Dionne Bromfield, Amy Winehouse's Goddaughter, Performs At Big Chill Music Festival

Dionne Bromfield Big Chill

EASTNOR CASTLE DEER PARK, England — Amy Winehouse's 15-year-old goddaughter performed an outstanding set at the Big Chill music festival, mirroring her late mentor by closing her show with a cover of Winehouse's "Love Is a Losing Game."

Dionne Bromfield got teary-eyed when she performed the song, barely able to sing its last few words, though the crowd cheered her on.

"She was an amazing singer," Bromfield said. "She was not only my godmother, but she was my mentor and my boss as well."

The big-voiced singer sang with ease during her 30-minute performance on Saturday, the second day of the U.K. music festival.

Bromfield was a reminder of Winehouse: She stood close to the mic while belting lyrics, with her big hair and tiny build.

She was backed by a 5-piece band and dancers, performing songs from her two albums and singing mainly about boys and relationship troubles.

Her scratchy voice was top-notch as she sang soul songs with pop flavors, especially on the old-school sounding "Remember Our Love" and the up-tempo "Yeah Right." She also performed covers of Cee Lo Green's smash "Forget You" "and the Shirelles' "Mama Said," Bromfield's first single.

Winehouse, who had struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, was found dead of unknown causes at her London home on July 23.

Bromfield is signed to Winehouse's label, Lioness Records.

At first it was her father jumping on the band waggon, now her goddaughgter. Is that family suffering from some sort of missionary compulsion?

she was already signed to her label, not after the fact

Its funny how everyone appreciates someone's musical legacy wneh their dead, because when she was alive no one wanted to listen to a druggie sing.

So you missed her meteoric rise to fame? From her critically acclaimed debut album Frank (2003) to an unprecedented 5 Grammys for her second album Back to Black (2006)... and numerous other prestigious awards... all BEFORE her life began to unravel in the full glare of the tabloids. Yes, people were listening to her very appreciatively indeed. It's a pity she apparently came to your attention only because of the lurid headlines, and not for her music. Where were you?

you are right on point. see the video 'stronger than me' on jools holland. she's about 19 but you can see all the talent!

That chick sure could party....If you have never done "crack" or "heroin" or both combined.....you have no possible clue as to the amounts she purchased the night before she overdosed. We are talking a massive amount of SUPER potent drugs. The crack alone would kill 90% of anyone who tried to smoke most of it....and combined with heroin???? Her body just laid down and said.."No F'n way man...."

No, she wasn't good... she was EFFING GREAT! Go to youtube and put in Valerie Amy Winehouse, and you will hear just a tiny bit of her greatness... she was AWESOME and one of the BEST. Maybe you are just an old misogynist who has your brain and ears closed... too bad, you LOSE.

I'm astounded at the mud-slinging en masse. Ms. Winehouse was a talent whose music will live on far longer than any of these comments. She had a DISEASE. Would the mud-slinging be as harsh or even present had she died of cancer or heart disease? People, educate yourselves. Addiction takes our most gifted and intelligent without reason, and so randomly. Then we are forced to endure the ignorant, uninformed, slurs and arrows of those that have no clue of the daily struggles this young woman and so many others weather; the insidious features of the disease that took her power and decision-making abilities away while leaving her talent intact. To watch the misinformation and ignorance perpetuated at her expense is just criminal, stupefying and nauseating. And the worst seem to come from those in some sort of leadership role and those hiding behind pseudo-super hero monickers and other facades. Take off the tights and titles and get educated. Someone YOU love may depend on that someday soon.

Your analogy is flawed on many levels. Nobody wakes up one morning and desires breast cancer yet people with addictions crave the very thing which ultimately may kill them.
There IS a difference.
10:30 AM on 08/07/2011
Nobody wakes up one morning and desires heart disease, either, yet they, too, crave the very things which lead to it.

Whatever differences there may be are too poorly understood here for you to think otherwise.

I appreciate your comment, Seafarer61, whoever you are. Flawed as you think my analogy may be, no one wakes up wanting to be an addict or to die of addiction either. I think your comment underlines my message concerning the lack of knowledge about the disease of addiction; craving itself, is a major misunderstood component of the disease. There are, in fact, many differences between cancer, heart disease, and addiction... I invite you to read up on those differences. I still hear the judgment in your thoughts... all I ask is that people take the judgment out of what they have no real facts about. When you have read "Loosening The Grip," from cover to cover, or have received your degree in the studies of addictions... I would sincerely love to hear your comments. Just trying to pass on the message of compassion and truth about this widespread and misunderstood affliction.

Ms. Bromfield's mother is a good friend of Amy's father. Amy probably knew Dionne since she was born. Hopefully Donne will learn from her mentor in Amy the right things, able to use her talent to her own success and avoid the mistakes as to men, alcohol and drugs that may have destroyed Amy.

Oh, my, aren't we all being a bit judgmental today. Amy Winehouse was an incredibly talented young girl who had her own choices and issues to deal with. She was also a daughter, and being a father, I know that we all wish the best for our children. For her parents to have to see the incredible level of venom thrown at their child, probably because those quick to the draw with the holier than thou comments just happen to be eating themselves alive at how successful she was, while they so much knew better for her. She also listened to the spewing of hate-filled comments while still a child trying to balance her own life. I feel bad for her. I love her music, and I wish she would have lived and that we could all have enjoyed her talent, rather than enjoying the making of smug comments. The girl in the article, Dionne, seemed to be very grateful for whom her Godmother was. Can't we leave it at that.

incredibly talented? are you kidding? You should get out more.

I liked her too. But incredibly talented? I don't think so.
01:12 AM on 08/07/2011
Recognizing great talent is not an "acquired taste," or comparison type thing... one does not have to leave the house or get out more, to know an outstanding, one of a kind, talent. You're picker seems to be on the fritz. Pehaps, you should get out more and listen to what people in the industry and world are saying.

Yes she was incredibly talented, just because you didn't like her style of music, well that's your opinion and your entitled to it.

I assume Amy was a stronger person when this young woman was born. I cannot imagine anyone asking Amy Winehouse to be a role model for their child.

This is a very narrow-minded, even naive view of people and their foibles. Almost evangelical in it's mindless condemnation of humanity. Are you one? I hope you can gain some understanding of others as you mature.

Give me a break. How high minded of you to lecture me! I have had friends, and yes a few family members, to suffer from drug and alcohol addiction. They've gone to jail, lost children and jobs. I've gone to more funerals than I care to acknowledge. So don't tell me I'm naive until you bury the number of people I've buried. I understand that Ms. Winehouse's addiction was a disease and I stand by what I said early, I cannot imagine anyone asking someone who is an addict to mentor their child and I can only assume that she hasn't always been an addict that she was a stronger person years ago. How on earth is that condemnation. Maybe that's why the poor woman couldn't overcome her illness, people get all worked up when someone makes an innocent comment. I stand by what I said. I cannot imagine anyone asking an addict to mentor their child. That's what a god parent is to me. I don't know what on earth being evangelical or not has to do with it.
