Bernie Sanders Blasts Democrats, Boehner Debt Ceiling Plan

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) blasted the deficit-cutting frenzy sparked by the need to raise the nation's borrowing limit by Aug. 2 in a fiery Wall Street Journal op-ed on Friday.

Congressional Republicans "have been fanatically determined to protect the interests of the wealthy and large multinational corporations so that they do not contribute a single penny toward deficit reduction," wrote Sanders.

While he's harsh on Republicans, Sanders didn't spare Democrats, either.

"President Obama and the Democrats have been extremely weak in opposing these right wing extremist proposals," wrote Sanders, admonishing Democratic leaders for being too willing to compromise on progressive issues such as entitlement programs and the Bush-era tax cuts.

Sanders had specific criticism for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-Nev.) deficit plan, writing that it "includes $900 billion in cuts in areas such as education, health care, nutrition, affordable housing, child care and many other programs desperately needed by working families and the most vulnerable."

As the Associated Press reported on Friday, "No matter how the debt crisis ends, the economy will probably take a hit. The question is how big." The U.S. will either default, likely resulting in a spike in interest rates, or congressional negotiators will cut a deal that withdraws government spending that has helped prop up the economy.

Economic forecasting firm Macroeconomic Advisors estimated that Reid's plan would cut annual economic growth by one-fourth of a point through September 2015 and that Boehner's bill would cut growth by a tenth of a point, AP reports.

Sanders' WSJ column echoed criticism from economist Robert Greenstein, founder and president of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank. Greenstein wrote earlier this week that the Boehner plan "could well produce the greatest increase in poverty and hardship produced by any law in modern U.S. history."

Much of Greenstein's criticism of the GOP's deficit-reduction efforts centers on what he sees as an unfair reliance on cuts to entitlement programs to achieve target savings.

In a Thursday statement, Greenstein wrote:

The Boehner plan would essentially force policymakers to choose among cutting the incomes and health benefits of ordinary retirees, repealing the guts of health reform and leaving an estimated 34 million more Americans uninsured, and savaging the safety net for the poor -- or letting the nation default early next year.

Every time this great man speaks it reminds us what a real advocate for the people sounds like. If only the President had the courage to simply get on television and end the bipartisan charade and tell it like it is. He might even turn some heads of those who soak themselves each day int the misdirection and outright lies that pour out of Fox. Unfortunately Obama refuses to fight back and it will be this  Read More...

“You can’t be for big government, big taxes, and big bureaucracy and still be for the little guy†--Ronald Reagan

Government can make no one equal. The best a moral government can do is to treat it's people equally. -- Me.

Fact is if Sanders seized every dollar from every American Billionaire, next year we would be out of money. It just doesn't work. There is a reason the Soviet Union collapsed. Central Control of the Economy doesn't work and they just ran out of money. Just as we have moved further left into the Marxist nightmare, we have less money and more misery.

"You don't make the poor richer by making the rich poorer." --Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
You cannot build character and courage by destroying men's initiative and independence.
And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves. -- William Boetcker

A) The soviet union collapsed because it was in an arms race it couldn't keep up with, so instead of focusing on their economy, they focused on bombs.
B) None of your "You cannot" have anything to do with how the government should or should not spend it's money. Nobody wants to tear down the rich, we want them regulated and held accountable, we want our military smaller, we want hungry less hungry.

If it's ok to distribute wealth to the top, then it's ok to distribute it back down. You can't honestly believe that wages have been declining because people are not working hard enough to deserve a raise, or that profits aren't high enough to justify it. Unregulated business = poor middle class.

The senator could have pointed to the fact that the enforcement mechanism in the deal is 100% cuts, so if there is revenue in the "super" committee, the GOP has an incentive to trigger the mechanism instead. This is a structural bias in the agreement itself. For more, please read my essay at http://t.co/v3IbADj

I am so proud to have Bernie Sanders as my representative in Washington. I've met him in person and he is so down to earth. I totally agree with him regarding this debt ceiling vote. I pray to God that the democrats vote a resounding NO. It's high time the very richest people/corporations in this country pay their FAIR SHARE. How much sense does it make to keep hurting the less fortunate(middle class included)in our society?! Maybe they need to think about giving up a cruise, expensive jewelry, their rolls-royces, etc; Our country is being run by THIEVES.

Yes Sanders, let the extemist off the hook. The ones willing to hold the American people hostage to get what they wanted.
You want Obama to act irresponsible like those who care nothing for sanity and the well being of the country. What do you think would happen, not only to the President, but the country, if a default wasn't adverted?
You either negotiate and fight another day, or you do the same thing they do, which is irresponsible and boneheaded. Many of them wanted a default, believing it would hurt the President. That is unpatriotic and un-American, yet many Democrats are willing to overlook this dangerous element within the US Govenment.
Republicans were willing to left the country go into default, that is irresponsible and dangerous. The President would never take such a risk in order get what he wants, he thinks of the American people first. The country is doomed if these people regain the Presidency because they have shown that they ONLY care about the rich and their friends.

Once again those who will pay while taking decreases in pay, are the ever dwindling middle class and ever increasing unemployed. While politicians continue to break the backs of the working people, who will carry this country back to greatness: the greedy rich CEOs of companies that may have caused this economic debacle to occur; the same greedy rich CEOs who keep their jobs as their companies fail and lay off many. I truly think not.... Again our leaders - both Democrats and Republicans - have failed us: no jobs, no real health care, no answer to an every growing energy crisis. Maybe we have too many millionaires in Congress and not enough people who "feel the pain."

I suppose you are for that Bachman who wants to make sure that the rich pay NO TAXES at alll and that is just fine for you? what do you call those OLIGARCHIC WELFARE QUEENS who pay 15% now instead of the income tax rate and that is after they have expensed everything incluing the Big Mac at McDonalds...while I pay SS taxes and income taxes and state taxes and property taxes all so I can live in a country that give tax cuts so that the rich pay 1/3 of the taxes that I do and that income does not even include their living expenses........get over it.....

I realize that you are uninformed so let me help you out here. If the ENTIRE wealth of the top 2% were CONFISCATED... all of it...IT WOULD NOT EVEN PAY THE DEFICIT FOR ONE YEAR...so go ahead a mullygrub about your 'plight'..You should be thankful that you are able to pay all those taxes. You are no different than the 60% of taxpayers who keep this country afloat..By the way, in case you haven't heard, last year over 48% of people paid NO INCOME TAX, while the top 10% paid almost 70%.
Chew on that for a while.

Bernie for president 2012.

Yep, the rich and their corporations are completely protected...and will continue to be....and, the Bust tax cuts will be extended when the time comes, maybe even given a larger cut.
The politicians are just about all multi-millionaires. Even if they went against their greedy human nature and actually voted to let the Bush taxes expire...they definitely wouldn't vote to give up the pile of money from the rich and corporations that flow into their pocketbooks in order to keep the status quo.

We need more Bernies and fewer Boehners in Congress. Boehner and the GOP are creating 3rd world conditions in the US to benefit Wall Street and the wealthy.
