Eduardo Marmolejo, 17-Year-Old Student, Charged With Murdering School Principal Suzette York

Teacher Stabbed

By ADRIAN SAINZ   08/11/11 05:45 PM ET   AP

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A 17-year-old student charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of a Christian school principal told investigators he had planned to stab the woman on the third day of classes, when he knew he'd be alone with her in a classroom, police said Thursday.

Eduardo Marmolejo was held without bond and ordered to undergo a mental evaluation by a Juvenile Court judge during a hearing Thursday. State law allows police to release the names of juveniles charged with first-degree murder.

Marmolejo has been charged with planning the killing of 49-year-old Suzette York for months. York's body was found by a teacher in a classroom on Wednesday at Memphis Junior Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist school of less than 100 students.

The thin teenager with short brown hair appeared before Judge Sheldon McCall, wearing a bright orange jail jumpsuit. Marmolejo was joined by his parents, who both wore black shirts and blue jeans.

Prosecutor Chris Lareau said the killing was premeditated and asked McCall to detain Marmolejo. Both Lareau and the two defense attorneys appointed by the court asked for mental evaluations of the teenager.

The judge appointed the two attorneys after Marmolejo's mother said the private lawyer she hired did not make it to the hearing. She said she could not remember the attorney's name.

During a break, Marmolejo asked for his glasses, which a court officer provided. Marmolejo's mother, whose name was not made available, asked for tissues.

The judge then returned to the courtroom and ordered the mental evaluation.

"Our main concern is to determine if he is a danger to himself and a danger to the community," McCall said.

After the hearing, the parents were shuttled away in a van and were not available for comment.

The killing shocked current and former students of the school, located next to a church and a cemetery in a residential section of east Memphis. They described York as a caring person who taught science and math before becoming principal in 2008.

York's body was found at about 11:20 a.m. Wednesday. Parents were called and students were sent home after the body was discovered.

Police said Marmolejo told investigators he planned to kill York because he did not like her and she had made him angry. Marmolejo told authorities he knew that he was going to be alone with York in a classroom, police said.

Marmolejo was one of the oldest students at the school, which has students in pre-kindergarten through high school.

York is survived by her husband, who lived with her in an apartment in suburban Memphis.

About 30 friends and current and former students attended a tear-filled prayer service for York on Wednesday at Mullins United Methodist Church, located next to the school.

Peter Hunter, a former student who also has a cousin currently attending the school, said York tried hard to nurture a family atmosphere at the school.

"She was a person who was very much involved with the students," said Hunter, 25. "She cared deeply about the development of her students."

I would like to thank those who responded to my post, some were very gracious others not so. I love being a teacher and I love my students even those who have bad days a go off on me. I would not have been in this field for 25+ years if I was doing it for the money, It is a thankless job, but the kids are important to me. I would have made far more money if I worked in the private sector (my degrees are in Business Technology and Computers) so I guess I will never be a millionaire. Thanks Again.

This is the first of me reading about a Latino killing a teacher but we don't know. Most news or articles are about Caucasian's shooting down a whole school or their parent's. Anyway, this article shouldn't be about labeling Latino's. Think about the principle and let her rest in peace.

Let this tragedy be a reminder that the school-house can be a very dangerous place and that our educators deserve respect and special consideration and not mindless condemnation for choosing their profession -- just like cops and firefighters.

Stop with the Latino labeling! If it is relevant to the story -- is it??? --- then be specific: Puerto RIcan, Cuban-American, Honduran, of Mexican descent. Or of you do not know, then Hispanic is preferable.

And why is his ethnicity in the headline and NOT in the story itself??

When you find out what his ethnic group is than use that INSTEAD OF LATINO which is lumping all groups into this fake ethnic group. UNTIL THEN USE AMERICAN in your headline link if you must identify him with a group because LATINO IS NOT AN ETHNIC GROUP and does not represent any nationality or heritage... or just leave out the darn LATINO LABELING.

a tragic and irrational act, regardless of the setting. (but I don't understand the relevance of the parents' sartorial choices)

As a precursor to all the bigots out there:

Murderers come from all the different ethnic groups and they happen in all different parts of the world. The American justice system is going to put him on trial and in all likelihood he'll receive at the minimum a life sentencing.

Don't blame this on foreigners, don't blame it on "MEXICANS!" because you can't hide the simple fact that no one has a monopoly on inhumane criminal actions. No one.

This is very sad but not surprising.

The dirty little secret many Christian schools are now trying to hide is that they have the same problems as public schools (low test scores, facebook bullying, physical violence) and they are handling them the same way public schools are and we all know how that is turning out.

Oh well... I guess the secrets out.

One last question, did this fine but misuderstood wonderful boy, experiencing "freedom" in America, receive his invitation to attend Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and the other Ivy League universities? This is just the kind of candidate those admission committees love to admit. They view a bold boy like this as a great potential leader of American people.I'm sure he'll eventually find his way into our elite medical or law schools.

You know I had a lot of responces to my post yesterday, most in favor of what I said, which is always nice. One however actually tried to say that this boys ethnicity and his parents citizenship were issues of concern. Let me ask something. When this country was created it was done so that people from 'all walks of life' could come here and enjoy a good and prosperous life. Thats why this country was called, 'the melting pot'. None of us are 'Americans'. We are all Irish, French, English, African, and hundreds of other ethnicities. We all came to this country for a better chance. So to say that maybe if this boy and his parents were 'aliens' the principal might still be alive because maybe he would have been caught and made to 'go home'. Umm, if that were true, the 1600s and 1700s, this country never would have been settled. All the crime thats ever been commited in this country was committed by 'illegal aliens', its only since the middle of the 1900s that the term meant anything other then people that were born here. Stop profiling, none of us are 'americans'. The word American shouldnt have a definition cus if it did, whoes to say YOU would be considered one. Judge not lest ye be judged. Im not saying he's innocent, I think he's guilty as sin but his 'breeding' has nothing to do with it.

I would only add that all immigrants did not come here for a better life. There are voluntary and involuntary immigrants. American slavery is an example of involuntary immigration.

Anyone else's jaw drop at the mother's claim she "didn't remember the name of the lawyer" she hired? Either she is truly a special kind of stupid or she's lying through her teeth.
