10 U.S. States With The Slowest Internet Speeds

The Huffington Post   Cooper Smith   First Posted: 08/02/11 08:27 AM ET   Updated: 10/02/11 06:12 AM ET

Pando Networks, which specializes in cloud-based media delivery, has completed a six-month "Nationwide ISP and Network Study" to determine the fastest and slowest Internet speeds and download success rates for each U.S. state.

A side-by-side comparison of the 10 states with the fastest Internet speeds and the 10 states with the slowest speeds reveals striking dissimilarities. According to Pando Networks data, “the fastest state was Rhode Island at an average of 894 KBps, which was almost three times faster than the slowest state [See slideshow], which had a dismal 318KBps."

Generally speaking, Pando's report indicates that the slowest Internet speeds tend to be found in the country's rural areas. As social media and other online services become vital business tools for the agriculture industry, some companies are working toward solutions to the problem of unequal broadband Internet access. For example, Verizon and AT&T have teamed with four other telecoms to propose subsidized high-speed connections for underserved regions.

It’s worth noting that Pando's research differs from an early study conducted by Akamai Technologies. For example, while Pando Networks found Nebraska to have the ninth-slowest Internet connection in the country, Akamai’s report indicates that the Great Plains state ranked only 20th among the slowest states.

Check out our slideshow (below) to view the 10 slowest states, according to Pando. For readers who find themselves living in one of the states listed, we want to hear what you think of the Internet connection in your community, and whether you think high-speed net access should be a priority. If you're considering upgrading your ISP, then you might want to check out the FCC’s ‘National Broadband Map’, which helps residents identify the fastest Internet service providers in their local area.

Key: KBps = Kilobytes Per Second

The companies stay away from what they consider non profitable areas, then fight tooth and nail when someone tries to fill the void say with public internet, phone etc, the telecom act of 96 is a joke and we are at the mercy of the telcos and cablecos...............................

I do not think politics has anything to do with internet speed, as many of the posters here seem to think.

Could the large cities in some states have skewed the scores? Here in rural Western North Carolina we have very slow service. The term "highspeed" is laughable. I have called multiple times and asked why we get to pay the same as NYC, Atlanta, etc., for half the service...
Also, did anyone else notice that the states with the slowest service also tend to have the most pro-Tea Party voters? Does this prove that access to quality education (communication) is key to quality thought???

The Armed Forces is NOT a state HP!!! It is an organization and has no buisness on this list.

As for the rest, kinda funny how they are extremly rural Red States. Seems kinda in line with their view of technology.
08:34 AM on 08/05/2011
true, but!!!!! Since many in the armed forces seem to be rather "red" doesn't this also point to a lack of current and accurate information and it's effect on thinking (like anyone who thinks Sarah Palin and Michelle Baukman are great Presidential prospects? They are definitely not states, but valuable data....oh and I have 61 yrs. of being a proud Liberal to add to yours.

Surprise, the States with nobody in them have slow speeds. Who would have thought.

PS, they all have access to Hughes Net, Satellite Internet, so doesn't that mean all of America has access?
08:36 AM on 08/05/2011
I'm in NC and do not have access to Hughes just very slow Verizon/Frontier. Frontier blames Verizon...I say both stink at it and I'd love real highspeed as well as a choice in who I can get service from
04:00 PM on 08/05/2011
Hughes Net is Satellite Internet. It offers coverage all across America, including NC.

The choices exist.

I live by the beach in CA, one of the largest populated cities, and if you get 3mb for a reasonable price you are lucky. the telcos and cablecos have this place locked up. Don't get me started on Cell phones.
11:36 PM on 08/03/2011
Verizon provided my internet service in my 'slow' state until I and all other customers were sold to Frontier. Verizon was fine but Frontier service cuts in and out erratically and no one at Frontier knows how to fix the problem. So much for better service from the private sector than from government.
08:37 AM on 08/05/2011
AMEN!!!! You must live in NC (Western part)?

I got spoiled on the internet in college. Due to all the focus on computing/engineering going on there, Georgia Tech has the fastest internet in the nation outside the Pentagon. At least, that's what they say. Now, I get frustrated when pages (like this one) with something like 50-100 images, or videos, don't load up immediately.
09:27 PM on 08/03/2011
Since all of these are "red" states, I would venture to say they are also the states with the slowest brain cell activity.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Blackwater soldiers of fortune living across the street from our armed forces have much better connection rates.

Is it merely coincidence that the slowest states are also red states? Do Republicans fear the web?
