Obama: Republicans Wasted 'Precious Days' On Boehner Debt Ceiling Plan

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/30/11 09:48 AM ET Updated: 09/29/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AP/The Huffington Post) -- Claiming that the two parties aren't that far apart, President Barack Obama is urging Democratic and Republican lawmakers to reach a deal quickly to keep the government from defaulting on payments to veterans, Social Security recipients and others.

"Republicans in the House of Representatives just spent precious days trying to pass a plan that a majority of Republicans and Democrats in the Senate had already said they wouldn’t vote for," he said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address.

Now, he said, "there is very little time"

The Republican-controlled House on Friday passed a bill aimed at avoiding a debt default, voting 218-210 almost entirely along party lines.

It pairs an immediate $900 billion increase in U.S. borrowing authority, needed for the government to keep paying all its bills, with $917 billion in federal spending cuts. But Democrats strongly oppose a provision that says Congress must approve a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution and send it to the states for ratification before any additional increases in borrowing authority are granted.

In the Republican radio address, Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl said it's important for the country to avoid debt default, but said Democrats need to work more closely with Republicans.

"Republicans have tried to work with Democrats to avoid this result and put our country on a better path, but we need them to work with us," Kyl said.

"Unfortunately, after weeks of negotiations, it became clear that Democrats in Washington did not view this crisis as an opportunity to rein in spending," he said. "Instead, they saw it as an opportunity to impose huge tax increases on American families and small businesses."

Obama insists that borrowing authority extend through 2013, beyond next year's presidential campaign.

The Democratic-controlled Senate, with help from some Republicans, quickly rejected the House bill on Friday. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had an alternative measure to cut spending by $2.4 trillion and raise the debt limit by an equal amount, enough to meet Obama's demand that there not be another vote on government borrowing next year.

That defeat could set the stage for weekend negotiations on a compromise measure suitable to both houses of Congress. Obama said that compromise is needed by a Tuesday deadline – or else the government will begin running out of money.

"Look, the parties are not that far apart here," Obama said Saturday, claiming "rough agreement" between them on spending cuts and a process for overhauling the tax code and costly federal benefit programs. "There are plenty ways out of this mess. But there is very little time."

"We need to reach a compromise by Tuesday so that our country will have the ability to pay its bills on time, bills like Social Security checks, veterans' benefits and contracts we've signed with thousands of American businesses," Obama said.

The president also offered praise for congressional Democrats and some Senate Republicans who "have been listening and have shown themselves willing to make compromises to solve this crisis." He singled out House Republicans in calling on all lawmakers to show "the same kind of responsibility that the American people show every day" by paying their bills and keeping their houses in order.

"The time for putting party first is over," Obama said. "The time for compromise on behalf of the American people is now.

Democrats are the YES party.

YES to borrowing more money.
YES to spending more money.
YES to ignoring massive national debt.
YES to more taxes.
YES to use tax payers money to buy votes with handouts.
YES to creating multi-generational dependency on those handouts.

So every news outlet in the world is declaring victory for the t-baggers which means, of course, they are in charge and you type a post putting those three ineffectual boobs at the top. Your grasp on reality is slipping. I do like the word "oilgarchy" though.

Yes, Mr. President the GOP has wasted a considerable about of your time, which has been their plan all along -- keep you occupied with their nonsense instead of governing and leading this country out of this mess they created.

Mr President, you wasted precious years by not perusing any of the pledges you campaigned on. You had everyone behind you, a green light to turn it all around, and you blew it.

Someone wrote here, in response to a comment I made about the 14th Amendment 'option', that the Constitution does not give the President budgetary powers. Excuse me, I'm going to go into Capital letters here---THE DEBT CEILING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BUDGET, IT NEVER HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE BUDGET. Now--back to normal letters.
What the 14th Amendment says is this: "The public Debt of the United States shall NOT be questioned.' That's the FIRST sentence. Even though it was a REPUBLICAN (back to caps here) PRESIDENT and CONGRESS that BORROWED US INTO THIS MESS---THIS President is ACKNOWLEDGING it. And he is saying--that the UNITED STATES PAYS ITS BILLS.
Saying that SPENDING CUTS will get us that revenue is a falsehood, a fantasy, a myth. Saying that THIS President wants a blank check is a falsehood, a LIE, a fantasy. The money in this 'debt ceiling' has already been spent and there seems to be a shortfall in TAXES to pay for any additional spending in the FIRST place, thanks the the BUSH TAX CUTS. I repeat, it is the DUTY of the President to 'defend and protect the Constitution of the United States' and therefore, instructing Treasury Secretary Geithner to PAY OUR BILLS, ALL OF THEM, is part of the job. It is NOT an impeachable offense.

