U.S. Hikers In Iran Freed Soon: Iranian Ambassador

Us Hikers In Iran

BAGHDAD — Iran's ambassador to Iraq said Thursday he expects two Americans who have been charged with espionage and held in Tehran for more than two years will be released "very soon."

Hassan Dannaie Fir said he doesn't have any specific details about when Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal would be freed from Evin Prison in northern Tehran. But he described a general sympathy for the two men, both 29, especially during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month that began Monday.

"We hope and expect that very soon they will be released," Fir said during an hour-long interview with The Associated Press at the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad.

In Tehran, "the general atmosphere is that they will be released," Fir said.

Pardons are traditionally handed down during Ramadan.

Bauer, Fattal and a third American, Sarah Shourd, were arrested in July 2009 after straying off an unmarked road in Iraq's northern Kurdish region.

Shourd was released last September on $500,000 bail but still faced the espionage charge.

The three denied the espionage charges and maintain they were hiking in Iraq and mistakenly crossed into Iran when they stepped off a dirt road while hiking near a waterfall. While other parts of Iraq remain troubled by violence, the semiautonomous Kurdish north has drawn tourists in recent years, including foreigners.

The case has added to tensions between the United States and Iran that were already high over other issues, including Tehran's disputed nuclear program.

The U.S. government has appealed for the two Americans to be released, insisting they have done nothing wrong.

The two countries have no direct diplomatic relations, so Washington has been relying on an interests section at the Swiss Embassy in Tehran to follow the case.

In Baghdad, the Iranian diplomat disputed the Americans were hiking at the time of their arrest although he stopped short of accusing them of nefarious motives in crossing the border.

"When they entered Iranian territory from Iraq, they didn't come from the mountainous part. They entered from the plains territory," Fir said.

"They were not hiking. Where they were arrested, there is no waterfall and no mountain," Fir said.

Last Sunday, the Iranian lawyer representing Bauer and Fattal said he expects the court to announce its verdict in their case this week.

The lawyer, Masoud Shafiei, said he hoped that even if the Americans were found guilty, they would only be sentenced to time already served.

Shafiei insisted the authorities have no evidence to prove espionage, noting that the area where the Americans were detained has a porous and unmarked border.

The three Americans are friends from their student days at the University of California-Berkeley.

Shourd, now 32, and Bauer got engaged in prison before she was released on what Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said were humanitarian grounds following health issues.

Shourd is back living in Oakland, California; Bauer grew up in Onamia, Minnesota; and Fattal is from suburban Philadelphia.

I'm surprised by some of the comments left here esp. by Yank and Dark. If you have ever been to the region in Iraqi Kurdistan where these hikers crossed the Iraq-Iran border, you would understand how easy it is to accidentally cross this border where there are no signs, no guards, and where one becomes captivated by the beauty of natural landscape. I have personally traveled to this area in Iraqi Kurdistan near the town of Ahmad Awa and I have seen the location where the hikers were reportedly arrested. Anyone could easily cross that border as they did. It's unfortunate that we should even have this debate when the release of these hikers who have committed no real crime and whose bogus cases are being tossed around by a judiciary facade in Iran is what we should truly be focusing on.

The two "hikers" *cough* intelligence agents will be free as soon as we release some Iranian "hikers".

Believe it when you see it. If their faith cut off hands for committing lying, denial and deception, none of the leaders over there would have one to greet you with a hand shake.

Let's face it: these guys were almost surely American and/or Israeli spies, since no one goes hiking for fun along the Iraqi-Iranian border, right?

So let us thank Iran for its generosity for their treatment of these "hikers". Now imagine the reaction of Israel if some Syrian "hikers" just happened to cross into Israel or -- and I know this is unimaginable -- some human rights activists even tried to bring food and medicine to the people of Gaza. But just imagine anyway ...

And certainly you have proof that they were "American and/or Israeli spies"...?

btw, I can easily imagine what would happen if "human rights activists even tried to bring food and medicine to the people of Gaza"
They would be refused entry and those that continued would be detained and quickly deported.

