Scholars Seeking To Correct 'Mistakes' In The Bible (VIDEO)

By MATTI FRIEDMAN   08/12/11 02:28 PM ET  AP

JERUSALEM -- A dull-looking chart projected on the wall of a university office in Jerusalem displayed a revelation that would startle many readers of the Old Testament: the sacred text that people revered in the past was not the same one we study today.

An ancient version of one book has an extra phrase. Another appears to have been revised to retroactively insert a prophecy after the events happened.

Scholars in this out-of-the-way corner of the Hebrew University campus have been quietly at work for 53 years on one of the most ambitious projects attempted in biblical studies – publishing the authoritative edition of the Old Testament, also known as the Hebrew Bible, and tracking every single evolution of the text over centuries and millennia.

And it has evolved, despite deeply held beliefs to the contrary.

For many Jews and Christians, religion dictates that the words of the Bible in the original Hebrew are divine, unaltered and unalterable. For Orthodox Jews, the accuracy is considered so inviolable that if a synagogue's Torah scroll is found to have a minute error in a single letter, the entire scroll is unusable.

But the ongoing work of the academic detectives of the Bible Project, as their undertaking is known, shows that this text at the root of Judaism, Christianity and Islam was somewhat fluid for long periods of its history, and that its transmission through the ages was messier and more human than most of us imagine.

The project's scholars have been at work on their critical edition of the Hebrew Bible, a version intended mainly for the use of other scholars, since 1958.

"What we're doing here must be of interest for anyone interested in the Bible," said Michael Segal, the scholar who heads the project.

The sheer volume of information makes the Bible Project's version "the most comprehensive critical edition of the Hebrew Bible in existence at the present time," said David Marcus, a Bible scholar at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, who is not involved with the project.

But Segal and his colleagues toil in relative anonymity. Their undertaking is nearly unknown outside a circle of Bible experts numbering several hundred people at most, and a visitor asking directions to the Bible Project's office on the university campus will find that many members of the university's own staff have never heard of it.

This is an endeavor so meticulous, its pace so disconnected from that of the world outside, that in more than five decades of work the scholars have published a grand total of three of the Hebrew Bible's 24 books. (Christians count the same books differently, for a total of 39.) A fourth is due out during the upcoming academic year.

If the pace is maintained, the final product will be complete a little over 200 years from now. This is both a point of pride and a matter of some mild self-deprecation around the office.

Bible Project scholars have spent years combing through manuscripts such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, Greek translations on papyrus from Egypt, a printed Bible from 1525 Venice, parchment books in handwritten Hebrew, the Samaritan Torah, and scrolls in Aramaic and Latin. The last member of the original team died last year at age 90.

The scholars note where the text we have now differs from older versions – differences that are evidence of the inevitable textual hiccups, scribal errors and other human fingerprints that became part of the Bible as it was passed on, orally and in writing.

A Microsoft Excel chart projected on one wall on a recent Sunday showed variations in a single phrase from the Book of Malachi, a prophet.

The verse in question, from the text we know today, makes reference to "those who swear falsely." The scholars have found that in quotes from rabbinic writings around the 5th century A.D., the phrase was longer: "those who swear falsely in my name."

In another example, this one from the Book of Deuteronomy, a passage referring to commandments given by God "to you" once read "to us," a significant change in meaning.

Other differences are more striking.

The Book of Jeremiah is now one-seventh longer than the one that appears in some of the 2,000-year-old manuscripts known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. Some verses, including ones containing a prophecy about the seizure and return of Temple implements by Babylonian soldiers, appear to have been added after the events happened.

The year the Bible Project began, 1958, was the year a priceless Hebrew Bible manuscript arrived in Jerusalem after it was smuggled out of Aleppo, Syria, by a Jewish cheese merchant who hid it in his washing machine. This was the 1,100-year-old Aleppo Codex, considered the oldest and most accurate version of the complete biblical text in Hebrew.

The Bible Project's version of the core text – the one to which the others are compared – is based on this manuscript. Other critical editions of the Bible, such as one currently being prepared in Stuttgart, Germany, are based on a slightly newer manuscript held in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Considering that the nature of their work would be considered controversial, if not offensive, by many religious people, it is perhaps surprising that most of the project's scholars are themselves Orthodox Jews.

"A believing Jew claims that the source of the Bible is prophecy," said the project's bearded academic secretary, Rafael Zer. "But as soon as the words are given to human beings – with God's agreement, and at his initiative – the holiness of the biblical text remains, even if mistakes are made when the text is passed on."

The article does not mention the specific university where the research is being done. I assume it could be due to security considerations. It also does not mention were the new translations that have been made are accessible.

