Labor's Discontent With Obama Surfaces Yet Again

Obama Debt Deal Labor

First Posted: 08/01/11 06:52 PM ET Updated: 10/01/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- The debt ceiling bill set to be voted upon Monday evening has left labor advocates in yet another precarious -- and deeply frustrated -- position. A president who began his term with the promise to not only stem the tide of job loss but also reconfigure the wealth disparity in the country has been bitten by the austerity bug. Moreover, there seem to be fewer and fewer legislative or political outlets for unions to explore.

In the immediate aftermath of the announcement Sunday evening that a deal had been struck, the nation's major labor unions bit their tongues, choosing to either carefully craft press statements or remain silent altogether. In private, however, the discontent was palpable. And it wasn't just driven by fear that massive spending cuts –- $26 billion in 2012 and $2.4 trillion over ten years –- would adversely affect workers or the unemployed. It was a touch more personal than that.

"We have now had at least three or more experiences of the president explaining to people that he has a plan and it is under control but the results don't match," said Andy Stern, former president of the Service Employees International Union. "He has an unreasonable Congress that doesn't respond to reason. So why continue to reason with them?"

"The sad part so far, which wont be as obscure later, is that everyone talks about spending in the abstract but behind every billion here is kids with disabilities or cities and states that have programs that people rely on," Stern added. "So when the appropriators get to work, I think people will appreciate that all the glee with which we made progress on spending will come up against the question of: at what cost?"

Despite no longer serving as president of his union, Stern's frustrations with the administration are still noteworthy. Among labor leaders, he still enjoys one of the tightest, if not the tightest, relationships with the president and his administration.

That his former counterparts declined, at least initially, to speak up in a similar fashion was a curious development, pointed out by more than one Democratic source. But it gets at the recurring frostiness of the relationship between labor unions and President Obama. Labor advocates, while consulted, didn't have a seat at the table during the debt ceiling debate, sometimes learning information only through press reports or secondhand accounts. But when the deal was struck -- decidedly against their favor -- they were asked to stay silent and look on the bright side.

According to several sources, Jon Carson, director of public engagement for the White House, made several calls to progressive organizations and labor groups before the deal was announced on Sunday evening. His pitch was simple: The debt ceiling forced the White House to confront a brutal situation, made more difficult by some factions of the Republican Party's willingness to witness a default. The president, Carson added, would now be able to "pivot" to job creation, including the creation of an infrastructure bank. By Monday morning, Carson's pitch was refined a bit further. Obama had protected Medicaid and Social Security from the first round of cuts. And while extending unemployment insurance wasn't in the final deal, as one White House official told The Huffington Post, "we will absolutely keep pushing for that."

"The slogan of this administration is 'it could have been worse.' Seriously, that is what they stand for," said one incredulous labor official. "They say that they protected those programs."

"I think it was unclear last week what the president and members were going to do," the official added. "Now we know. They did provide some protection to social insurance programs. They didn't cut them, at least not yet. But it is hard for us to look happy at this wreckage that was created."

As the labor leader noted, in the end, the administration added a touch of sweetener to the much larger, sour dish that it served the unions.

Specifically, union officials said on Monday that they are deeply concerned about the potentially steep cuts to entitlement programs that could result from the creation of a deficit-reduction congressional committee with fairly substantial procedural powers. But except for Stern's comments, those concerns were confined to anonymous quotes or off-the-record observations. Only when the House was on the precipice of voting Monday evening did another major player choose to weigh in.

"The deal forced upon the White House and the nation represents a form of economic malpractice," said AFSCME president Gerald McEntee. "At the least, it will slow economic recovery and impose more joblessness, wage cuts and hardship on America’s working families. The tea party held the nation hostage in order to advance an extreme ideology – at the expense of what is good for the nation and our economy."