We saw how the Israelis deported the Turkish flotilla and how they also killed a good number of them while they were at it!

In comparison, Iran has reacted with moderation -- at least, in this case.
09:12 AM on 08/06/2011
I agree they are probably spies, but Israeli. What are you talking about? Does everything get blamed on Israel. They are likely American spies. If they were Israeli there is no way Iran would be releasing them.

They could just as easily be American and Israeli spies because they are both American and Jewish.
After all, if they are not just innocent little hikers, they are up to some very nasty business: the only question comes down the government for which they are working!

With Iran you can not second guess what the Mullahs are thinking since it is at their whim that justice is served or not. It would be nice if they were freed but personally I doubt it. They didn't get the extortion money from the parents that they got for the girl and that alone may make them cranky.
11:05 PM on 08/04/2011
State of Oman put up the bail money that she skipped on ... and illegal entry under suspicious circumstances in your beloved Israel would probably get you killed.
09:28 AM on 08/05/2011
Again why doesn't the moderator publish my response that I made 3 times? After having been attacked so many times by the Arabs in wars and so many times by individual Arabs with guns or suicide vests can you blame the Israelis for not allowing anyone near the border? How quickly you forget the countless attempts to kill Jews that is still going on today. If the Palestinians were friendly it would be another story, but in 63 years the Israelis have learned they are not.

To Hell with the Iranian diplomat and to Hell with Iran.

This is great news. I have often thought of these two young men and prayed for their release.
However ,this should send a message to anyone who wishes to go to a foriegn land and interfere with our fighting military. Just to protest against a war that they think is unjustified. Let the military do the fighting . And if protesters want to protest ,let them go to Washington ,NOT IRAQ !!

Can't Jimmy Carter go over there and persuade the Iranians to keep them.

Idiots are not a critical commodity in the US.

They should have to stay in jail, not for violating the Iranian border but for being stupid enough to go close to some line in the sand. I am surprise Jesse Jackson or Jimmy Carter wasn't on a plane to Tehran to demand their release before this. Oh that's right Jimmy couldn't get our embassy people out back in the 70's could he?

You are so right !!!

You might do a little research as to WHY Carter failed in negotiations... and the deal that Reagan made with Iran to release them after he was elected.
07:21 PM on 08/09/2011
The fact remains he failed.
05:14 PM on 08/04/2011
How many times, been said will be freed?????Total JOKE!!!
07:21 PM on 08/04/2011
Never unless you count Sarah Shourd and she was freed on bail. They probably forgive her failure to appear and return the Omani bail money.
11:02 PM on 08/07/2011
At no time has Iran ever said or even indicated that they were going to be released.  I will be most grateful if and when they do.
05:14 PM on 08/04/2011
Let me think now, isn't there a place that you put people whose decissions are a threat to themselves or others?
I am sure there is.Whats it called again???

This does wonders for the tourist trade in Iran. Seriously there have been tourists that have disappeared and never found again. Why a person would want to go to present day Iran for a visit is beyond me. Why visit any country ruled by Islamic clerics who have complete control of the country and use the Republican Guard fanatics as their enforcers? Iran would probably be a nice place to visit if the Mullahs were overthrown, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

If a Palestinian crosses into Israel illegally, he'd be shot.
08:04 PM on 08/04/2011
He would be if he were armed. Duh. And if an Israeli crossed into Gaza he would be shot and was. Several months ago some Israelis went to the tomb of Joseph to pray. The Palestinian police told them to leave but the Israelis insisted. Well guess what, the police killed them. So much for the peaceful Palestinians.
11:03 PM on 08/07/2011
And what does that have to do with THIS situation?  Can you not discourse on ANYTHING without bringing Israel into it?  Why so much compassion for Palestinians and none for your hamvatans?

The "kids" were stupid. Why were they there in the first place. When you play with fire you get burned...even for 2 years. Think of the money and time their careless actions have caused. BOO HOO for them!
