Comedian Anthony Jeselnik Signs Development Deal With Comedy Central

If you're familiar with Anthony Jeselnik's sense of humor at all, you may think that fitting his dark sensibilities into television's constraints would be a bit of a square peg, round hole situation. But as far as Comedy Central is concerned, it's going to be an exciting challenge.

The all-comedy cable network announced via press release today that they have signed the 32-year-old comedian to a development deal that will see him star and executive produce his own project which will shoot in early 2012. No details on what exactly that project will be, but with Jeselnik at the helm, it's sure to have a twisted point-of-view.

"We are trying to reconcile how someone with such a dark world view can also be such a nice guy," said Kent Alterman, head of Comedy Central's original programming and development. "We figured the best way to find out would be to develop a show with him."

And the feeling is clearly mutual. "At this point in my career, I feel like this is the best thing that could happen for Comedy Central," said Jeselnik.

Jeselnik certainly isn't new to TV, having written for "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon", performed on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live", and starred in his own half-hour "Comedy Central Presents". He also was one of the chosen few who had the pleasure of roasting Donald Trump earlier this year.

We caught up with Jeselnik briefly while he was on the road today and asked him a couple of important questions.

HPC: Will your show be more like a narrative (sitcom) or like a talk show ("Daily Show", "Tosh.0").

AJ: It'll be more like the latter.

HPC: Do you think your roast of Donald Trump is directly responsible for your getting this deal, and if so, do you plan to ask him to be on your show?

AJ: The roast wasn't directly responsible, but it sure as hell didn't hurt. I've actually been talking to Trump about working for the show as a key grip. He wants to do it, but the union is being dicks.

HPC: Is Comedy Central ready for "Development Deal Anthony Jeselnik" and how does he differ from "Comedian Anthony Jeselnik"?

AJ: Comedy Central is definitely ready for me. Desperately so. Development deal Anthony Jeselnik and Comedian Anthony Jeselnik are pretty much the same person. Except Comedian Anthony Jeselnik tells jokes on stage and Development Deal Anthony Jeselnik wears an eye patch.

HPC: What sort of insane demands are you prepared to make now that you're going to be a television star?

AJ: All Comedy Central contracts feature a clause that says I can't go crazy until halfway through season three.

Noted. We await more news on this with baited breath. Until then, here's a clip of Jeselnik from "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon."