Bush passed two sets of tax cuts. The first was upon coming into office. The second was in 03. Unemployment had been increasing since before he entered office. I believe the revised dates of the recession that Bush inherited now started in March, 2001. The dotcom boom had gone bust and there was a slow down. That was nobodies fault. The dotcom BOOM had nothing to do with who was the president either. It simply just happened as the world embarked on new technology.

By June, 2003, the unemployment rate had climbed to 6.3%. Whether you credit the Bush tax cuts are not, within 18 months, the unemployment had dropped to 4.4.%. For the duration of Bush's 8 years, his unemployment average is at 5.2%. Those that support tax cuts will argue that the added revenue to the treasury from Bush's outstanding unemployment rate considering he endured 9/11 at the outset more than offset any cuts to the tax code.
How is the housing market doing and what did Barney Frank say when Bush and other repubs advised the dems in 06 what Frannie and Freddie were headed towards? They claimed they didn't see any signs that there were any problems. It's all on You tube sweetie. Look it up. Who repealed the Glass-Steagall Act? That would be Clinton. And did the financial industry suffer because of it? Yes. And did Bush have to save the financial industry by passing TARP? Yes

Obama will get a place in history reserved for our greatest presidents; if for no other reason than the AHCA. Hawaii has the grandfather of the AHCA. We've had it since 1974. And, we have amassed a mountain of data that proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the AHCA is the greatest thing to ever happen to health care in America. Hawaii has also proven that opponents of the AHCA are knuckle draggers. (can't get anything stronger through this).

I am so disappointed in Obama I could cry! He is letting the Republicans walk all over him. I wonder if after the Republican plan goes into effect if the Democrats will be so outraged they will all come out and vote in the election, this is the only hope I see down the road.

I bet Hillary would have been prepared for all this lunacy and I think she would have been tough as nails.

I am so disappointed in you. We have never had a president accomplish more in 2.5 years. We have never had a president have to do it against such oppositioon dedicated to nothing else but the make him fail. Never has this nation ever seen a filibuster iron curtain before. Never has this been done to the 43 previous presidents....only to president 44. So, what is so different about 44 from his 43 predicessors? I know. You know. And, I know you know.

It appears Obama has caved, agrees to $1 cut for every $1 in debt increase....No New Taxes.
Let the blood letting begin. cuts in Medicare, Social Security but not $1 dollar cut from politicians paychecks or their staffs.

Try to keep in mind that the Bush tax cuts expire automatically in 2012. There is 4 trillion over 10 years right there.

Then why did the President extend the Obama Tax Cuts
06:18 PM on 07/31/2011
We need tax loopholes closed on top of that, this country needs to get rid of this debt quickly.

We already do. I am blessed to be in the bluest of the blue states. How blue? Well, we have 26 state senators, 25 Ds and I R. We have a 37 year old version of Obamacare. It is better than it has ever been advertised to be. We have among the lowest taxes. And, we have unemployment that is just below 6%. And, best of all, we do not have a Tea Party.

Obama's deficits analyzed. The economy fell off a cliff taking tax revenues with it. Millions lost their jobs spiking demand on government services like, unemployment insurance and all forms of welfare. The combination of plunging tax revenues and soaring demands on government services created one of the worst deficit situations in history. Then President Obama was sworn in. DUH !!!

And your genius got the economy moving in a better way? Nope!

First off, Obama campaigned on how BAD things were getting after gas went to $4 a gallon due to Middle East unrest. It was a self professing prophecy, the economy went further into the tank under Obama. He then keeps ridiculing those who work to employ others. The economy will not grow under this anti-business President.
