Weekend Agenda: Dragon Boat Fest, 'Pineapple Express,' Elevator Theater

Posted: Updated:

Hey, wenches and knaves -- this is the last weekend to get medieval at the Renaissance Festival. But if you’ve decided to go corset-less, there’s plenty more happening this weekend in Denver. Here’s the best of it.

Untitled #39: Catch theatrical performances in a freight elevator, strike a pose with Breathe Yoga, get down with live music, or tell all in an on-site confessional booth at this Friday’s eclectic Denver Art Museum event. This week’s theme: “It’s Complicated.”
Fri., July 29, 6pm - 10pm; included with general admission
Denver Art Museum, 100 W. 14th Avenue Pkwy; 720-865-5000

Singles Safari: It’s a jungle out there… well, at least a zoo. Enjoy this singles event at the Denver Zoo where admission includes drinks and appetizers. Ages 21 and over only.
Fri., July 29, 7pm - 10pm; $35
Denver Zoo, 2300 Steele St.; 303-376-4800

Grease is the Word: Channel your inner Sandy Olssens and Danny Zukos for this family sock hop -- even the prices are throwbacks to the ‘50s. Performances of Grease: School Edition can be seen after the dance with cast members making earlier appearances.
July 29 - 30 at 5:30pm, 7pm performance; $1/sock hop, $10/performance (tickets at the door)
Denver School of the Arts, 7111 Montview Blvd.; 720-424-1810

Comedy of Bobcat Goldwaith: Laugh away your troubles with Bobcat’s hilarious perspective on life. Along with an impressive background including “The Police Academy” movies and “The Simpsons,” Goldwaith has long entertained as a stand-up master.
July 29 - 30; $25
Comedy Works Downtown, 1226 15th St.; 303-595-3637

Dragon Boat Festival: East meets West as this pan-Asian cultural fest blankets Sloan’s Lake Park. Cheer on boats as they compete for the Dragon Cup, enjoy colorful costumes, join in on traditional dance and sample culinary delights. Check out Saturday’s opening ceremony for a dance performance featuring a winding 75-foot dragon. Free bus rides to the festival are available at Invesco ($5 parking).
July 30-31, Sat., 10am - 7pm, Sun., 10am - 5pm; free admission
Sloan's Lake Park, Sheridan Blvd & 25th Ave.

ABBA: Join other dancing queens at Red Rocks for a tribute to the ‘70s pop powerhouse band with ABBA – Arrival from Sweden. Authentic costumes and dance moves help recreate the era that we just. can’t. let go.
Sat., July 30, doors open at 6:30pm; $31 general admission
Red Rocks Amphitheatre, 18300 W. Alameda Parkway, Morrison; 800-745-3000

“Pineapple Express:” Extend your weekend to Monday with a showing of “Pineapple Express” at Film on the Rocks. This flick begs for a pre-party, so do it at the Trading Post -- or park at Rackhouse Pub and ride the party bus.
Mon., Aug. 1, pre-show at 6:45pm, movie begins at dusk; $12 general admission
Red Rocks Amphitheatre, 18300 W. Alameda Parkway, Morrison; 800-745-3000
