When I sit down to work, I keep a small bowl of garlic croutons on my desk. These are little rewards for good ideas and strong lines, Pavlovian pellets to keep my spirits up.

Best to make it simple and lo-cal (coffee, hot and then, over time, room temperature). In my experience I don't pay much attention to what I eat as I write . . . and so a nearby plate of cookies or bag of chocolates can just disappear. Either is a great reward for completing a day's word count.

I adore capotes menu and compartmentalization of foods and when he ate them. When I write in the summer , I like egg salad and peaches or a caprese salad

Whitman's oysters and meat for breakfast sure sounds better than Count Chocula. Capote's daily libations explain a lot about why his output decreased over the years. Pho is great, and Emily Dickinson's homemade bread was probably delicious. Fitzgerald liked canned meat, but he came from Minnesota--just like SPAM!

When I'm writing comments onHP I'm usually eating a gigantic salad and organic hash browns.

I read once that Tolstoy liked to raid the pantry in his Moscow house at night, a pickle now, a spoon of preserves then, and then he cursed himself for his sensuality afterwards.

Why he cursed himself? He was a very sensual man, but I think he fell for the body/spirit dichotomy and felt dirty about himself.
