'Red Tails' Trailer And Release Date (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/29/11 01:10 PM ET Updated: 09/28/11 06:12 AM ET

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, George Lucas conceived of a film about brave fighter pilots. No, not "Star Wars," but the true-life tale of the barrier-shattering World War II squadron, The Tuskegee Airmen.

Called "Red Tails," the film, about the first African American military airmen, finally went into production in 2009 under the direction of Anthony Hemingway. An ensemble piece led by Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Bryan Cranston, the production saga only got more clouded from there, including rumors of unhappiness with the story and/or footage, as well as reports of reshoots.

Now, after seeming to disappear off the face of the earth, the film has revealed that it will hit theaters in January 2012, exciting news for Lucas fans, historians and anyone who likes epic in-air action. To that end, a trailer has also been revealed, which you can see below.

Whether this is a harbinger of things to come for stalled Lucas projects remains to be seen; still stuck in development is his long-gestating "Star Wars" live action television show.

I was at this year's Tuskegee Airmen Convention. The Original Tuskegee Airmen present were thrilled with the George Lucas' documentary and the trailers. The documentary will air on the History Channel in October, I believe. It has interviews with the surviving airmen. Don't miss it.

It's about time. There needs to be more movies about these guys!

As a Tuskegee airman historian I noticed some errors in the trailer presentation. One is the bomber markings. The 15th Air Force had a big Y on the tails of the B-17. They also used B-24s with very colorful designs on the tail.
The P-51 B/C flown by the airmen in escort of the bombers of the 15th AF. had numbers not letters like the other Fighter groups.
All recognation of these brave men is well deserved and welcomed. I look forward to the film and hopefully the over dramitic explosions from bullets and B-17s breaking up from fighter attacks will not be distracting.

The HBO presentation wasn't all that great. I'm glad someone such as Lucas is in control of this one. They story line and the special effects should be great. As a Black child I never heard of the Tuskegee Airman until it was learn in a Black history course I took.

I was apalled that this story was not presented, as not Black History but as American History, much like the movie "Glory" about the feat of Black infantries in he Civil war.

Truth be told, had American historians put these things in history books, there would have been no need for a Black History month.

True Black History is American history but there is a mindset in some school systems that the worst thing in the world is for African American kids to learn their history because some feel they won't feel American. Well, this couldn't be further from the truth. When you teach these kids their history as well as other's history, it gives them a sense of pride and helps to ground them. If they cannot see themselves in the context of how things came to be, they feel outside of whatever history is being taught, feel outside of this culture and country and thus are doomed to repeat the past since they didn't learn the lessons.
They need to see themselves in not only Crispus Atticks, the first to fall in the Revolutionary War and half African/Native Indian but also the past of Africa which, ultimately is everyone's history since humanity started there, language started there.
There is a need to not only teach this history but also just how mixed this country is. The phrase "no taxation without representation" was started by a band of mixed race people in the south. Looks a lot better than the one HBO did with Lawrence Fishburne and Andre Braugher.

I hope they try to use as many actual P-51's and chill out with the CG. Although, if Lucas is doing this then I am prob asking too much. The P-51 is my favorite aircraft of all time, next to the F-16.
