SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Convicted polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs ruled with a heavy and abusive hand, several former followers testified Saturday, recounting how the man they once revered as a prophet banned parades, Sports Illustrated magazine and even the color red upon rising to power.

The second day of Jeffs' sentencing hearing later ended with a woman, now 28, tearfully alleging that Jeffs also sexually abused her as a young girl. Charges were never filed in that alleged incident. Three jurors cried during the woman's testimony, and state District Judge Barbara Walthers adjourned court until Monday.

The same jury convicted Jeffs on Thursday on charges of sexually assaulting two underage girls he had taken as brides in Texas. He faces up to life in prison, and jurors are likely to decide his punishment early next week.

For the second straight day, Jeffs wasn't in court. He walked out in protest Friday and has continued boycotting the proceedings, choosing instead to remain in another room of the courthouse.

Jeffs, 55, is the ecclesiastical head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which believes polygamy brings exaltation in heaven. More than 10,000 followers consider him God's spokesman on Earth.

One of them was Ezra Draper, who testified that FLDS men began taking brides younger and younger after Jeffs took over the polygamous group in 2002.

"You could see which girls were with which fellas. It would repeat itself week after week," said Draper, who left the church in 2003. "Then they were with child."

Prosecutors have tried showing in the sentencing phase that Jeffs ruled the FLDS with a far heavier and crueler hand than his father, who Jeffs succeeded. Draper testified that while Rulon Jeffs allowed fun activities such as parades and dances, his son abruptly put a stop to it in the community.

Draper said Jeffs threw out copies of Sports Illustrated and Car and Driver found in the boys' bedrooms. Books that featured talking animals were banned because Jeffs considered it teaching lies. Even the color red became prohibited, Draper said.

Jeffs also kept meticulous records – as jurors found out during the conviction phase of the trial. One of the most uncomfortable pieces of evidence so far has been an audiotape of what prosecutors said was Jeffs sexually assaulting one of his victims when she was 12.

On Saturday, prosecutors again dipped into a trove of Jeffs' records seized from a 2008 police raid on a remote FLDS ranch in West Texas. This time it was lengthy instructions on building a bed in the all-white, top-floor room in the ranch's temple. The instructions allegedly written by Jeffs were exact: 5-inch thick table legs, and padded sides on the bed while "the Lord does his work with me."

Jurors were shown the typed notes shortly after a nephew of Jeffs testified that his uncle sodomized him when he was 5 years old. Brent Jeffs, now 28, said Warren Jeffs told him during the alleged assault that "this is God's work." Jeffs was never charged with sexually assaulting his nephew.

The Associated Press typically does not name alleged sexual assault victims, but Brent Jeffs went public with his allegations including filing a civil lawsuit against his uncle in 2003. Brent Jeffs said the suit was settled in a deal that included him getting some land.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Jeffs fathered a child with one victim when she was 15.

Jeffs represented himself during the trial, routinely interrupting the proceedings and choosing to stand silently in front of jurors for nearly a half-hour during his closing arguments. His absence from the sentencing phase since Friday made for a more typical trial atmosphere.

Walther ordered Jeffs' stand-by counsel to represent him. But having been sidelined by Jeffs for the last two weeks, attorney Deric Walpole struggled Saturday to keep up with witnesses and evidence, some of which he was seeing for the first time.

At one point Saturday, Walpole jumped from his chair to object while Draper testified. He asked Walther to have the jury leave the courtroom.

"I have no idea what that man is getting ready to say," Walpole said. His objection was overturned.

Jeffs burned through a slate of seven high-powered attorneys, including Walpole, in the six months before he decided to represent himself. Prosecutors have accused Jeffs of trying to stall the case against him.

Walpole declined to say whether he'll call witnesses during the sentencing phase. He has indicated that his plea for leniency will focus on Jeffs being a product of his environment and a culture that hasn't changed for centuries.

