Pat Hanlon, Giants Vice President Of Communications, Uses Twitter To Defend Team From Fans

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/11/11 10:40 PM ET   Updated: 10/11/11 06:12 AM ET

The Internet, especially Twitter, allows everyday folks to speak truth to power. Or, it at least allows us to speak truth @Power. But, as in too many areas in world affairs, Power doesn't always answer back.

This was not the case, though, when some New York Giants fans began venting their frustration on their favorite team's lack of offseason player acquisitions. After news broke that wide receiver Steve Smith was leaving Big Blue for the rival Philadelphia Eagles a tidal wave of fan unrest flooded Twitter.

Giants Vice President of Communications Pat Hanlon was soaked by it, and he decided to do something about it.

Hanlon began a spirited and occasionally potty-mouthed defense of the Giant organization against its own fans.

When Brian Bardin, who goes by the handle @bbhkf78 on Twitter, suggested that the Giants were entering a necessary rebuilding phase, Hanlon retweeted the message with the added note "Re-build my ass! I got your re-build."

While the fact that Hanlon has not refuted the authorship of the tweets dismisses the theory that his account had been hacked, it begs two other questions.

Did a a team spokesman simply lose his cool because of his passion for his employer? Or, did a savvy public relations professional make certain that his team would be a topic of Internet conversation on the night the NFL preseason opened up?

Either way, check out some of the most entertaining and passionate tweets and vote on which ones you'd RT.

CAUTION: There is foul language in some of these tweets.

The condensed offseason has led to hysteria in many quarters - good and bad. I find the hysteria hysterical.

Well I'm a Giant fan and I have no problem with what this Giant employee did. I think that this will be a rebuilding year for the Giants but this employee did his job by trying to get Giants fans to believe in the team. It was a poor attempt though.

Hanlon has always been an illiterate idiot. The Giants should of fired him long ago. Now is definitely the time. I think the Bronx Zoo is looking for a cage cleaner.

The NFL is "BIG BUSINESS" and doesn't give a Damn about the fans. The ticket prices are ridiculous and the concession prices are ourageous. But they don't need us because TV pays them millions for every game they play.

The Internet allows every person with a computer to run off at the mouth, even when they lack the knowledge on the subject !! This Executive had enough of a "fan" doing just that. Yes the team needs its devoted fans to support them, but also room to manage and run the team.

I wonder if the "Rabid Fan's" would enjoy comments on their occupations by some-one lacking knowledge on that trade or occupation ????

Oh was this poor executive having a bad day?? Did he actually have to have contact with "fans"?
I hope that was to traumatic for him.I hope hes now safe in his cushy office.Maybe get him a massage and a latte and everything will be ok.

Its true, the Giants have done squat this off season while their biggest rival only 90 miles away is building a winning team. In fact Phillie has been the most active team by grabbing top free agents
from all over the league, the Phillies did the same in baseball. Maybe WS and SB for the city of brotherly love?

The economy today can't possibly keep supporting the over-paid sportsters, and their executives, but if the people believe that it's worth it, have a go at it, it's your pocketbook that suffers.

But why is Obama not going after them for excessive profits? They have tax writeoffs like every other business..plus they have a 9 billion dollar televsion budget.. Obama should take some of that money and give it to the people who do not work.. The same people who vote for him..

Lets face it NY Giants sat on their hands and didn't prepare during the offseason for what was to come . Conservative or not they blew it . They are to blame for the loss of their players . The Eagles and other NFL teams did and they will reap the rewards . Should be an interseting NFL season.

Does anyone watch football anymore? So yesterdays game.
12:44 PM on 08/12/2011
Everyone pretty much watches it as it is the most popular sports game in America. The one i can't figure out are the one who watch awful things like soccer, MMa, and hillbilly NASCAR.

Right.. It shows you the nations mentality.. sitting in a bar and watching cars circle around a track by boys who can hardly put two sentences together.

Actually college football is much more exciting.I could care less about the NFL.
Several college teams have stadiums that sell out 100,000+ seats every home game.
Not one NFL could do that, ask the Cowboys they cant!!

From a lifetime Giants fan - This Idiot needs to be fired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey, pro sports, players, owners they don,t care about you. they just want you to keep them in fancy cars, pen houses, with the over inflated ticket prices. that is why I'll never go to any game. they are all a bunch of leeches. fans should stop going to games. then you will see the price of tickets go down and the players and owners attitudes change for the good. are you with me or with out me.

a couple a weeks ago a famous NFL player passed away and to me it was also the passing of the true NFL. Watching games now aren't as fun as they used to be and never will. Last season was boring and so will this season. College is great to watch, but it ends too quickly, and is getting to the point where its not about the game either. Now I go exercise and have moved on, so should alot of others.
