Shark Jumps Out Of Water (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/01/11 11:08 AM ET   Updated: 10/01/11 06:12 AM ET

Sharks are a pretty captivating species. A surprisingly large number of movies have even been made based on our fear of them. As Shark Week kicks off, Discovery Channel celebrates one of the most amazing shark feats … jumping. In this Shark Week video, a great white shark is caught on film as it lunges out of the water to snatch its prey.

Earlier this year, a photographer unknowingly caught on camera a shark jumping over a surfer, and a photography team recently shared their photos of the great white shark “flying.” These sharks are known to lunge ten feet from the ocean to grab their prey.

In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, filmmaker Jeff Kurr said, "I know that Shark Week has partnered with several environmental groups whose primary directive and initiative is to get the word out that sharks are being slaughtered worldwide at an unsustainable rate."

Shark finning has caused controversy around the U.S. and the world, and Monterey Bay Aquarium's Mike Sutton says, "The collapse of shark populations because of overfishing is a conservation issue of global concern, and the demand for fins drives overfishing of sharks."

Two days ago I completed a 2 mile open water ocean swim in the atlantic. Yes I believe sharks and all creatures should be protected the ocean,it is their world, but darn while swimming and splashing in open water and unable to see below me, I always wonder is a shark watching me. I am a former lifeguard and I know all the statistics, however it does not stop my trepanations while swimming. And I will watch jaws and shark week anyway, and I will still swim in open water.

NOW i know why~~!!!

This is decent, but if you really want to see some good Great White footage check out BBC's Planet Earth: Shallow Seas episode. It contains excellent footage of several Great White breaches in ultra-slow motion.

For those who don't like angry fish, there is Mob Week on AMC hosted by Rudy Guilliani.  What a country.

I can think of a few Republicans I'd like to feed to the sharks, but I guess that'd be illegal. Would make for great television, though.

Yeah I guess when the Japanese and Chinese have depleted the shark/tuna/tiger populations what will the human male population do for their virility problems? Do what millions of American males do…take Viagra!!!

You may be right, Theborg, but I'm pretty sure I know that shark from the American Bar Association.
