WBBM Distorts Child Interview: Chicago CBS Outlet's Misleading Editing Of Kid's Remarks (VIDEO)

Four Year Old

First Posted: 08/01/11 12:38 PM ET Updated: 10/01/11 06:12 AM ET

WBBM-TV, the CBS affiliate in Chicago, has come under fire in recent days for broadcasting an interview with a four-year-old boy, and deliberately taking his quote out of context to completely pervert its meaning.

The story aired on June 30, as part of a package about overnight violence around the city.

(Scroll down to watch the distorted interview.)

It first describes the shooting death of 16-year-old Juan Batista, then reports on two other teens who were shot but not killed in the city's Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side.

"Kids on the street as young as four were there to see it all unfold, and had disturbing reactions," then-anchor Steve Bartelstein said, leading into video of an interview with the four-year-old boy.

When asked, "What are you going to do when you get older?" the boy responds: “I’m going to have me a gun!”

"That is very scary indeed," Bartelstein adds.

Only problem is, CBS edited out the rest of what the young child said.

According to video obtained by the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, the full interview went like this:

Reporter: “Boy, you ain’t scared of nothing! Damn! When you get older are you going to stay away from all these guns?”

Boy: “No.”

Reporter: “No? What are you going to do when you get older?”

Boy: “I’m going to have me a gun!”

Reporter” “You are! Why do you want to do that?”

Boy: “I'm going to be the police!” (emphasis added)

Observers say this is clearly a violation of journalistic ethics. “This decision reveals a lack of understanding of the very basic tenets of journalism,” Hagit Limor, president of the Society of Professional Journalists, told the Maynard Institute.

According to UNICEF's guidelines about interviewing children, reporters "have a responsibility to portray children fairly," and there is doubt as to whether such a young child should even be identified on television in the first place. Especially given that he was apparently witness to a violent crime, both the trauma that he suffered and the possibility of endangering his safety might have been reason enough to at least obscure his identity.

Beyond the ethical lapse, however, some argue that the story does even worse in its portrayal of the African-American community. “Airing a video of the boy saying he wanted a gun that edits out the context simply reinforces stereotypes that African American males are violent, even preschoolers,” said Dori J. Maynard, the Institute's president.

WBBM communications director Shawnelle Richie issued a statement on the matter, which was published by the local-news blog TVSpy:

We accept responsibility for the mistakes that were made, both in the reporting and editing of the story. The video of the child should not have aired. As soon as news management identified the problem, they took immediate steps to ensure that the video would not air in subsequent newscasts. In addition, we have followed up with our employees to make sure that we all have learned from the mistakes that were made.

I have seen the media do this for decades; this man should be fired. The station manager obviously knew this was being done. I'm retired and watch the news daily. I watch the networkds and the cable stations such as MSNBC, Fox, etc. I'm amazed with the distortion that occurs and how often the roll the same video over and over. It has become a hobby of mine to write down my predicitons of what will be said on a specific network and I am mostly right about the bias in the media. They inflame people just as the reporter did in this report. Obviously, the little boy is a goo boy who wants to help his neighborhood and I wish him luck and praise his mother for raising such a fine boy.

Don't watch NBCABCCBSFOX. This is blatant racism at work and if you don't see it then you are truly blind. Some of the best information from the street is right here in the comments section. Read what the people on the street have to say not the re-constructed news that they blare at us over the TV.

What did Fox have to do with this story? It was aired on a CBS station.

Had the child been caucasion, they would have gladly let it be known that he intended to be a police officer. This country is trying harder and harder to make Black people look bad but at the end of the day the United States will continue to pay for the wrong they do. God is still in controll.

"This country is trying harder and harder to make Black people look bad"

Indeed. I cannot imagine the effort that went into creating the Milwaukee flash mob hoax, but with modern computers anything can be visualized.

One more sickening example of how the primary purpose of today's MSM is stirring -- in this case creating -- controversy, regardless of ideology (the MSM hasn't been close to being liberal since the 1970s). If it bleeds, it leads.

