President Obama's New York Approval Rating Plummets: Quinnipiac Poll

For the first time during his presidency, President Barack Obama has received a negative score from the voters of New York.

New York State voters disapprove 49 - 45 percent of the job President Obama is doing, a huge drop from his 57 - 38 percent approval June 29, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

The poll was conducted from August 3-8, directly after tense, drawn-out debt legislation negotiations came to a close.

"The debt ceiling hullaballoo devastated President Barack Obama's numbers even in true blue New York," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "He just misses that magic 50 percent mark against a no-name Republican challenger."

Voters split 48 - 46 percent on whether President Obama deserves reelection and say 49 - 34 percent they would vote for him over an unnamed Republican.

Obama's numbers nationwide have dipped as well, with the most recent weekly Gallup poll average finding him with a 42 percent approval rating,

Obama won New York's 31 electoral votes in the 2008 election with about 63 percent of the vote.

In his 2008 White House run, according to Center For Responsive Politics, $1 out of every $20 Obama raised came from New York state, where he took in $42 million, and New York City was his biggest cash center.

The President was in New York City yesterday, where he attended two fundraising events.

First was a reception with about 15 people at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Battery Park that was thrown by Gary Hirshberg, chief executive of organic yogurt maker Stonyfield Farm.

He then went to the West Village home of Harvey Weinstein, where the movie mogul and Vogue editor Anna Wintour hosted a slew of celebrities paying $35,800 a head.

The New York Post estimates that after everything was said and done, the President raised about $2 million for his 2012 re-election campaign Thursday night.

Reminder - it's August of 2011 - the election is not until November of 2012. Some perspective: This time in 2007 Hilary Clinton was going to be the Democratic Nominee against Gulliani. This time last year most thought Osama Bin Laden would never be caught or killed or thought he was already dead. A lot changes in a year. Here are some of my predictions: This time next year: Perry will become the Republican  Read More...

Too many on this site don't get it. New Yorkers are displeased because he doesn't put his foot far enough up the treasonous Republicans' butts!

One must remember all these polls are mainly done of "likely voters" and or those whom were able to be reached via listed phone numbers, emails and so forth.

A large population of New Yorkers as well as elsewhere do not vote, aren't even registered to do so and or otherwise cannot be bothered. Many are members of the minority communites (black, latinos, poor, etc) or otherwise disenfranchised that their views are often not counted.

In NYC/NYS on a wide variety of social issues the minority and others listed above tend to be more conservative than what one sees in the wealthy and or liberal parts such as Manhattan, Westchester and Long Island. Yet because they do not often vote in numbers and it is easy for poll results to state " a majority of New Yorkers favor....." (insert anything from gay marriage to election polling here), thus build momentum.

Finally as anyone who has studied marketing and or took statistics in college or at university knows much of the results from polling can be influenced by whom is asking the questions and how they are presented/worded. Indeed one of the first things my statistics professor told us was that numbers rarely meant anything as they can always be massaged or sexed up to get someone where they need to go.

Frequently cited by journalists, public officials and researchers, the independent Quinnipiac University Poll regularly surveys residents in Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and nationwide about political races, state and national elections, and issues of public concern, such as schools, taxes, transportation, municipal services and the environment.

Known for its exactness and thoroughness, the Quinnipiac poll is featured regularly in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and on national network news broadcasts. In 2010, respected public opinion polling analyst Nate Silver ranked the Quinnipiac University poll as most accurate among major polls conducting surveys in two states or more. The Quinnipiac poll was also selected a "winner" by the New York Post for the most accurate prediction on the Schumer-D'Amato Senate race in 1998.

When some polls said the GOP was tanking, the left was all over it. THIS poll says Obama is tanking and many on here are dismissing everything about it. Too dang funny

$35,000 a plate to raise money for a guy who has demonstrated ABSOLUTELY NO ABILITY WHATSOEVER to lead our nation in ANY PRODUCTIVE WAY. Absolutely unbelievable.

I am very disappointed, particularly the recent debt ceiling fiasco. The GOP and Wall St. sez NO, go jump and the POTUS sez OK how high?

Was my vote for him for naught? I would have liked him to show more chutzpah but he's always looking for compromise from a group that despises every breath he breaths and the rest of us are hung out to dry.

He did not cave to anyone and in order to make a fair assesment those accessing must be willing to do so fairly and truthfully weighing the actions, against what he was up against for the preservation of the interest of all American's. Like you folks, most have tunnel vision and only see the small scope of their individual situations and lives, rather than the big picture wihich is inclusive of everyone and all things that must be considered. I guess it is easier to point ones finger and place blame. I would not want his job it is an absolutely thankless job! The Republican's are a hot mess, with the in fighting and duplicity of the division of their party. The Tea Party, The Republican Radicals and then the Republicans that have good sense are just drowned out by the oyther two sections and fearful for stepping up to do the right thing affraid they will not be re-elected, what a mess.

"The Republican's are a hot mess, with the in fighting and duplicity of the division of their party..."

Tavis Smiley And Cornel West seem to what to challenge the Democratic leadership. I say "Good for Them." A political party that has infighting, is a political party that is vibrant, and not stayed and stale. This is America - party loyality is for the shallow political party hacks. I say SCREAM at both parties and wake them up.
02:38 PM on 08/14/2011
This is misleading. If I was asked if I approve of the President's performance I would say "no" too. BUT, that doesn't mean I'm not going to vote for him or even work for him to be re-elected. He's been crucified by Republicans with sole intent of hurting him. He could have fought harder, but he also had to get "something" done. Repubs don't care about the country or getting anything done. They would rather run the car off a cliff in a cynical effort to re-gain power. There is no reason whatsoever to go back to the lunatics who have acted so careless and selfish and got us into this crazy mess. That is just crazy logic. I watch the Republican candidates and it's like a surreal circus. Nixon would be an extreme liberal and Reagan a moderate next to these crazies! Obama 2012!
09:15 PM on 08/14/2011
That's BRILLIANT logic right there! "O" will have spent $5 TRILLION that we DO NOT HAVE, he has us in THREE WARS NOW, not 2, he's been AVOIDING our flag, and apologizing for America for 3 years now, and he worked to pass the 28,000 page obomanation-care bill instead of investing $1 into the Private sector for jobs. The country is in the WORST SHAPE of our LIFETIME, and you're voting for him again in 2012, and you already made that decision now. That's just BRILLIANT!!!!!

No this is not an option. If the sitting President was for soem reason deemed unable to continue on, then the Vice President would step in and be the candidate. President Obama is seemingly all things considered the best President for this particular time in history. 2012 is coming and then we will be on to a new conversation. A person can only spend two consecutive terms as President of the United States.

We don't need to. In these bad economic times, we could use a few good laughs. And the roster of potential Republican candidates fits the bill. Every time another presidential hopeful tosses in his/her hat, we catch ourselves laughing out loud and in public.

I am a New Yorker and Guilliani nor any other Republican will win NYC! New Yorkers always say what is on their minds, we may express dissapointment and anger, but that's us venting our emotion, getting our point accross, it is not our heart speaking! We will vote based on our heart and what we know to be the better of the two evils and that will not be a Republican candidate.

President Obama has not sugar coated anything, please listen when he speaks. He has been telling us all along the facts. What you are use to seeing from others and the multiple divisions within the current Republican Party that he is not doing is pointing the finger or screaming blame at a counter part. His focus is on trying to solve the many national and international issues that our Country is facing, in the midst of constantly having people throw rocks at him for doing what is right.
