Michele Bachmann's Views On Slavery Are Worse Than You Thought

The American Prospect:

Months ago, there was a small controversy over Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann signing a pledge put forth by social conservatives in Iowa that stated "black child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African American baby born after the election of the USA's first African American President."

However well intended, many people were understandably offended by the implication that black people were better off as property. But this isn't the first time Bachmann has put forth a perspective on slavery that is at odds with the historical record --

The quantification of the massive, damaging and racist rhetoric coming from the Right, inflamed by the advent of America's first half-Black POTUS, reveals two very important facts:

1. an inexcusable lack of education in America, and
2. the not-so-concealed racism that white America clings to as a core cultural value.

Add to the second of the above, the knowledge that whites will be a minority in this country in a generation, eliminating the so-called "manifest destiny" that characterizes the last Millennium, and the fear and loathing of "other" in white culture has ramped up to the point of dangerous violence.

Yes, within that generation sheer population dynamics will take care of the source of racial violence. However the question that should be asked is: As an enlightened culture supposedly based on the rule of law, equality and justice for all, how long will the people who are supposed to be in the business of protecting the weak from the deprivations of the strong turn a blind eye to the criminality of the soon-to-be minority whites?

Dear Michelle,

Here again, you assert a concept with no historical precept. Did you know that black slaves were denied the sanctimony of marriage? And, black families were regularly broken up and sold off individually? Your view of a nuclear black slave family is absurd. Its as unreal as the tooth fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus.

For all the slaves who were raped by their masters and gave birth to mixed babies she's probably right. Jefferson kept all his chilluns on the plantation I believe. Still need the data on the children born to slaves.
