S&P Downgrade: Ex-Obama Adviser Christina Romer Says U.S. 'Pretty Darn F**ked'

Christina Romer Downgrade

First Posted: 08/06/11 02:12 PM ET Updated: 10/06/11 06:12 AM ET

On the same night that Standard and Poor's downgraded the United States' top-level credit rating for the first time in history, Christina Romer, former chair of Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, didn't mince words when asked of downgrade's potential consequences. (h/t NewsBusters)

The U.S. is "pretty darn f**ked," Romer said during a segment on Real Time with Bill Maher called “How F**ked Are We?”, after Maher asked what the new could mean for the U.S. economy.

"I’ve been hanging around [Treasury Secretary] Tim Geithner too long," Romer said, explaining her foul language. Geithner, she says, swears "like a seventh grade boy."

S&P and Moody's, another prominent credit rating agency, had threatened to downgrade the U.S. credit rating for months over two primary concerns. First, that the country would potentially default on its debt because of an inability to reach a deal to raise the debt ceiling by August 2. And second, that the federal government would not impose an adequate long-term plan to address deficit reduction in the coming years.

The debt ceiling deal signed into law by Obama on Tuesday called for $2.4 trillion in cuts, after S&P denied rumors that it planned to automatically downgrade the government's credit unless long-term deficit reduction plans reached $4 trillion.

If she pulled the curtain back like that, and given who she was, and who she is now, well, We pretty darned [what she said].

That, my dears, is exactly what I said at the very moment I watched the second airliner plunge into the WTC live on NBC's Today Show. After that I said, "we're [what she said]!!! What the [what she said]? I'm [what she said]!!!! The whole world is [what she said]!!" And like  Read More...

Warren Buffet critizes S & P and then they threaten to lower his companies, Berkshire Hathaway, credit rating since he holds the largest private holding of U.S. Treasury notes. And this not political? They certainly did a grand job on their ratings of worthless mortage based stocks for their Wall Street cronies in their Bently and Ferraries.

Romer is like the arsonist who returns to the scene to admire the fire.
She is part of the problem.......she is a willing accomplice in the raping
of the United States and its people.

Tell that to the Congress -
01:35 PM on 08/09/2011
And what is he supposed to do about it? Anything would cost money and in case you haven't figured it out congress doesn't do anything these days except make headlines for foolish behavior. It's like being made captain of the Titanic after it hit the republican iceberg. He can rearrange the deck chairs for you if that will make you happy as the ship sinks.

Politics aside, my only question is, why did she say "darn"? Did she feel "damn" would've been too crass? I mean, really, if you're gonna drop the F bomb anyway, why not let "damn" fly, too? Am I right?

It's a bit like wrapping a sledgehammer in bubble wrap...

Whenever I think of Timmy Geithner I think of Timmy from South Park. There's a certain similarity.

Fiddling while Rome burns.
Let them eat cake

Maybe a new saying will arise out from the behavior of some US officials of late. Jokes when folks are dying and suffering out there. Really?

The ruling class seems very disconnected to the struggles of everyday folks. This tells me that things will have to get very dire before they get the message. The calamity will have to touch the rich and political class before they wake up. And thats not going to be a pretty sight.

The riches have so much money they can afford to buy stocks on the cheap without losing any sleep. In a few weeks, they will come out with some good news and drive the price up a little and cash out. We the little people with our 401K will take one step forward after sliding 10 feet.

My guess is we'll resort to pitchforks and torches before the rich start to feel the pinch of this depression.
