Mitt Romney: Obama Is 'Out Of His Depth,' The Nation's Security Is At Risk

Romney

First Posted: 08/08/11 11:45 AM ET Updated: 10/08/11 06:12 AM ET

CONCORD, N.H. -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney blamed President Barack Obama Monday morning for Standard & Poor's decision to downgrade U.S. debt, saying the nation risks losing its sovereignty if it does not take "corrective action."

"The failure of the president to reignite this economy and get people back to work is one of the reasons we're seeing such high levels of deficit and why the debt continues to grow at such an alarming rate," Romney said.

"We need to put more Americans back to work and I'm afraid the president is just out of his depth when it comes to understanding how the private economy works."

S&P's decision Friday night to downgrade U.S. debt from AAA to AA+ was, according to Romney, due largely to promises the federal government has made to entitlement programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

"A nation just can't pay this much back," Romney said.

The former Massachusetts governor took the unusual step of addressing reporters before the first of three campaign events in the Granite State, injecting his voice into the news cycle on the first morning of trading after the downgrade.

Talking a few minutes later with local business and civic leaders, Romney grew animated when arguing that Obama's policies have "so frightened the private sector" that employers are avoiding the risk of expansion.

"Sorry to get upset like that," Romney said, but his voice continued to rise. "Only if America's economy continues to lead the world can we be sure of our freedom long term."

"There are bad people in the world that would like to subject other people to their control. We have to have a strong and capable economy to protect ourselves," he said. "We've got to get serious about this and take corrective action."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened the day Monday down 200 points, around 11,250, and had dropped another 150 points by mid-morning. European and Asian markets were also down significantly.

Romney's comments punctuated his appearance in the state that votes first in the Republican primary process, soon after Iowa Republicans will hold their caucus. Romney is not seeking to win Iowa but he will be expected to emerge victorious here next winter.

Yet he has been off to a slow start in terms of retail campaigning. Since announcing his exploratory committee on April 11, Monday marked only his tenth day of campaign events in the state, according to a spokesperson. That does not include the day he spent in Manchester for the June 14 debate.

Romney has come under some criticism for keeping such a low profile, and his representatives have promised that this week -- with another debate coming Thursday in Iowa and the Ames Straw Poll on Saturday -- will mark a new, high-intensity phase in his campaign.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MITT ROMNEY: Standard and Poor is owned by McGraw-Hill. Harold McGraw III, the current CEO, worked for G.H.W. Bush, Dole, G.W. Bush, Cheney, Giuliani and is currently working to support Romney 2012. SO THE PERSON WHO HAS DOWNGRADED THE NATION'S CREDIT NOW WORKS FOR MITT ROMNEY. Strange how Romney released a prepared statement only minutes following news of the downgrade.

The only "change" I think this country needs right now is term limits in the House and Senate. The reason why nothing gets done is because people like Pelosi, Boehner, Reid, McConnell, and all their grey haired buddies want lifetime jobs. Things never get done because there is always some "blue dog democrat" or "neo-conservative" whose already thinking about the next election cycle instead of the greater good for the country. THATS the problem.

Mitt Romney's credentials both as a private citizen and a governor is nothing to write home about. He's only trying to create waves for sympathetic votes that resulted from Obama shifting ground on the issue of taxes to the rich which the Tea Party spearheaded resulting ultimately to nation's economic status being downgraded. If he is wise enough, he needs to refrain from blaming Obama's Presidency for the present debacle facing the country as they (GOP) have more blame in this matter than the Democrats, refusing stubbornly to shift ground even if the country went to pieces.

Yup. Bush-created mess. Sorry. We have longer memories than you give us credit for. Bush. Obama got it dumped in his lap and everyone forgets the job doesn't come with a magic wand - it comes with an uncooperative Congress that pursues it's own personal (re-election oriented) agendas and creates every manufactured crisis it can gin up (debt ceiling, anyone?) to toss as obstacles in the path of progress. Sorry. Spin all you want. Not buying any spin muffins today.

The only way Mitt can win is if Sarah runs as a co-candidates so we would be near-assured that we could get a full 4 year term. They both are easily bored quitters; 'nuff said ?

A pity when you watch an otherwise competent person like Romney pander to the ignorant tea party constituency. In the Republican primary, it's a race to the bottom, literally. The person who gets most down and dirty in the mud wins.
09:23 AM on 08/11/2011
Mitt Romney has NEVER been competent at anything in his life. He made his money by demolishing the jobs of others working at the companies he owned. Massachusetts was 47th out of 50th in job creation when he was governor. The list goes on.

And when he starts out running for president by PANDERING to the worse elements of society, the Tea Party, he shows he has NO CHARACTER or INTEGRITY.

