Debt Ceiling Deal: Reaction To The Agreement Runs Hot And Cold

First Posted: 08/01/11 02:29 PM ET   Updated: 10/01/11 06:12 AM ET

On Sunday night, President Obama and congressional leaders announced that they had reached a bipartisan deal to raise the debt ceiling -- but that doesn't mean all parties are happy.

HuffPost's Mike McAuliff and Sam Stein have all the details on the deal, which would allow President Obama to raise the debt ceiling by about $1 trillion in exchange for offsetting cuts enacted over the next 10 years. A second round of cuts would be decided by a bipartisan committee of 12 lawmakers charged with finding an additional $1.5 trillion in savings by Thanksgiving.

Members of the progressive and Tea Party caucuses have been decidedly disappointed with the deal, with those on the right claiming it doesn't cut enough, and those on the left saying it cuts too much. Other party leaders have expressed more optimism, urging their colleagues to support the plan. And some just seem relieved that a deal was reached at all, after many late nights of negotiations.

Look through some of the responses to the proposed debt deal and vote on the best.

Boehner: 'Merlot And A Cigarette'
1 of 15
According to Politico, Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Penn.) commended House Speaker Boehner for his work on the debt ceiling deal, suggesting that he reward himself with a Gatorade and a cigarette.

Boehner's response: "How about a Merlot and a cigarette."

There are big companies that are owned and operated by the employees. Just possibly it is time for us to look at the Unites States to be looked at the same way. I don't see anyone but the thieves united in this country and when we have millions turning age 65 years old...not a good thing to be happening.

OK...at risk of being completely irreverent, isn't this just the worse picture you've ever seen of John B? There is nothing in this picture that says "trust me".

Given Obama's spending rate, we will be having this discussion about exteding the debt again in less than 6 months. At least we don't have any new taxes from this deal...yet.

Bernie, but what can we do? Seriously. I feel like I am in prison with fewer choices and even less control over my future.

I have never been able to figure out what all the fuss was about, the republicans helped G. bush raise the debt ceiling 8 times in his tenure. Whats so different now? If they want to play dirty then I would suggest the Democrats do the same.
10:42 AM on 08/02/2011
As to whats different (though I hated Bush for all the stupid things he did in this area, especially in his last year) the fact that Obama has spent more in less than 4 years what Bush did in all of his 8 years.
06:33 PM on 08/06/2011
The Bush tax cuts alone are 1.8 trillion. Obama spending is 1.44 trillion. Total Bush spending 5.07 Trillion. Why don’t you get on the next spaceship returning from the moon, on second thought, stay where you’re at.

Inexperience in the White House; the MiddleClass is being crushed and humiliated - Obama did not have the experience to hold this office! We need a Progressive UpRising!!

The Rich want us on the streets in our retirement and Obama is opening the door!!

Tell 'em Bernie!

"Despite Democratic control over the White House, despite Democratic control over the Senate, despite overwhelming opposition from the American people, a small minority of the members of the Republican-controlled House have successfully pushed an extreme right-wing agenda onto the American political landscape. It is an ideology which believes that despite the fact that the rich are getting richer, the middle class is shrinking, and poverty is increasing, all of the burden should rest on the backs of working people."

Boener and McConnell have the creepiest smiles I have ever seen. It's like their facial muscles are not used to being contorted in such a way.

In MHO, NO ONE should have smiles on their faces! The country our fore-fathers fought to bring about is being ruined!! Those that smile over this are smiling for themselves only, not for what they contributed to our country.

While GOPer Boehner is "Self Medicating" with Alcohol and Nicotine, on his FIVE WEEK Vacation, maybe he'll shed a tear for the 90,000 jobs on hold due the GOPers not funding the FAA. This also includes the loss of $200 million dollars to the US Treasury per week in lost
Air fare taxes.

The jobs exist, its just that GOPers don't want them to utilized. Unless they're successful in their Union Busting!

Now Boehner can cuddle up with his flask and missy for a five week recess.

"I don't think we gave away the store," Hoyer told Bloomberg News.

We may have given away all the merchandise in it, but we still have the empty shell of the building that used to be the Democratic Party.
