London Riot: Chaos In North London After Police Shooting Death

London Riots

RAPHAEL G. SATTER   08/ 7/11 12:29 AM ET   AP

LONDON — The gritty north London neighborhood of Tottenham exploded in anger Saturday night after a young man was shot to death by police.

Two patrol cars, a building and a double-decker bus were torched as rioters clashed with officers in front of the Tottenham Police Station, where people had gathered to demand "justice" for the death of a 29-year-old killed in an apparent gunfight.

"It's really bad," said local resident David Akinsanya, 46. "There are two police cars on fire. I'm feeling unsafe."

Sirens could be heard across the city as authorities rushed reinforcements to the scene. In Tottenham shop windows were smashed as residents looted the stores, pushing shopping carts full of stolen goods down the street.

Officers in riot gear and on horseback pushed up against the demonstrators. Akinsanya put the number of demonstrators at between 400 and 500. Police said there were about 300 people gathered.

Miles from the tourist hotspots of central London, Tottenham is one of the most deprived areas in all of England, with nearly half of all children living in poverty, according to campaigners.

In 1985, Tottenham was the scene of a deadly riot after a local woman suffered heart failure when her home was raided by the police. The Tottenham riots were among the most violent in the country's history, with one officer stabbed to death as he tried to protect firefighters and nearly 60 others were hospitalized.

I could never understand the "someone from our neighborhood was killed by the police so to protest we're going to destroy our own neighborhood" mentallity. Looting, stealing from your neighbors, destroying the property of your neighbors.....that's not protest, that's self destruction.

Capitalism's failure to satisfy the basics for all. Time to move to a better system, one created to give people a chance at a better future and replace greed as the sustaining engine. Those that say there is nothing better need to be taught the first priniples of life.

"shop windows were smashed as residents looted the stores, pushing shopping carts full of stolen goods down the street" Are you perhaps referring to the greed of people using this death as an excuse to steal things that don't belong to them?

Why can black people make racial remarks and get away with it?

A racial remark is still racial. It doesn't need context to be understood as being racist

goodmarina - I see racial comments all the time under these stories. If they attack a white person they are ignored. If there is the slightest question in a comment concerning a person of color...the comment is zapped.

When we observe the systemic institutional racism within the UK and bias against their indigenous black population that is rampant, resulting in these riots, we can observe the blatant hypocrisy the English engage in when they allege the Israelis are oppressing the Palestinians. What a farce.

Is London really a safe place to have the Olympics in 2012? Imagine these riots then the whole thing could get very ugly. Not surprizing if some rabble rousers try to do just that to draw world attention to themselves during the Olympics by setting fire to half of London.

oh give me a break ...  just about every country has some sense of unrest because of the lack of balance in those who have opportunity and those who are oppressed for one reason or another (deliberately or consequentially)

suppose we better cancel the 2016 Olympics in Brazil ... after all, do you know just how bad the situation is where income disparity and race relations go?

Is anywhere a safe place to have the Olympics? Every location of major events will have safety issues and "rabble rousers".

@Climp Jones - do you need for one of us to post link after link of stories where an unarmed black person has been shot?

or ... should we go back a hundred years where it was perfectly excusable to kill a black person for simply being born black?
06:27 PM on 08/07/2011
It barely even an "unarmed black kid" it usally a black kid with a rap sheet that stretches a mile long who assaulted the police officer or refused to follow instructions placing the officer's life at risk and in that situation which is what "happens all the time" good ridence im sick of people who hate police because they dont want to follow the law.

It's very difficult to find an accurate account of what happened to cause this because of all the sensationalism talking about the rioting itself. The fact is, it all started when Duggan fired at a police officer, and the officer fired back in self defense. The guy was a complete thug and he almost shot a police officer since he thought he was being followed.

All of this sensationalism needs to stop. The rioters are acting like animals and endangering innocent people. The rioting is not a call for justice, it is an excuse for violent, angry people to lash out.

You're going to make me go elsewhere to find what a certain 'Mark Duggan' is" who, what when where why, ...I have never been to Tottingham, nor London, nor Europe. A map might help too.