Hey kodimirpal....Is wine consumption good or bad?
O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination,- of Satan's handwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper," (5:90).
(Here is) a Parable of the Garden which the righteous are promised: in it are rivers of water incorruptible; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine, a joy to those who drink; and rivers of honey pure and clear. In it there are for them all kinds of fruits; and Grace from their Lord. (Can those in such Bliss) be compared to such as shall dwell for ever in the Fire, and be given, to drink, boiling water, so that it cuts up their bowels (to pieces)?" (47:15).
Truly the Righteous will be in Bliss: On Thrones (of Dignity) will they command a sight (of all things): Thou wilt recognize in their faces the beaming brightness of Bliss. Their thirst will be slaked with Pure Wine sealed," (83:22-25).

Hey kodimirpal...Does Allah forgive or not forgive those who worship false gods?
Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything else, to whom He pleaseth; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin Most heinous indeed," (4:48).  Also 4:116
The people of the Book ask thee to cause a book to descend to them from heaven: Indeed they asked Moses for an even greater (miracle), for they said: "Show us Allah in public," but they were dazed for their presumption, with thunder and lightning. Yet they worshipped the calf even after clear signs had come to them; even so we forgave them; and gave Moses manifest proofs of authority," (4:153).

Hey kodimirpal....
Who was the first Muslim? Was it Muhammad?  Abraham?  Jacob? Moses?
"And I [Muhammad] am commanded to be the first of those who bow to Allah in Islam," (39:12).
"When Moses came to the place appointed by Us, and his Lord addressed him, He said: "O my Lord! show (Thyself) to me, that I may look upon thee." Allah said: "By no means canst thou see Me (direct); But look upon the mount; if it abide in its place, then shalt thou see Me." When his Lord manifested His glory on the Mount, He made it as dust. And Moses fell down in a swoon. When he recovered his senses he said: "Glory be to Thee! to Thee I turn in repentance, and I am the first to believe." (7:143).
"And this was the legacy that Abraham left to his sons, and so did Jacob; "Oh my sons! Allah hath chosen the Faith for you; then die not except in the Faith of Islam," (2:132).

Hey kodimirpal....There are many numerical contradictions in the Quran. Can God make so much error in doing simple calculations?

How many days did it take to create Heavens and Earth ?

Quran 7: 54 Your gurdian-Lord is Allah who created the heavens and earth in Six Days

Quran 10: 3 Verily your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in Six Days

Quran 11:7 He it is Who created the heavens and earth in Six Days

The above verses clearly state that God created the heaven and Allah created the heaven and the Earth in 6 days. But the verses below state something different...

Quran 41: 9 Is it that ye deny Him who created the earth in Two Days ?

Quran 41: 10 He set on the (earth) Mountains standing firm high above it, and bestowed blessing on the earth, and measured therein all things to give them nourishment in due proportion, in FOUR DAYS…

Quran 41: 12 So He completed them (heavens) as seven firmaments in Two days and …

Now do the math: 2(for earth) + 4(for nourishment) + 2 (for heavens) = 8 days; and not 6 days. So, which one is it?

Scholars need the help of the Sacred Quran in order to correct the errors in the Bible bc the Quran is completely free from errors and interpolations. Any honest expert will agree on this if he has done comparative religion.

Old and New Testaments have been copied and passed on from generation to generation and through different personalities.

The oldest document of this nature is "Jehovah", which was written some time during 9th Century A.D.

This book, although not voluminous, is still the most comprehensive document of its kind. The second book (Sacrodotal), although generally treated as Preface to the Bible, came to light in 600 B.C.

The Bible repeats the statements of the Old Testament as adopted by St. Luke.

Quran made its appearance six hundred years after Jesus and furnished valuable material on Man and his creation which was (and still is) totally lacking in the Old as well as the New Testaments and other Scriptures.

What is more important is this context is that unlike the Bible's Old and New Testaments, Quran is completely free from errors and interpolations.

The compilers of the Holy Scriptures, in their vanity, presumed to have compiled them on the basis of heavenly revelations. But all their efforts were the echoes of their period resounding the thoughts prevalent in that particular environment.

The church did accept this truth They admitted that some parts of these Bibles are defective and contradictory in purport.

In Exodus 20: 2-5 we read:
I am the Lord your God...Worship no god but me...I tolerate no rivals.

And Deuteronomy 6: 4 is variously rendered as:
Hear O Israel, the LORD - and the LORD alone - is our God.
or
The LORD, our God, is the only God.
or
The LORD our God is one.

There seems no scope for a "Son of God" or Trinity based on those readings, only for God "the Father" in Christian parlance or Allah as He is known to Muslims. [Allah is simply the Arabic word for the God (capital G). He is not some other deity, as some people in the West mistakenly think.

Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians use the word "Allah" too and "Allah" appears throughout the Arabic Bible.]

This understanding that a literal, physical Son of God would have been (and still is) blasphemous to Jews was subsequently confirmed to me in private correspondence with a Jewish university professor of religion.

Speaking of the Jewish understanding of the Messiah, he stated: "The figure described here is clearly a human being, not a divinity or son of God".

Saint Paul's missionary work was overwhelmingly directed at polytheist pagans in the northern Mediterranean.

