This morning, the James Beard Foundation announced the winners of its first-ever Leadership Awards. The new award category recognizes people who have worked to create "a healthier, safer, and more sustainable food world" in several different fields. The list the Foundation has assembled is eclectic. A few winners are globally famous: Michelle Obama, Alice Waters, the urban farmer Will Allen. But there are also several less-well-known representatives of mainstream corporate culture and grassroots organizations.

The 10 Leadership Awards will be given out at a gala dinner. Tickets to the event cost $1000.
