Cookie-Baking Robot: MIT's CSAIL Design Team Develops Robotic Pastry Chef (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/04/11 04:13 PM ET Updated: 10/04/11 06:12 AM ET

MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), a longtime robotics pioneer, just released a video of a new robot that can bake cookies from scratch. "Bakebot" was developed by MIT grad student Mario Bollini using the versatile robotics platform PR2. You may, hearing this, doubt that baking cookies is such a hard task... aren't there factories that automate almost the entire process? Yes -- but Bakebot is no factory. Instead, it uses visual recognition software and internal scales to find and measure ingredients in a room. Bakebot even uses a spatula to scrape the last bits of dough from its mixing bowl into the cookie pan.

Bakebot is no Rosey The Robot -- but it still makes for some great video.

I programmed a robot robot to sort balls from smallest to largest and to shake hands. That was in my 8th grade Technical Laboratory class... This robot is the work of an MIT Kindergartener, lmfao.

This kinda thing is why unemployment is so high and there is an obesity epidemic...selfish companies would rather have a robot do a human's job because its cheaper but guess what eventually when more people don't have jobs and money companies won't be able to sell their products. I'm really starting to doubt capitalism maybe Marx was right when he said it would eventually collapse in on itself but i bet he didn't see robots being the catalyst...

Just for the record we are well on the way to sleepwalking ourselves into a situation where the populace will accept a large number of autonomous robots in their/our lives without really being sure of the consequences.

Fair warning.........

Will it clean without retracing it's steps 16 times and bumping into everything?