In Corinth he gave up in exasperation on the Jews who stayed faithful to the worship of God alone and to the oneness of God.

“And they claim, none shall ever enter paradise unless he be Jew or a Christian. Such are their wishful beliefs. Say “Produce evidence for what you are claiming, if what you say is true.”
Yea, indeed everyone who surrenders his whole being unto God, and does good deeds, shall have his reward with his Sustainer, and all such need have no fear, and neither shall they grieve.

Furthermore, the Jews assert , “The Christians have no valid ground for their beliefs,” while the christians assert , “the Jews have no valid ground for their beliefs” and both quote the same divine writ ( the Bible) Even thus, like unto what they say, have always spoken those who were devoid of knowledge, but it is God who will judge between them on Resurrection Day with regard to all on which they were wont to differ”
Holy Quran Chapter 2: Verses 111,112 and 113

The Jews mistakenly believe that prophethood was a privilege granted to the children of Israel alone.

While the Christians maintain that Jesus ( a Jew) was God’s final manifestation on earth.
The Jews and Christians believe that salvation is reserved to its followers alone.

But the Quran gives three simple, straight forward conditions for salvation: 1. Belief in one True Almighty God: Pure Monotheism 2. Doing Good Deeds : Being Righteous 3. Believing in accountability after death. We invite Jews and Christians to judge themselves the logic behind.

Surah 18:89-98 says Alexander the Great was a devout Muslim and lived to a ripe old age. Historical records show that Alexander the Great died young at 33 years of age.  He believed he was divine and forced others to recognize him as such.  In India on the Hyphasis River Alexander erected twelve altars to twelve Olympian gods.

Bear in mind that Qur’an does not mention the title "Alexander the great," but rather Zul-Qarnain (two-horned one) which may also mean "period or century." (1) In addition, "who was he? In what age and where did he live? The Qur’an gives us no material on which we can base a positive answer."

In the days gone by, access and availability to social, academic and scientific knowledge was either limited or non-existent.

People of learning used to base their opinions on whatever information was on hand.

In the case of those Muslim commentators on the Holy Qur’an who identify Zul-Qarnain with Alexander the great, we simply cannot blame them for their erroneous interpretation.

The time-domain they lived in and the resources available to them, they, accordingly, explained the Qur’anic text to the best of their ability. Despite the fact that they were all sincere and good hearted scholars, they were bound to incorporate within their work certain cultural elements of which they were part of: "no other man has been claimed - in legends - by so many nations. Egyptian fable makes him god. Arabo-Persian tradition represents Is-kander as a hero-saint." The only common factor on which these scholars based their opinions is the expeditions carried by Alexander and Zul_Qarnain. Other than this, there are hardly any other characteristics that are common in both.

The Orthodox Jews believe that the Torah was given by God in its entirety. We as Christians believe that the Bible was written by men inspired by God.

How would you explain David's wrong doing?

Certainly parts of the OT and NT contain the actual words of God. But most of the OT and NT have been heavily corrupted

"Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands, and then say: "This is from God," to traffic with it for miserable price!- Woe to them for what their hands do write, and for the gain they make thereby. (The Noble Quran, 2:79)"

Please, I am not claiming that GOD Almighty agreed with the pornography of King David in the Bible. In fact, I don't even believe that King David did any of this. I proved below that the Books that claim this about King David are corrupted and unreliable and full of man-made doubts and lies.

David watches a women bathe, likes what he sees, and "goes in unto her." Let us look at 2 Samuel 11:2-4

"One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, 'Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?' Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (She had purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she went back home." ”

There are more versions of the Hebrew Bible than any other collection of books in the Western Canon. We are lucky to have one copy of Aristotle's lecture notes, none of his finished writings survived. The same goes for many other authors, in many cases no copy of their books survive, in some just one or part of one, in some just a few quotations in other people's books. The Jewish scribes and rabbis did an incredible job of preserving and replicating the texts over a period on 2,500 years, thru centuries of persecution and deprivation. This project is one more step in a process of continual self-correction. I wish the scholars Godspeed in their project.

I love when atheists become sudden experts on that which they claim not to believe.

When I was an atheist I wasted little time on the "nonsense" people believed. But thank God it is the Truth which offends.

Many people think that the Bible somehow trancends errors in translation, changes made to further an agenda, or word substitution when the new language doesn't have a word to match the meaning or feeling of that used in the original text. While these scholars work diligently to convey the closest possible translation to the original, the Bibles used by modern Christian churches has flaws. During the translation of the King James Version of the modern Bible, the English word "witches" was used to replace a word that more closely translates as poisoners or traitors. The King specifically requested this change (King James commissioned the translation, he didn't actually perform it), as he was convinced that magical practices had been used on no less than four occasions.Other errors, including the omission of several words that there was no English equivilent for, and a change that said that you should kill your children. have been corrected through the centuries. Even in matters of the sacred, humanity can always find a way to screw things up.
