ST. LOUIS -- Budweiser is getting a new look as its parent company tries to revive weak sales in the U.S.

Anheuser Busch unveiled a bolder, sleeker design for its cans Wednesday that puts a heavy emphasis on the "bowtie" design it has made a focus in recent marketing.

It's the 12th redesign since Anheuser-Busch began offering Budweiser in cans in 1936.

The new cans will appear in the U.S. in coming weeks and in other countries later this year as the brewer tries to build the iconic U.S. brand's sales in emerging markets.

Budweiser is one of the world's best-selling beers and a top brand for parent company Anheuser-Busch InBev SA. But, like many competitors, its sales have suffered in the U.S. as consumers have faced high unemployment. Recent employment trends are particularly hard on its core customers – young men.

The company said last quarter that it had sold 2.3 percent less Budweiser worldwide primarily because of a drop in the U.S. Its volume rose in some international markets. Anheuser-Busch joins many U.S. consumer product makers in looking for growth among the burgeoning middle class in emerging markets.

The brewer introduced Budweiser to Russia in 2010, is expanding its business in China and plans to take the brand in Brazil in 2012.

"The new design is the latest in one of many steps to reinforce Budweiser as a truly global brand," said Rob McCarthy, vice president of Budweiser.

Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer, reports its quarterly results next week.

Its top competitor in the U.S., Molson Coors Brewing Co. reported Tuesday that its second-quarter profit fell because price increases it made this year weren't enough to offset cost increases and a drop in sales and volume.

Brewers are struggling with higher costs for ingredients, packaging and fuel. Anheuser-Busch InBev also has raised prices to offset those increases.

Gotta love liberals. If you do not like someone, thing, place, anything they are all over you being a HATE MONGER, FOX NEWS WATCHING MEANY HEAD. Yet in these posts i've read, they all make fun of people that drink a beer. The left will be the downfall of this country. Just look at London.

If only Bud worked as hard on their beer as they do their packaging they might have a beer worth drinking.

You know what would be a great redesign that would pump up the sales? Add flavor!

Budweiser is but a mere step above Natty Ice. I try not to go below a Sam Adams

Its funny but I never liked beer. Take a look at all the heavy beer people, and you will see a lot of horrible and out-of-shape human beings misbehaving at sporting events!

There is a lot of strong opinion here from people who apparently do not drink Bud. What up0 with that ? Second - there is a trend in current graphic design to trivialize iconic symbols in the name of modernization. Frequently the original becomes so distorted in the effort that the connection is lost on prior visitors, buyers, users. There is a segment that buys all sorts of foods and beveridges based on "some thing new". Probably over 10,000 new food / beveridge products are introduced each year, all but a few fail. I like Bud - I do not see it as a premium beer and it should not be priced so high. Beer prices in general have escalated 100% in the past 10 years. Not just at Bud but across the board. The beer market needs to observe and learn something the wine guys have just discovered - the aspirational angle of higher price and slick ads has been supplanted by by excellent products with bargain pricing. I have shaken my head in disappointment many more times over a $100 red wine than I ever will over a $4 , and red, Malbeck. One is riding the coat tail of exclusivity and the other is producing a traditional and absolutely excellent taste (read the Malbeck story - for the history). The quality is in the ingredient - not the label. Concentratre on lowering transportation costs - think freight rail - and control of the cost of your ingredients. Grow

Oddly enough, the last time I was in Dublin a lot of the kids were drinking Budweiser. Apparently Guinness is "Your dad's beer" in Ireland.

How about re-designing what's inside? The best part of this crappy beer is, well, the cute little crown on the pull tab. And that's not saying much.
