Neapolitan Triple Double Oreos Brighten Up The Cookie Shelf, Thicken Up Waistlines

Neapolitan Oreo

First Posted: 08/12/11 04:42 PM ET Updated: 10/12/11 06:12 AM ET

The Oreo was the best-selling cookie of the twentieth century; Nabisco has sold about a half a trillion of them since their introduction in 1912. But that hasn't made Nabisco rest on its laurels. Case in point: the new Neapolitan Triple Double Oreo, the newest addition to the surprisingly large Oreo family.

The new cookies layer strawberry and chocolate cream between three Golden Oreo wafers, and have been hitting the shelves over the last two weeks. Grub Grade tasted the cookie and said: "a decent Neapolitan cookie albeit with a very weak chocolate taste, but if anything, the cookies do lend themselves to a gimmicky 10 minutes of entertainment." FoodBeast has nice pictures of the packaging. Each cookie has a whopping 110 calories -- more than double the calories in a normal Oreo.

The Neapolitan cookies have the same form as the slightly older Triple Double Oreos, which sandwich chocolate and vanilla creams in between three traditional chocolate cookies. The normal Triple Double Oreos now have national distribution, while Neapolitan Oreos are only limitedly available.

A funny story that actually surprised me: when they started selling Oreos in France my teenage son wanted to try them. He loved them and we bought them once in a while. On our following trip to the US he asked me to buy a box when we went to the supermarket. He ate one. He said that they were so disgustingly sweet he couldn't eat them. So, apparently the same company selling the same cookie in different countries adjusts the level of sugar content for the market. Apparently the American market got the overly sweet cookies. Ugh!

Just call 'em what they are: not food, but "fat inducing substances."

Where's their imagination? How many ways can they screw up an oreo all in the name of increasing profits?

I saw the package, read the ingredients and said a polite NO Thank you to myself. I'd think twice before serving those things to my enemy.

Isn't the so-called "cream" really just Crisco and sugar?

From the article: "But that hasn't stopped Nabisco from resting on its laurels."

Actually, that hasn't MADE Nabisco rest on its laurels. They are NOT resting on their laurels, as your sentence would imply.

That is a really confusing phrase. A laurel wreath was applied to the head of a victor in some ancient games. So to rest on your laurels you would have to stand on your head...not very restful I should think.

Much like resting on your achievements. Uncomfortable, I would think.

It seems like in a nation full of folks with fluoride and antidepressant numbed brains, people will eat any damn thing you put in front of them.

I haven't eaten OREOS since I was about 13 and I only liked the white creme filling... although I have to say, this double decker of a heart attack looks mighty alluring. If only the creme on the bottom was more vanilla.

Thank god I have incredible will power!

Uh... no.

The peanut butter ones are really good, though. Yum. :)

Those peanut butter ones are my downfall. They're so good they're evil. Save me from PB Oreos!

Oh no. I haven't tried these yet. I'm still trying to grasp multiple flavors of M&Ms. I love the pretzel ones. And Sam's has them in a convenient single-serving 3 lb. bag.

These cookies aren't going to make anyone fat, parents make kids fat and adults make themselves fat. My kids eat oreos once in a while and they are all very thin, guess why? Because they play outside. They are in sports, they swim and we all, as a family play games outside. We ride bikes, play tag, football, frisbee and everything else our parents raised us on. My kids play 30 minutes a day of electronics and 30 minutes of tv and have never complained about it. If they eat an oreo their next snack is an apple or something healthy, it is all about common sense and accountability, something we see less and less of these days. Just because these companies make all this crap doesn't mean we have to let our kids overindulge on it, be the parents, if they want more than they should have tell them no and stick by it, ridiculous blaming everyone else.
