Elephant With Prosthetic Foot In Cambodia (VIDEO)

From Wildlife Alliance:

PHNOM TAMAO - In 2007, orphaned baby elephant Chhouk was found wandering alone in the forests of Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia. Badly emaciated and separated from his mother, this endangered Asian elephant had lost his left front foot due to injuries sustained from a poacher’s snare. The infection and severity of the illness represented certain death for a young elephant alone in the forest.

The Cambodian government requested the assistance of Wildlife Alliance and wildlife rescue and care director Nick Marx, who made the arduous journey and stayed alongside Chhouk for more than a week while his immediate injuries were tended to. When Chhouk had been stabilized, the injured elephant was transported by truck to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center in a difficult and treacherous 26-hour journey. [Text continues below video.]

WATCH:

Chhouk was severely malnourished, his stump was badly infected, and nearly 5 inches of infected tissue and bone had to be removed. After his immediate survival was secure, his long-term care was the next concern. Without a foot, he was suffering severe balance issues, and the strain on his hips and back would make his lifelong welfare unlikely. With funding assistance from SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, and technical support from the Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics, Chhouk was fitted with his first prosthetic foot in 2009. Because of his injuries, Chhouk will never be a candidate for release into the forest, but he is immensely beloved both inside Cambodia, and as a global ambassador for Cambodia’s threatened Asian elephant populations. Featured on television in Australia, the U.S., and Britain, he is an eloquent messenger to the world about the need to save Asia’s wildlife and forests.

Elephants are rough on hardware, and each year until he matures, Chhouk will need a replacement foot. As he continues to grow into his adolescence, he requires new prostheses to fit his growing frame and replace those lost to wear and tear. This month, Wildlife Alliance and the Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics fitted Chhouk with his fourth prosthesis.

You can visit Chhouk at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Refuge Center, an hour outside of Phnom Penh, Cambodia to meet him and learn more about his inspiring story. If Cambodia is too far away, check out this video of the inspirational elephant, taking his new foot out for a walk in the forest and a swim in his lake.

That was a wonderful story. So often we read of kindness and caring for other human beings but it is nice to see that caring extended to animals.

WHAT ?? Busch Gardens and Seaworld funding this? How can that be.. the "absuers" of all things animal ( note sarcasm ) where is PETA?? where are the MILLIONS of the HSUS.. where is Wayne/Ingrid ( two people one philosophy) posting here about how the elephant should be KILLED .. put out of its "misery" as Ingrid said about "Klute".. and of course about all "pit bulls".. and about all of the poor poor animals that PETA KILLS every year.. can you say over 97%..
HSUS decries "animal experimentation" . Hopefully this will not only help the elephant but will further the progress of artificial limbs for people as well.
Good work Busch Gardens and Good Work Seaworld.. so all of you naysayers.. tell us know whow these groups are "anti animal".. Where was HSUS.. on capital hill lobbying for more laws to remove animals from us.. where was PETA? In the back room killing more animals to fill up their walk in freezer.

Some people are good and those few give me hope. This wonderful beast will see to a few humans getting some positive karma points.
I hope Chhouk has a long and happy life and that there will always be money for his replacement prosthesis and people willing to support him.
Despite this I think it is only fair that on the Wildlife Alliance page one cannot donate to his cause separately. He is garnering attention, but he is doing it for all the wildlife in the world.

For every elephant that dies a poacher should be shot to death! This would end poaching. Death to poachers for a death to elephants is fair and just. The only way for a nation to put a stop to poaching is to make an human life worth the same as an elephant. Economic pressure wll not work and nor will prison sentences work.

I thought they were going to say landmine. 30,000 people have lost a limb to them in Cambodia you know, whatever they did to deserve the last 40 years has long been repaid.

You can see the elephant's spirit lifting when he started walking with his new foot. I admire the people who helped him.

Long life to him. Precious!

This is GREAT practice for unusual shapes and such that they are required to figure out as prostheticists. All amputations are different.

A heartwarming story that for the moment, makes other not-so-happy news seem insignificant for a moment or two.
