Rare Canadian Bear Photographed In The Wild (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 07/28/11 11:35 AM ET   Updated: 09/27/11 06:12 AM ET

From National Geographic:

Neither albino nor polar bear, the spirit bear (also known as the Kermode bear) is a white variant of the North American black bear, and it's found almost exclusively here in the Great Bear Rainforest. At 25,000 square miles—one and a half times as big as Switzerland—the region runs 250 miles down Canada's western coast and encompasses a vast network of mist-shrouded fjords, densely forested islands, and glacier-capped mountains. Grizzlies, black bears, wolves, wolverines, humpback whales, and orcas thrive along a coast that has been home to First Nations like the Gitga'at for hundreds of generations. It's a spooky, wild, mysterious place: There are wolves here that fish. Deer that swim. Western red cedar trees that have stood a thousand years or more. And a black bear that is white....

Scientists know how black bears are born white. They're just not sure why. The phenomenon, known as Kermodism, is triggered by a recessive mutation at the MC1R gene, the same gene associated with red hair and fair skin in humans. To be born white, a bear must inherit the mutation from both parents. The parents themselves don't have to be white. They just need to carry the recessive mutation. So it's not uncommon for white bears to be born to black parents.

White fur occurs in only one of every 40 to 100 black bears on the British Columbia mainland coast, but the trait is especially pronounced on certain islands in the Great Bear Rainforest.

The photos can be found in the August 2011 issue of National Geographic magazine, on newsstands now.

In a moss-draped rain forest in British Columbia, towering red cedars live a thousand years, and black bears are born with white fur.

Watch some fool of a trophy hunter kill one for his wall or for a rug.

I SEE a slice of Heaven here with more of Gods gifts to humanity. That said I have to put out there how We as a species or Humanity is arrogant to assume we own Earth..When Clearly Earth OWNS us and we are just 1 of MANY MANY other creatures that are "SUPPOSED" to be sharing this planet with each other. This is just a prime example of the respect, awe and compassion needed to Protect all Gods creatures...US included and we should never take for granted these or any Species will always just be here. The GALL we as a co-inhabitant of Earth to so totally disregard the Plight of any endagered species and allow the Habitats that Harbor them to continue to be destroyed HOWEVER that may happen. When you hear about any species,Tigers,Rhino,Bald Eagles any animal that has such low total populations and see we hardly do anything other then advertise that...an active role by everybody on the Planet is ALL that can save any of the animals that are so low in Numbers in the hundreds. Please all, Consider giving them a chance...we all need a chance to make things right for all of us

Beautiful. But the text is a bit overcooked. Deer swim. Wolves eat fish. That's not news to rural northeasterner.

No wonder the indigenous people held them in high esteem. They seem more enlightened than the followers of some book that says humans hold dominion over them.

Truly beautiful, but I wish Nat'l Geo would have kept the secret. Let's do the spirit bear a favor and forget it's there - and let that magical wilderness live on uninterrupted by human interference (with which comes, ultimately, destruction).

I saw a t.v. special on these bears. They are incredible and the indigenous people had kept mum about them for years to preserve them but are only now letting the world know about them because their pristine and very beautiful environment is going to be threatened by industry.

Any minute now - fat cat CEO's all over the world are going to start setting up hunting expeditions so they can have something else that only money can buy (if you're a criminal at heart and know the right people)
