Heat Wave 2011: Records Broken Across The U.S.

First Posted: 08/01/11 02:28 PM ET Updated: 10/01/11 06:12 AM ET

The sweltering month of July has come to an end, but not before over 2,000 records were broken by high temperatures. The Huffington Post reports that some cities hadn't seen this kind of heat in 140 years.

Texas has experienced one of the worst droughts on record, the elderly and athletes alike continue to suffer from heat stroke, and large amounts of warmth and moisture were trapped under a "heat dome" that brought high temperatures and thick air to much of the U.S.

According to The Washington Post, trends suggest that "man-made factors are almost certainly playing a role in the heat's intensity." The article cites scientists who blame the heat in part on urbanization and a higher concentration of greenhouse gas emissions.

Heat waves preceded by a commercial. I'm done with this. Soon I'll be acting out the commercial before I disclose anything significant to my friends?

So now the deniers are trying to blame it on everything but greenhouse gasses. The sun is closer now... the sun is acting up, blah, blah, blah. I sure hope all the deniers work for industries that make profit off of emitting greenhouse gasses cause at least I can understand their greedy motives. Unfortunately I think a lot of the deniers are just imbeciles though.

All the deniers are laying low for now. They are waiting for the first snow or record cold day this winter to confirm that its all a hoax.

Wasn't part of the problem that the sun was closer than it had been in a couple hundred years?
08:35 PM on 08/01/2011
The sun doesn't move, how could it be closer? The Earths orbit does take it closer and farther away from the sun during it's yearly orbit, but guess what? It is closer during the time of winter in the northern hemisphere?

The heat wave is still breaking records. Come check out our temps in this barren desert of north Central Texas, otherwise known as the DFW Metroplex!

Roy Spencer's latest paper has gotten the attention of science deniers, despite the fact that reliable, non-creationist scientists say it's full of crap. Spencer is playing a typical creationist trick by blaming warming on random changes in cloud cover. In other words, he's claiming that the climate "just happens". It's an especially hypocritical argument, since the creationists don't accept randomness as a characteristic of the universe.

The deniers can't give us a good reason why they would give such special allegiance to one scientist when they think all the other scientists are incompetent or immoral. The real reason is obvious to most of us. Deniers believe what they're told to believe, without question.

NASA satellite data from the years 2000 through 2011 show the Earth’s atmosphere is allowing far more heat to be released into space than alarmist computer models have predicted, reports a new study in the peer-reviewed science journal Remote Sensing. The study indicates far less future global warming will occur than United Nations computer models have predicted, and supports prior studies indicating increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide trap far less heat than alarmists have claimed/

It is summer. It is hot. This heat is no more proof of global warming then last winter was disproof. Look long term and then you realize we are definitely seeing global warming.

Actually both winter and summer showed evidence for global warming, the question is how much it has to do with global warming, not if.

What was going on 140 years ago to make it so hot ?
I've heard that the sun has been acting up more in the past few years , too bad we can't regulate the sun !
06:39 PM on 08/01/2011
You are right. The sun has been acting up according to a NASA report.
06:47 PM on 08/01/2011
This is not true. The sun has actually been in a cooling trend in recent decades.

"Could increased solar activity be causing global warming? Satellite evidence show us that the solar cycle has only a slight impact on our planets temperatures. In fact, even though the last few years have been some of the warmest on record, the sun has been in a deep lull in activity. That means slightly less solar energy has been reaching the earth" - NASA (www.climate.nasa.gov/warmingworld/).

For those saying climate change is cyclical and not man-made guess what : THERE WEREN'T OVER 6 BILLION PEOPLE during the last period. If you're in a small room with no windows and poor venting, if some farts, you're going to smell it for a long time because it's not going anywhere. The same with pollution. When BILLIONS of people are spewing out toxins, it doesn't just blink out of existence; it stays here.