The fall back excuse for Obama Democrats is "he's not a king; there's only so much he could do." Followed closely by "what would you do?" (Real mature.) Well, Obama Democrats, here's something Obama could do right now all by himself to stop this debt ceiling nonsense AND fire a shot across the bow to warn the teabaggers he's on to them. Ready? He should VETO the debt ceiling bill passed by the House  Read More...

What are the Public Unions and the Northern Unions complaining about now, they weren't able to get placed into budget debt deal? Let us scam the taxpayers to give more, to make me more of Rich man, give me the keys to company. We pay them, they still trying to take all our money. Every time you turn around the only people who benefited from the downturn in 2008 is the Unions. They are the only people in this country still eating steaks and shrimp at dinner time. We should fire the democrats for the Contracts with the Public Workers and the Blackmail tactics by private unions and put them out of work. We should not purchase any products made in those states where they are working to take the taxpayers now. Wisconsin being one they are now carrying that plan now. They are millionaires themselves. They live in better homes than I do, drive a better car as well. They have set themselves for life. Guest what, this is the Democrats fault.

Wisconsin Unioin workers are "millionaires themselves"??? SERIOUSLY??? Care to give any names of these millionaire wage-earners???

No, I'm not. But the labor unions and democrat organizations have blackmailed companies into my way or the highway. The policies of Reid and Pelosi- have put all businesses in the position- They can't afford to stay in business=State Taxes=Federal Taxes-old and new taxes coming in 2013. The union says every dollar you make over the output- Profit=you don't keep=I get.

Ahhhh now I see your problem, you say: "They live in better homes than I do, drive a better car as well. They have set themselves for life. Guest what, this is the Democrats fault."

envy -- the root cause of all evil!
Here is an idea -- get off your duff, get a good education and get a good job alongside those decent-wage-earning union workers, and "set yourself up", too!

To our Lincoln Community Pundit, history Lesson or history omission? Here is the point our friend omitted from Lincoln's address and the real point being made. Lincoln was a Republican and this section outlines what Conservatives believe;

"Again, as has already been said, there is not of necessity any such thing as the free hired laborer being fixed to that condition for life. Many independent men everywhere in these States a few years back in their lives were hired laborers. The prudent, penniless beginner in the world labors for wages awhile, saves a surplus with which to buy tools or land for himself, then labors on his own account another while, and at length hires another new beginner to help him. This is the just and generous and prosperous system which opens the way to all, gives hope to all, and consequent energy and progress and improvement of condition to all. No men living are more worthy to be trusted than those who toil up from poverty; none less inclined to take or touch aught which they have not honestly earned. Let them beware of surrendering a political power which they already possess, and which if surrendered will surely be used to close the door of advancement against such as they and to fix new disabilities and burdens upon them till all of liberty shall be lost."
--- Abe Lincoln 1861 State of the Union address

Go Figure...

Obama has been giving the high waged morons Trillions... and they still complain...

They wouldn't think about working like the rest of us... or Getting Obama to end the Foriegn Oil Slavery that he has us in... or Giving small businesses tax breaks, grants, and lightening the regulations so that jobs can be produced...

Without the handouts to the unions... the representatives might have to cancel a party or 2...Maybe they should start throwing backyard parties, like the people who work for a living do.

Yes, I worked at Chrysler... The Union Spent most of it's time keeping drug / alcohol abusers and people that didn't come to work... with a job. A straight, hard working, on-time person that needed representation was hard pressed to get it.

Our president is going to be disappointed when he realizes many of his base will opt not to vote in 2012. He and his reelection staff are so focused on winning independents, it will be at the cost of a base so disenchanted with seeming compromise and an inability to take the fight to the Republicans that they'll pass on the 2012 election. I'm sure the sense at the White House is that once a Republican nominee is named, the base will return; sorry President Obama, you're delusional.

I cannot be so irresponsible as to not vote. However, if there is ANY viable alternative to DEMS or GOP that has a good understanding of globalization and what it will take to move towards balanced trade (i.e., jobs), that person will get my vote. If not, I'm likely to write-in the name of Bernie Sanders.

