donuts
Where: Elysian Park, 835 Academy Drive, at Park Road, (blogging.la)
What: “Grease” Jeff Conaway Memorial Tribute
Why: This screening of the 1978 movie musical classic is a tribute to recently deceased cast member Jeff “Kenickie” Conaway. The film and post-screening discussion with director Randal Kleiser will serve as a reminder why a “hickie from Kenickie is like a hallmark card,” and grease is always the word.
When: 7:30pm, $11
Where: Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Boulevard, at North Las Palmas Avenue, (323-466-3456 or americancinematheque.com)
