WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. -- Police say a tour bus mainly carrying Polish tourists was going too fast during a downpour when it crashed and flipped over on an upstate New York highway, leaving 30 people with minor injuries.

State police Capt. Eric Janis says Thursday that 19 people were treated at three Binghamton-area hospitals after the Wednesday night accident. He says police are trying to confirm that all the injured had been released. They included a woman who was trapped underneath the bus and was dug out by emergency crews.

State Police Sgt. Todd Burdick told the Press and Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton ( ) that heavy rain and speed too fast for the conditions caused the accident. http://bit.ly/o8zxpG

The crash was on a rural stretch of Interstate 81 near Whitney Point, about 15 miles north of Binghamton. Burdick says the bus was traveling from Niagara Falls to Trenton, N.J.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

A tour bus mainly carrying Polish tourists was going too fast during a downpour when it crashed and flipped over on an upstate New York highway, leaving 30 people with minor injuries, authorities said.

State police Sgt. William Ramsing said 14 people were treated and released at a hospital after the Wednesday night accident. They included a woman who was trapped beneath the bus. Emergency crews dug the woman out from underneath the bus and she apparently didn't suffer any serious injuries, troopers said.

"They had to actually dig the dirt underneath the bus to free the lady," state police Sgt. Todd Burdick told WBNG-TV in Binghamton.

He told the Press and Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton that heavy rain and speed too fast for conditions caused the accident, which occurred around 7:10 p.m. Wednesday on a rural stretch of Interstate 81 near Whitney Point, about 15 miles north of Binghamton.

The bus was traveling from Niagara Falls to Trenton, N.J., when it left the highway's southbound lanes and traveled down an 80-foot grassy embankment before overturning and landing on its roof in a gully, Burdick said.

Burdick told the newspaper that it was raining heavily at the time and there was a half-inch of standing water on the road.

Authorities said in addition to the driver and a tour guide, the bus was carrying 28 passengers, most of them tourists from Poland. Ambulances transported some of the injured to Binghamton-area hospitals, while the others were taken to a local fire house.

Police said the bus was licensed to Princeton Holdings Inc. of Morrisville, Pa., which also owns the company that operated the tour, Trenton-based Amerpol Tours.

M.J. Stawowezyk, the tour company's general manager, said the group arrived in Niagara Falls Tuesday afternoon and spent the night in a hotel on the American side of the falls.

Stawowezyk told The Associated Press Thursday morning that the group spent Wednesday visiting tourist attractions on both sides of the falls before boarding the bus for the return trip to Trenton. He said all the passengers have been brought back to New Jersey via transportation provided by the tour company.

Stawowezyk said his company specializes in U.S. sight-seeing trips for Polish tourists. He said he believed most of those on the bus were Polish nationals, although he didn't know exactly how many.

The southbound lanes of I-81 were remained closed until around midnight.

did they think it was part of the tour..?

Have never come across one of these buses doing less than 75 MPH on the NYS Thruway. Why the hell the government doesn't come down on these clowns is beyond me. I will never take a tour bus because I've seen how poorly they drive.

I wonder if they are going to be paying their individual hospital bills? Someone should do a follow up story on it. It would be no shock at all to hear of individuals with bills in the thousands, especially if they broke something. Welcome to wonderful America where an accident could potentially not just empty your bank account but drive you into debilitating debt in the blink of an eye! AWESOME Right!?

I think that all buses should be made to stop at all weight station scales just as tractor trailers are being made to do. Weight limits, log books, driver fatigue. Seems the stories keep coming and coming... And not to mention speeding to get their passengers to where ever they are going in record breaking time. If rules apply to one, should apply to all commerical vehicles

That's just going to create more headaches with our overstressed transportation system. Besides, the weight of 30 tourists cannot be considered a factor in this incident. And even if their luggage was heavier than the 30,000 pound bus, it is placed low on the bus to prevent exactly what happened from happening at lower speeds. Speed and weather were the only two antagonists here, my friend, not the overall weight of the bus.

I am a retired tractor-trailer and tour bus driver. I can tell you that all commercial motor vehicels are very heavily regulated. The problem is you can't catch everyone all the time. The ones that are caught just go back in business under a different name, or with a family member as a front. Most of these tour bus companies are small outfits owned by forigeners that cater to their own. They hire inexperianced drivers, giving them on the job training at little or next to nothing pay, then teach them the loopholes. These drivers for the most part are forigeners that have a hard time getting another job so they take what they can to survive. When I started driving in 1981 it was a little harder. You had to have commerial schooling and did alot of local work for a year maybe two. You had to earn the trust, but now with the competition being what it is the rules are relaxed. Beware Becarefull!!!

There have been far too many bus accidents recently in New York State. Most are tours going to Niagara Falls.....having lived in the area for most of my life and having seen Niagara Falls, it's not worth the risk of losing your life to see it.