WHO NEEDS a president like Mitt Romeny? Certainly NOT AMERICA.

You can tell the left is extremely worried and threatened by Romney. Here is a guy that actually has successful executive, leadership, and governing experience, unlike our current Community Organizer in Chief. They have nothing else to run on (OK, the POTUS got Bin Laden, of course taking advantage of the policies Bush put in place, congratulations), so they will do their best to demonize and denigrate Romney. Let the name calling begin and see where it gets you this time.

HA HA HA HA You are obviously unfamiliar with Romney's past. As a private citizen he made his money but breaking up corporations and shipping jobs overseas. As governor he was the ultimate flip flopper. He raised taxes and fees and then cut funding to a number of essential programs (funding to aid police was a big one and led to an increase in crime rates). Although he ended his term with a slight surplus, had his fiscal policies continued, he would left MA with a $1B deficit. His civil rights record is utterly abismal and he frequently sought permissions from the MA Supreme Court to overstep his authority as governor (requests which were denied). In addition, he all but abandoned his governorship during the last year of his term in order to focus on his presidential campaign (he was out of state 212 days during his final year).

The only major success of his term as governor was the overhaul of MA healthcare law, something he now is utterly cagey about because its not politically expedient to tout its success. The man has absolutely no backbone and will blow with whatever wind is most politically expedient. He'd be an awful choice for President.

so now obama has to meet with s&p to make you happy, another excuse to belittle the president.

how about you would have taken the same stance with the United States as you did with your state of Mass? Instead you took the low road, the stone throwing, finger pointing, negative commenting way, no--no-no solution.

you sack of lies.

S&P's decision Friday night to downgrade U.S. debt from AAA to AA+ was, according to Romney, due largely to promises the federal government has made to entitlement programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Mitt's a complete tool. SS, Medicare, and Medicaid have almost nothing to do with it. According to S& P, a large part of the downgrade was because of the political atmosphere in DC, and the inability of the legislature, particularly the pubbies, to reach a compromise necessary to address our problems.

'"We need to put more Americans back to work and I'm afraid the president is just out of his depth when it comes to understanding how the private economy works."

But you understand, don't you, Mitt? You understand that if you by a company, strip its assets, fire many of its workers, and then dump the stock and get out after you've made a nice profit, you can claim to fellow vulture capitalists that you're a big success. Just don't be pretending that you know anything about job creation.

So solving the problem is the problem not the problem itself?
09:27 AM on 08/11/2011
Maybe MITT can't READ. We all KNOW what the S&P said as to their reasons for the downgrade, and they didn't say ANYTHING about it being done because of Medicare, Medicaid.

Sounds like MITT has a LOT in COMMON with SARAH PALIN -- he DOESN'T LIKE TO READ. He'd prefer just to TELL LIES to other people he knows don't read.

"Obama's policies have "so frightened the private sector" that employers are avoiding the risk of expansion."

this is all we hear from the right regarding jobs and obama yet they never say what policies they talk about, they sometimes throw in the cost of obamacare to the employers.

is this true? partially true? not true? what policies do they talk about. I doubt that's the problem with employers, the job creators are just loving their extra cash sitting in their bank accounts, squeeze their employees and refuse to hire more.

And lest you forgot the unemployment rate shot up under Bush and capped at 10% only a couple of months after Obama took office. He's since been able to lower it to 9% but any kind of economic growth has been hampered by Tea Party politics. Read up on economic policy and actually pay attention to what is going on rather than spout right wing talking points.
09:29 AM on 08/11/2011
Of COURSE it's NOT TRUE. Republicans in Congress AND Republican presidential candidates are ALL liars. They NEVER "say what policies they talk about" because they are lying, and because they NEVER HAVE ANY POLICIES themselves.

You can't FAIL TO NOTICE that the only campaign strategy for ALL OF THEM is to tell lies on the President -- NEVER, NEVER offer ANY SOLUTIONS themselves.

The market is circling the drain. The economy in general is falling apart. France about to be downgraded. Obama's approval currently 41% according to Gallop. London riots. Unemployment through the roof.

What's the top story on HP? A smear piece on GOP front runner.

So you PRETEND to quote the Gallop poll, and you JUST HAPPEN to forget to mention that Pres. Obama is BEATING the Republican presidential candidate by 47 - 39 -- in that LATEST GALLOP POLL, taken AUGUST 4?

Forgot to mention that, didn't ya? I know. It SLIPPED your mind. Same thing happened to the Right-Wing radio talk hosts I heard on yesterday -- they ALL forgot to MENTION THAT part of the Gallop poll. What a coincidence -- all of you having the same memory lapse on the same fact.