He should have become a Catholic Priest. They would have protected him and he could have raped twice as many with no fear of punishment.
10:29 PM on 08/09/2011
That makes no sense. Warren Jeffs likely had no knowledge of Catholic theology or doctrine. Catholic priests cannot marry, and "marriage" is very important to FLDS'ers. Jeffs, being the "prophet" , thought he was protected from punishment and that what he was doing was not rape. As it happened, Warren Jeffs was given free rein over his underage harem and avoided prosecution for many years until the law caught up with him.

I am a member of the LDS church and I can not be more clear that we do not pratice polygamy. We are simple everyday people providing good christian homes and values for our children. Remember when you spout off about any religon that you have all the facts. I have been in the church for over 7 years and have found love, fellowship, and very close relationship to my heavenly father. No matter the religon there are always people who commit crimes. It is unfortunate that the actions of a few thrown in with a healthy dose of ignorance and a mass of media propaganda can take away from an institution. The LDS church is a young church and has the highest growth amoung other churches it is worldwide and has given much to the communities that surround them. If you wish to know what we believe then please go to mormon.org. The internet is nothing but the bathroom wall of a truck stop. Get the facts and religion is personal not public. Choose for yourself what feels right to you. If you seek knowledge ask it from GOD.

The internet is "nothing but the bathroom wall of a truck stop" if it happens to disagree with you, eh? For every recent fervent Mormon convert such as yourself there are a hundred ex-Mormons with the equal power of the Internet behind them.

Perry knew this was going on in San Angelo and did nothing about it. Stories were out when they moved to Texas and covered this so called prophet and there ways. This pedophile is not a prophet and will be a bottom feeder in prison and he will get what he deserves.

Here is what I don't understand about the F.L.D.S. What happened to the women's maternal instinct? After having my children my protective instincts knew no bounds.

Also, I read that most of the plural wives are enrolled in the food stamp program and receive benefits on their children because they are not legally married and the fathers are not listed on the birth certificates. So the government that this sect disdains feeds these despicable men.

This particular group has been in existence for a looooooooong time. Most who are in it, were born in it and so were their parents, grandparents etc. so what they are living in is their normal. They believe, against all contrary info in the original text, that Jeffs is a prophet. See, the original text states that if but one thing a prophet says does not, did not, come to pass, then nothing a prophet says comes from God. Using that they would have kicked him to the curb, and his daddy before him, a long time ago.

I read an article back around the time of Jeffs' arrest that said something to the effect that Jeffs feels that Jesus will be wearing red when he returns, and that it is therefore blasphemous for anyone else to wear red in the meantime.

Opinions vary.

People should be able to practice whatever religion and lifestyle they want as long as it is not deleterious to those inside or outside of their group, sect, or cult. However, this Jeffs fellow is a monster as I suspect others in his cult are also. They are abusing / terrorizing members of their cult and for that they should be convicted and sent to prison ... for a long time. This country is full of sects and cults that go about their business in peace and their members are happy. Be respectful and leave them alone. But when you come across a group like Jeffs, I am glad to see the government crack down and put an end to their crimes.

For anyone who wants more information on the LDS and the FLDS, and their founder Joesph Smith, their Doctrine and Coveants, and of course The Book of Mormon, go to utlm.org this is a huge source of information you will not get from the churches.

And here's the main LDS church site:

http://lds.org/?lang=eng

I'm not Mormon, nor even religious. I'm just big on balanced information presentation, and that site you linked to seems anti-Mormon from a Christian-specific perspective.

I figure: why not let people have easy access to both sources, and see for themselves what they think?

I agree.

Funny thing is some of the contradictions to their background and history I learned many years ago came from their own literature and books.

Its funny how Mormons are always so quick to say "I am not mormon but heres the church web site" Balance is a great thing! I have no skin in the game, I just happen to know a lot about cults. The web site came about because of a women who saw something really wrong in the whole Joesp Smith story and the way LDS change the history to remain relevent and mainstream.
