Dane Cook And Louis CK: Will They Address The Controversy On 'Louie' This Week? (VIDEO)

This Thursday, the oft-maligned comedian Dane Cook will guest star on "Louie," and by the looks of the promo, this is something you won't want to miss -- especially given the years of rocky history between the two comedians.

Via IFC's blog:

A look says it all, right?

Over the years, Cook has been a punching bag for other comics, with many accusing him of joke theft and plagiarism. And one of the most pervasive claims, one that circulated for years within the comedy world, involved Louis CK, himself.

A few years ago, the website Fugly put together a compilation of material from both Louis CK and Dane Cook, where Cook clearly covers a few topics heard in previous CK sets -- jokes about being powerless to an impending accident, naming your kids, and having an itchy ass.

Cook doesn't repeat the jokes verbatim, but the general concepts are pretty similar. Though, as the blog Dead Frog pointed out in 2007, these were well-worn topics in comedy (who doesn't have an itchy ass joke these days?) and it's difficult to say for certain that Cook stole anything directly from CK.

Still, the claim was enough to send cries of plagiarism pulsing through a comedy community that was already suspicious of Cook; his jocular style, aggressive marketing tactics and mainstream appeal didn't gel with the typically underground, subtler style of the burgeoning alternative comedy scene, and it didn't help that he was fast becoming one of the most famous comedians in the country.

In January, 2010, CK spoke to Movieline about the controversy.

"When I first heard it, it pissed me off for a very unfair reason, which is I just didn’t like the dude," he said. "He just bummed me out aesthetically."

Still, CK went on to say that he wasn't ever sure that Cook had actually stolen anything, and was upset that Cook might have "suffered" from that accusation. The two had since exchanged e-mails about the issue, CK said, and were friendly whenever they saw each other.

Cook appeared on Marc Maron's WTF podcast in June of last year to address the claims himself, and to also respond to a claim from comedian Joe Rogan that he had stolen bits from him.

"In essence, we're talking about, in my lifetime, in 20 years of standup," he said, "we're talking about three things with Louie and I, out of all the material I've ever recorded, we're talking about four kind-of concepts."

When Maron asked if he ever credited CK for the similar jokes, Cook responded: "I didn't credit Louis CK because I never stole anything from Louis CK."

Cook said he'd never stolen "anything" in his life, and any similarities between the two comedians' material was just a coincidence. "You talk to guys that have known me the longest," he said, "They're going to look at you and go: you're crazy to think that Dane Cook steals."

Cook has moved away from stand-up a bit in recent years, focusing on a comedic film career. This fall, he's set to appear on Broadway in Neil Labute's "Fat Pig."

Louis CK, meanwhile, has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on "Louie."

Tune into FX this Thursday night to see what CK has up his sleeve.

A couple days ago I came on here and shat on Dane Cook like everyone else, but I just finished watching "Oh Louie/Tickets," and now I feel a little differently about him. The fact that Louie had him on his show to "candidly" discuss their issues made for great TV, but I also think it's respectable for Cook to laugh at himself on Louie's show. It was all very meta and very entertaining; probably Dane Cook's best work.

Dane Cook has the looks and that's rare in comedy. I never thought he was the least bit funny but he is handsome. I'm sure there are plenty of comedians who are insanely jealous because he can transition to movies.

I am a actor who started doing stand up two years ago. I got bad news for you guys. Material often gets recycled and but thru that new comedians strainer. I had heard of Dane Cook before I ever heard anyone mention Louis CK. Sorry. What you fail to understand is each comedian finds a voice and some aspect of the audience will hear it. Just because you don't does not mean the comedian is not funny. You just dont get Dane, but I do. And Yes, chicks dig Dane. And his gelled hair is not bad because there are LOTS of guys gelling there hair to get attention. And that crazy pacing he does, his command on the mic, his stage prescence -- that is his f***ing act stupid people. I pay for it, so do other people.

If you heard of Dane Cook before you heard of Louis CK, you are probably not a very good comedian.

I'm sorry its just not Louis CK that he's ripped off. I've heard jokes that have been used by other comedians. Its pretty rampant in comedy to take other people's material. Russell Peters took a lot of Eddie Murphy's ideas. I do think Dane Cook is funny sometimes, and he doesn't have to rip from anybody else. Louis CK is original and raunchy. Dane Cook tries to be the good guy, which is against the grain for comedians. Most legendary comedians are underdogs, venting about society and cracking jokes of societal ills. Dane cook has no interest in that, and that can be boring. If this guy above is thinking that Dane Cook is a master of comedy, he's nuts. Dane Cook is a frat boy type who is not clever, he just has a frat party on stage, minuts the beer and jello shots. Good comedy comes from a dark place, from a lot of soul searching. Its truly an art. Its not Dane Cook, he has years to get as good as Redd Foxx, Paul Mooney, Chris Rock, George Carlin. He's not even at the point of the Blue Collar Comedy guys, (one of which, steals jokes too).

Dane Cook is talentless. Period. He reminds me of a baboon at Busch Gardens sitting blankly staring into nothingness.

I saw Dane cook on the comedy channel about 10 or so years ago and he made me laugh so hard I was crying. Highbrow comic? No. Comedians comedian? Who cares. Funny? Yes!

