'Today' - Teen Boy Saved After Being Buried In Sand For 30 Minutes
1 of 7
A dramatic beach rescue was caught on tape when tunneling teen, Matt Mina, was buried alive when his sand cave collapsed around him. 'Today' anchor Ann Curry takes a look at the frantic digging effort that saved Nina's life. "The 17-year-old had been digging giant tunnels in the sand with friends at Newport Beach on Wednesday afternoon when the sand suddenly collapsed," Curry reports. Footage shows dozens of beachgoers and rescue workers digging furiously at the sand.

"I think everybody was really concerned for him and everyone was expecting to pull up a dead body, for sure, especially after 15-20 passed and they're still digging," says one bystander. When Matt emerged, unconscious but alive, the crowd erupted in cheers. Doctors say he'll be fine. "I didn't know if anybody could hear me while I was screaming for help, but I guess my cousin did, thankfully," Matt explains.

Granted, he wasn't too bright in building giant tunnels on a beach. BUT isn't anybody happy he's still alive? What if it was your friend or relative this happened to? Would you still be so callous?

it was a stupid idea to do that in the first place idiot some people never learn

His parents must be proud.

The idiot was actually creating a hazard for anyone who would have walked over the tunnels or maybe small children who might find them later. It's a good thing that one collapsed on him when other people were there to get him out immediately. And, the rescue crew could collapse the rest to make sure no one else got trapped in any!!

I am disappointed by all the mean and callous comments. Yes, he is 17; yes, it was a pretty dumb thing to do...but I doubt there a many of us who have not done a few stupid things in our lives. Give the kid a break. I'd like to see you say these things directly to his friends or family.

Now to all you anonymous snit-faced commentators, hiding behind your little keyboards, making your brave snide remarks...it is Aug 4, first week of the month...isn't it time to clean up and change your underwear?

The lessons to be learned here are, 1-Only foolish people build on the sand. 2-Never build without proper permits. and 3-only union workers should be hired....LOL. Seriously though, glad he is ok and alive to tell the story.

Is this a new trend for teens, when they got to the beach. Digging a tunnel in the sand, WOW, he's very fortunate that a lot of people was there to help. I see some kids still need their parents to chaperone them on the beach, still. Now you knucklehead, please don't do that again.

If you've ever seen any pictures of a mine or excavation (such as "Indiana Jones"), you'd know that you need to erect support beams to reinforce the ceiling. Secondly, wet sand alone is not suited for construction, since when it dries its subject to erosion. What were you thinking?!! Next time think something like this through.