When I graduated with a BSJ 21 years ago there was a concern that the bottom line, and the lengths print publishers and broadcast owners might go to protect and promote it, would encroach on ethics. Now the bottom line has obliterated ethics, even to the point of putting words in the mouth of a 4 year old to promote violence and fear, both of which still sell EXTREMELY well. Paddy Chayefsky couldn't have written a better scene showing the depths a once honorable and trustworthy profession has reached.

This story also relates to the way communities of color are portrayed in the supposedly liberal MSM (again, it's not about ideology, it's about controversy). It even happens where I live in Topeka, KS, where the vast majority of the stories dealing with communities of color involve the commission of crime (but there are NO stories on the socioeconomic causes of much of that crime) even though there are positive things going on in those communities.

The mainstream media is extremely liberal or at least leaning so far to the left it needs pontoons just to stay afloat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_bias

"The survey found that most of these journalists were Democratic voters whose attitudes were well to the left of the general public on a variety of topics, including hot-button social issues such as abortion, affirmative action, and gay rights."

"...Kuypers found that the mainstream print press in America operate within a narrow range of liberal beliefs."

"Although focusing primarily on the issues of race and homosexuality, Kuypers found that the press injected opinion into its news coverage of other issues such as welfare reform, environmental protection, and gun control; in all cases favoring a liberal point of view."

"where the vast majority of the stories dealing with communities of color "

What is that? What is a "community of color?"

How is it even legal (or even ethical) to do an on-camera interview with a four-year-old? Did the child's parent(s) and/or legal guardian give informed consent for the on-camera interview?

Why would an adult (journalist or not) engage a FOUR-YEAR-OLD in such a conversation surrounding a traumatic (murder) event? IMO, the better 'spin' would have been for the 'cause I want to be a policeman' to be left in the aired video. Why wasn't it? IMO, none of the video should have been shown--a danger to the child and the child's family.

Lord have mercy on us all.

This was their goal. No way would they have done this to a FOUR-YEAR-OLD WHITE CHILD. While libs/dems are and have NEVER really acted in the best interest of blacks...repubs don't either. More Blacks need to understand that they are on their own in this racist world. Did anyone catch the last bit of the vid when the child stated he will have a gun, and stated his desire to be a police officer and the idiotic journalist replied saying: "well I guess you can have one then". Yet whites wonder why they are viewed as untrustworthy...NOT TO BE TRUSTED...which falsely labels decent, open-minded white people. Racism affects...EVERYONE!

"What happens to you people that warps you in this fashion? "

Who is "you people"? (tm)

It's the water. Excess calcium ions. I distill mine but I suspect most people just bury the calcium ions in cola.

Seriously. Out west most of the water is alkaline, an excess of calcium ions and that also is were you find the more conservative, shoot-back mentality (and also generally safer citities).
08:15 PM on 08/10/2011
Okay, I exaggerated. It *might* have something to do with calcium ions.

There's 300 ways, off the top of my head, to handle this whole thing, the video the words the young kid the presentation differently.

But there was only one way to do it in such a way that the person who made it and sanctioned it and knew it would be absolutely the worst possible example of an ethical human being that I can possibly, possibly imagine.
They have to be, yes, the absolute worst ever.

Unfortunately 'journalistic ethics' seem to be as rare as the Dodo bird. If journalist were to question and report accurately I think that we would not be in the pickle that we are today. Can you imagine if the Bush administration had been asked pertinent questions in the run up to the wars or any other subject for that matter.
08:16 PM on 08/10/2011
"Can you imagine if the Bush administration had been asked pertinent questions"

Yes. What is harder to imagine is ANSWERS to pertinent questions.
03:48 PM on 08/05/2011
I would say I am surprised but I am not. Tony Burrell's book "Brainwashed" spells it all out so plain and simple. Not an oversight or simple mistake by this particular broadcast company, the news anchorman's report leads right in to the "surprising reactions" from children as young as four! Another blatant attempt through the media to make African-Americans look less than civilized