The hate on dane cook stemmed from spiteful comedians accusing him of various things out of pure jealousy. Stand-up is EXTREMELY competitive and cut-throat, comedians like to act like they're happy for each other but in reality they never like to see anyone besides themselves or their close friends get ahead.

True, jealousy may have played a role. But many comedians have legitimate reasons to not like Dane Cook. One being that he appeals to the lowest common denominator with his jokes. The other, and possibly more important reason, being that he stretches out and emphasizes his punchlines in a way that artificially gives them more laughs than they really deserve. He's not funny but his stage presence goes through the motions of being funny and many times people get confused and laugh. Anybody with any sort of interest in comedy can tell the difference between his act and that of a real comic. His audience has no interest in comedy. They just wanna see a clown dance on stage.

Larry the cable guy is worse than dane cook when it comes to doing the bare minimum for stupid people, he's not even a real person on top of it. He's also a lot richer than dane cook too yet people give dane way more grief than they give larry the cable guy.

Face it, people just like to hate on dane cook. Dane cook is more of an "entertainer" than a traditional stand-up comic and it pisses comics off because it gets him more attention than them. Anyone who tries to break the mold of traditional stand-up (like bo burnham) and tries to appeal to a wider audience gets grief no matter how clever or intelligent they are.

Stand-up is kind of a dying art too, a lot of people aren't interested in it the way they're interested in music, tv, or movies. People like dane cook, as mediocre as they may be, make a lot of people more interested in stand-up and that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

I wouldn't say jealousy, most of the hate is coming from him getting fame and popularity from using other peoples material, tweaking a few words and over doing it with his actions on stage to distract you from his actual jokes. That is just my view of this though.

When Dane Cook does his "comedy" about religion or lack thereof (he's very religious) he's about as unfunny as Dennis Miller when he's at his most right-wing.

I listened to an old stand up routine of his for about 15 minutes the other day and couldn't detect any funny material at all, stolen or otherwise.

Louis CK has been around a lot longer, i am sure hes learned his fair share of comedic ups and downs. Dane got too big too fast and now everyone is a critic? He found fame fast, most comedians take a lot longer or never make it to that level.

"Dane got too big too fast and now everyone is a critic? He found fame fast, most comedians take a lot longer or never make it to that level." The exact point why there is so much hate towards him, he got big fast, using others material, Running around and yelling all over the stage to distract you from the actual "comedy" hes doing.

Dane Cook has been a comedian for twenty years. Louis CK is funnier and slightly older. But Dane Cook has been around forever, too.

Louis CK is a comedic genius. I'd rather watch his show than have sex. Sadly, I'm rarely given the choice.

Louie is awesome. I'd hit that -- in a weirdly uncomfortable, far too analytic for act of reproduction kind of way.

Dane Cook just isn't funny.

I don't really consider myself a "fan" of either guy; I think they are both funny, but I don't seek them out or anything.
That said, I just have one question for the supposed Cook haters here: is anyone holding a gun to the heads of the huge numbers of people who go to see Dane Cook on stage?
If you don't like him, don't go see him, which I am sure you already don't. He entertains people. What's the big deal? He over-acts on stage and is too eager to please? Wow, isn't that something? An entertainer who . . . wants to entertain? And likes it?
I like a lot of different comics, but I will say this: Maybe a reason Dane Cook has appeal is that so many other comics are doing the "I-don't-give-a-rat's-a**" bit in their routine, like they really can't stand being there. Maybe, just maybe, people like to pay to see performers who at least act like they enjoy themselves.
Louie CK does rock, though.

Is it wrong that I like both comedians? Louis is a DVR-must and I think Dane Cook is hilarious ("I did my best!"). And yes, both are sexy in their own way.

I generally like most comedians. I'll admit it: I've even laughed at Carlos Mencia. Even the worst comedians can be mildly amusing from time to time... it's just difficult to sit through a lame set for a small payoff. As far as Dane Cook is concerned I share the aesthetic objections. Anyone who mousses his hair into a point or walks around on stage like he's stepped into seven league boots is generating too much distraction, and it makes me wonder why he would want to distract from his own comedy with such obvious physical ploys. I remember his Catholic rant and thinking "this guy has lost it". Religion is hilarious precisely because it's so stupid... stopping comedy dead in it's tracks to deliver an anti-atheist sermon is a bad move. If I never see Cook perform again it wouldn't break my heart. He's not a bad actor but really, if he weren't famous I doubt women would find him appealing. He's actually kind of horse-faced. Anyway, Louis CK is a genius. I just hope he doesn't get so depressed he commits suicide. Now HIM I would miss if he stopped performing.

Totally agree except for one bit: "He's not a bad actor..." As far as I know every single movie he's been in has been terrible. That may not be his fault but I can't really say this gives any evidence that he has any talent in that field. Mind you, that is not to say that he may not eventually be a good actor, just that right now it's too early to tell.

However, his stand-up on the other hand... yeah, that's a lost cause.

Not sure on his "Comedies"(Never saw them....), but I do know he was in Mr. Brooks which was Phenomenal. (He played one of the leads....it was a Psychological Thriller).

I used to think Dane Cook was sort of funny until he had the Madison Square Garden special. I think a large arena is a horribly impersonal venue for a comedian, and Dane spent half the show posing to wildly to the screams of rabid fans before he ever said anything funny. I think Louis is a genius, and one of the funniest comedians ever.