Now that the Citizens United Supreme Court decision indicates that a Union or a PAC has the unfettered right to invest in elections, it is time for the working people to organize their own political party -- NOW!!! Quit giving our money away to the same people that are getting funding from anti-labor anti-worker multi-national corporations. Dont get wed to a position on social issues -- just address the economy and middle class / workers' rights. A party based on fiscal moderatoin -- not conservative ,not liberal.

Please do not give up your right to vote. it's a responsibility that all American citizens are blessed (and sometimes cursed) with. If you don't agree with the situation, vote for someone you can abide by. Choosing not to vote is "playing chicken".

Amazing stuff. I have never heard commentary before from such hardcore labor union advocates. I now appreciate how dangerous Andy Stern and his counterpart union advocates are to this country and the incestuous relationship union leaders have with the President and others in Washington. And, this is typical across the country with Wisconsin being a prime example of how much influence public service unions have over our political process. Apparently, these unions have been in bed with Democrats for years, but the sweet deals they have been getting fo years were not common knowledge until now with the across the board financial problems all levels of government are experiencing. Good to know.

Unions don't create jobs. They never have. They can and do protect jobs and wages for those who feel disenfranchised. Unions should never be mandated or prohibited.

A balanced approach must recognize that job creation requires some mutual agreement on what constitutes a working / living wage. WPA workers did not make premium wages but they did gain valuable skills while producing real infrastructure, goods and services. We need a Labor Party to focus our common values.

Agreeed!!! Stop wasting our money and support by giving it to pols that already receive gobs of money from anti-worker, anti-middle class, multi-national corporations. The working middle class needs our own candidates.

Unions don't create jobs. They never have. They can and do protect jobs and wages for those who feel disenfranchised. Unions should never be mandated or prohibited. They are a form of free speech.

A balanced New WPA approach must define what constitutes a living wage. WPA workers did not receive premium wages. What they got was far more valuable: confidence, skills and the knowledge that they were building the nations' future through infrastructure, goods and services.

Nation Building 101
WPA-Styled Direct Infrastructure, Job Creation and Development
We do it for every other country but not our own. Why?
The Democrats and Republicans have had their chance.
We need a Labor Party.

Its a love/hate thing with President Obama, here's the compromise. I'm allowed to belly ache and be dramatic and just bash Obama because his style (however successful) infuriates me; but, of course in the end I am going to vote for him, why lie. So in the spirit of interparty Democrats compromise, our disenchanted selfs will hoot and hollar until election day; and then we do go and vote for him anyways. What are you kidding, imagine the consequences.

What labor really needs is a return to hands-on CEOs with engineering degrees and a thorough knowledge of their companies' product line--not a bunch of MBAs whose only expertise lies in squeezing money out of paper transactions in which no value is added anywhere along the way (while the real value of a working plant and skilled work force is tossed into the trash so all the little men "doing deals" can walk away with millions of dollars in their $6,000 suit pockets).

Good point. I would like to buy "Made in America" not China. I am tired of making other country's rich--when my fellow American's loose their homes/cars/children's college funds, ect--you get the picture. Why do we support so many foreign country's--when our vets are homeless? Think about it.

8. Disengage NAFTA. That alone should get the job market going again.
12:52 AM on 08/03/2011
That's the thinking. A focus on jobs would, by necessity, require reexamining many partisan pet policies. A national labor party would need to stay focused on proven initiatives. Many would argue the effectiveness of the New Deal on ending the Great Depression. Nobody disputes that it put the country back to work building a national infrastructure that we still use today. I say we're worth it.

Doesn't Nafta help lower prices for consumers? In these days of super tight household budgets, do we really want to make the poor and middle class pay more for the goods they buy?

Seven of the ten House members from my state (Mass.), including mine, voted against this bill. As one of them said (sorry I forgot which one)," I didn't come to Congress to increase the poverty rate". Of course our two elitist Senators are supporting it.

The question is, is this president bought off or totally naive and which is worse?
