SlutWalk San Francisco Is Coming This Weekend (PHOTOS)

During a safety forum at Osgood Hall Law School in Toronto in January, police constable Michael Sanguinetti told a room filled with women that to avoid being sexually assaulted, they should "avoid dressing like sluts," The Huffington Post reported in April.

Outraged ensued. Rotten tomatoes were thrown, tar was warmed and feathers were readied. No, not really. But according to SlutWalk organizers, they should have been.

Though Sanguinetti issued a written apology, a small group of Canadian women organized a march to bring awareness to social attitudes about sexual assault. They dressed in their finest lingerie, wrote "slut" on their foreheads, and took to the streets with signs of protest, hoping a few dozen supporters would show up. Instead, 3,000 people crowded the streets. SlutWalk was born.

And this Saturday, it's coming to Dolores Park.

SlutWalk San Francisco boasts a group of 18 organizers and contributors that has been hosting meet-and-greets, happy hours, and sign-making parties in anticipation of the event.

"We're so excited for Saturday," organizer Lauren Chief Elk told The Huffington Post. "We were so moved by the outrage of the women in Toronto. Especially since most of us have experienced sexual assault in one way or another. Rape happens all over the world, but here in the United States, we have a strong tendency to blame the victim."

Chief Elk experienced this first hand in 2007 when she and two of her soccer teammates witnessed the famous De Anza rape incident at a baseball team party. Allegedly, Chief Elk and her friends were attending a party when they found a vomiting, 17-year-old semiconscious girl being gang raped by a group of cheering baseball players. They immediately intervened and took the girl to the hospital. Four years later, a civil court dropped charges against all of the suspects.

Chief Elk was left heartbroken not only by the acquittal, but by the way the case was handled. "The defense lawyers called the girl a slew of derogatory terms and it was allowed. They called her a slut -- they even asked what she was wearing," she remembered. "This was an unconscious 17-year-old girl," she added. "But we live in a rape-positive culture."

Chief Elk explained that questions about what a victim was wearing during an attack only enforce attitudes that rape is acceptable. "We come up with all sorts of excuses," she said. "It's incredible that these attitudes are still encouraged."

When Chief Elk heard the story of SlutWalk, she immediately joined the team. "For us, it's about awareness," she said. "We hope to reach everyone, from law-enforcers to law-makers to victims who are too scared to come forward." SlutWalk participants aim to wipe out the argument that anyone deserves to be raped — regardless of actions or appearance. "People always ask me, 'does you have to use the word slut?'" said Chief Elk. "And I answer them, 'yes, absolutely.'"

To join in on the cause, head to Dolores Park this Saturday at 2 p.m. and march in the first SlutWalk San Francisco.

Make prostitution legal and it will cut way down on rape and social disease. Why do we still hang on to these puritanical christian hang-ups about sex?
10:36 PM on 08/07/2011
Except that rape is often less about sex than power. Power to force someone to submit.

Do the Nevada counties with legal prostitution have lower incidents of rape? Do other countries with legal prostitution have lower incidents of rape?

Men think about sex every 30 seconds. It is wired into us, no matter what your Feminist College Professor tells you in woman Studies.

hypersexual dressing is provocative. ask the designers at victoria's secret or international male. the problem is that sometimes we can provoke attention we don't desire. this does not alleviate the responsibility for self-control from the attacker, but it's wise to - err - have environment-appropriate attire.

i have the right to tape dollar bills all over myself and walk through the ghetto at night. that doesnt give someone the right to rob me, but some might be unsympathetic to my status as victim in that circumstance.

Oh poor you that has so miniscule an ability at self-control.
And all those other poor guys that just can't control themselves for a split second.
Comments like yours seriously make me wonder if women shouldn't have to wear burqas to protect themselves from the uncontrollable beasts that your men apparently are.
Actually your attitude is more than a little disgusting.
Environment-appropriate attire means no parkas in the Caribbean.
I certainly wasn't wearing anything inappropriate when I was assaulted and raped.
Boo on your attitude.

Good thing they kept *some* clothes on; I can't help but think that if they'd been naked, and there'd been any police in the area, it would've been ask - er, I mean, they would've been asking themselves if their family, friends and coworkers would think they were -

Oh, never mind... They're standing by other women instead of merely standing thoughtlessly by their men, as so many do. Angels, I call them, though perhaps not Guardian... ;)

So Polly Klass who was taken out of her bedroom, Jacey Dugard who was stungunned and forced into a car and me who was assaulted by an intruder into my hotel room are irresponsible?

What does your statement even mean?

rape is not because a person finds you sexy or even pretty. it's an act of anger and aggression. no matter if the person is walking down the street naked or in a bikini, that never gives anyone permission to rape them. the problem isn't with the way women or girls dress, but with the permission to do this that is given to men, or at least letting the aggressors pass the blame. what do you say about the little old ladies or children who are raped, or the young men, or even the young woman running in a jogging suit?
02:02 PM on 08/09/2011
If that is truly the case then why do you wear clothes at all when you walk around late at night.

Idealism vs pragmatism
We teach our young men that agression and persistence pay rewards, and one of the rewards is to get sex. Then they get drunk and use their tools to get their rewards.
Women should be outraged that they are blamed, but it should start with pro football, hockey, boxing, and beer ads. Nascar, monster trucks, the list goes on.and on.

Not at all.
Women are not responsible for rape
pro football is not responsible for rape
hockey is not responsible for rape
boxing is not responsible for rape
beer ads are not responsible for rape
nascar is not responsible for rape
monster trucks are not responsible for rape
RAPISTS are responsible for rape.

while I agree about the personal responsibility, the mixed messages are outrageous. If something this horrible happens to someone in your life you can't change it, only try to change the factors that allowed it to happen. It is not a bunch of evil-doers, it is a bunch of misguided/not guided, physically powerful people left alone with alcohol and access to innocents.

Ok - so the DA didn't press charges... in a place that's fairly actively pro-women's rights

AND

the civil trial - lower standard of proof of damages required - the jury in Santa Clara (a known bastion of pro-woman fairly liberal county) - ruled in FAVOR of the baseball players.

SO

while gang sex with a drunk girl is pretty low on the evolutionary scale ...it seems just about everyone agreed there was no rape ...

AND, to my daughters I would say, "Never go to a baseball team party, never get drunk with a bunch of guys (or preferably at all), certainly never go by yourself without a few other girls you trust, don't wear any clothes which might give the guys a wrong idea."

Lost in this is the origin of the SlutWalk. It was a comment by one Toronto police officer. It's not the policy of the Toronto PD, not any law enforcement agency anywhere that any woman deserves to be raped.

The disciplining of that one officer should have ended it.

If the disciplining of one cop could end rape then you might have a point, but have you taken a look at worldwide stats for rape?

unfortunately there are constant reminders of the beliefs that the toronto police officer expressed. Did you not hear about the florida judge who blamed the 11 yr old girl who was raped by a much older teen as asking for it because of the way she dressed? Many rapist get off because the girl has had sex before (but having sex with someone doesn't give everyone else a free go at it without her permission), if she was drinking alcohol ( getting someone drunk just makes it easier to rape them because they aren't able to fight them off), she knew the person and went on a date with him or her (buying dinner and a movie is not the fee for sex without permission.)
12:49 AM on 08/04/2011
There are no policies that say you are entitle to have sex with someone you buy dinner for, nor if you've had sex with someone else, or even that person at a prior time.

Rape is defined all over as non-consensual sex.
