Rick Perry's College Transcript: A Lot Of Cs And Ds

Rick Perry

WASHINGTON -- As governor of Texas, Rick Perry has pursued a controversial agenda that would gut Texas' vaunted public university system in favor of something that more closely resembles a business.

As the Washington Post reported on Thursday, professors have been ranked according to how profitable they were to the university. Previous reports suggested Perry wanted to treat students as "customers" and tie teacher bonuses to anonymous student evaluations.

One reason that might explain his hostility toward the system: He didn't do very well in it. A source in Texas passed The Huffington Post Perry's transcripts from his years at Texas A&M University. The future politician did not distinguish himself much in the classroom. While he later became a student leader, he had to get out of academic probation to do so. He rarely earned anything above a C in his courses -- earning a C in U.S. History, a D in Shakespeare, and a D in the principles of economics. Perry got a C in gym.

Perry also did poorly on classes within his animal science major. In fall semester 1970, he received a D in veterinary anatomy, a F in a second course on organic chemistry and a C in animal breeding. He did get an A in world military systems and “Improv. of Learning” -- his only two As while at A&M.

"A&M wasn't exactly Harvard on the Brazos River," recalled a Perry classmate in an interview with The Huffington Post. "This was not the brightest guy around. We always kind of laughed. He was always kind of a joke."

A spokesperson for the governor recently told the Texas Tribune that the university "helped shape who he is today." The governor’s office did not return a request for comment from The Huffington Post.

First, I note that the release of confidential records, which college transcripts certainly are, without the permission of the individual is a violation of Federal Law. This includes releasing grades and transcripts to the parents of the student. Second, college grades are a notoriously poor indicator of stucent success, except in college. Many students who were elected to Phi Beta Kappa, never lived up to  Read More...

This guy is far from religious.
He does want to use the religious vote though, simply to accomplish his plan.

Grades on college transcripts, some of us do not consider of that much importance as it often reflects little more than what are the individuals interests at that particular point in his/her life. What some of us consider more important is as to whether that individual has grown intellectually since his "school" days, and in what direction. All too many do not. They obtain a college degree and, because someone told them that they are educated, believe that they really are, already believe they know everything and stop learning. After all, if one believes that one already knows everything, why bother learning anything else? It is the same as driving. Having reached, or believe that one has reached his/her destination, who is it that would keep on driving? What is truly unfortunate is that, in the matter of education, most only (and at best) simply "back out of the driveway".

And, what does that say about those who "vote" them into office? Does it not say even less? Mr. Perry, Ms. Bachmann and most of the Republican field represent very little but intellectual mediocrity, and probably much lower on the intellectual scale. Some of us would go so far as to consider them intellectually bankrupt and here, some of us are not speaking of whatever skills they may have acquired, but rather their obvious lack of understanding and comprehension of the country they would seek to lead or where they would seek to lead it.

What's with all this Perry bashing? Where is all the dirt digging about Romney? because there sure is a lot to be dug. Wasn't he pro-choice at one point? What about Romneybama care? I suppose the powers that be are expecting Perry to win this primary and don't want to waste their time targetting Romney...

Hey Jason,..... Rick Perry aside, ......where are Obama's college transcripts?????? Pretty hypocritical of you to criticize anyone else for something Obama won't release. Why don't you research what happened to the half billion that Obama gave to Solyndra?
02:30 AM on 10/03/2011
I have a feeling Obama will allow his transcripts from college to be released before the next election. I don't understand why this is an issue for him, unless he is ashamed of some of his grades. Doesn't make sense.

he seems perfect for the GOP

While some of us would not use the word "dumb" ourselves, we do admit that Obama is a very smart individual and "smart" in the sense that he understands things. As to once again trying one "not so smart" is that not what the Ameican people people did when the elected the preceding President to office not once, but twice. No thinking person would want to repeat that mistake, even as a joke.

WHERE IS OBMA'S TRANSCRIPT?

Anyone questioning Obama's intelligence can look right here.....

Gosh...Perry isnt even qualified to care for animals and he wants to care for the top nation on earth???

But he got a A in Military hahahahaha
03:22 PM on 09/15/2011
What about Obama's transcripts!!!!
03:31 PM on 09/15/2011
Did you not read the article. Law Review at HLS is the top honor at HLS. To even be qualified you have to make and hold atleast a 3.4 GPA (and thats low). He graduated Magna Cum Laude from HLS, thus meaning he got ATLEAST above a 3.6...If you are honestly trying to say that because there is no transcript for Obama, yet he served in one of the TOP position in all of Law Academia, you cannot believe he is smart or atleast competent enough to lead the US (whether you agree with policies or not), then I dont know what to say to you.

Who cares? Ted Kennedy was a poor student - became a great legislator. Grades are an indication of a good student, not whether someone will be a good president. I don't like Perry, but there are better things to judge him by than 30+ year old college performance.

Ted Kennedy may have been a poor student but he was a smart senator not a president. Perry even looks lost and can't find the elevator. But again so do most of the republicans candidates running for president.

They definitely like to do one thing though, they love to re write history for their own benefits. I have never heard so many untruths being told and then back track when the pressures is on. I guess that they learn from all the years of talking under their breathe that a miniorty will never be president and then they had a wake up call when it happen.

Everything about the president is out there for anyone to take the time out to see but then those who have very narrow minds will never believe anything unless it is something bad.
