Shark Versus Everything (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/04/11 05:57 PM ET   Updated: 10/04/11 06:12 AM ET

Shark Week is underway, and with it comes the mass-broadcasting of gory, terrifying videos of sharks attacking ... well, pretty much everything.

Sharks are not always a threat, and filmmaker Jeff Kurr recently told The Huffington Post, "We find that in a lot of cases, great white sharks are very shy and reluctant creatures." Then again, he did go on to say, "They are out there, they do have the potential for mayhem, and that intrigues people."

Beyond the intrigue, Shark Week has another mission -- to save the sharks. Shark Week's Discovery Channel website features organizations focused on protecting the declining population. The featured organization Oceana writes:

These top predators are in grave trouble due to heavy fishing pressure, shark finning and bycatch.

Of the 307 shark species assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 50 are listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered, but only the white, whale and basking sharks are protected internationally under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

If you just can't get enough, we've put together a slideshow of some crazy videos of sharks versus ... well, pretty much everything. Enjoy!

Shark vs. Octopus

You would think the outcome of a fight between an octopus and a shark would be pretty easy to predict, but this National Geographic video might surprise you.

The Orca rules the seas. They also like to come up to your boat to say "hi, what's up", then are like "later, I got some big game to catch".

Yep, killer whales are awesome. There's a video of one from a pod off the coast of California, where great whites become air borne attacking seals pups. This shark was in the process of grabbing a seal when the whale came out of nowhere. Killer whales of course also eat seals, but apparently that huge shark was too big a temptation. Supposedly they consider shark liver a delicacy. It hit that enormous shark and took it apart in 30 seconds. That whale had to be the seal's best friend that day.

I never felt sorry for a shark before but that first one was awful, that goof with his Barney Google voice and then the poor shark is fighting for its life. Poof, it didn't even take long. I feel traumatized.

That impressive mouthful of teeth could not distract me from the upper lip that seemed to have been botoxed like Meg Ryan.

Did you know that the Cheetah and the Cougar have a common ancestor, Smilodon, the saber toothed cat. Conversely, while Cheetah's verge on extinction in the wild, the cougar is the most successful big cat in the world. It ranges over both North and South America. In fact, it has begun returning to habitats that it abandoned hundreds of years ago. A cougar shot in Chicago's loop several years ago?. A cougar hit by a car in Greenwich, Connecticut last spring? Both happened and both were 140 lb males. Why hasn't the cougar appeared in Asia or Africa? Give it time. If it ever finds a way past the Bering Strait, who knows what might happen.

Imagine the commotion in London, Paris or Rome if they found 140 lb cats in their cities?

Incredible video. Definitely surprising to see the shark get completely overwhelmed by the octopus.

I bet they don't. Strange they eat only the liver, maybe it's the most nutritious? I did know that dolphins and porpoises will attack sharks, but not to eat them. I've seen a pod do it once, that shark swam away like a bat out of hell.
