13 Vegetarian Or Vegan Comedians (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/13/11 05:56 PM ET   Updated: 10/13/11 06:12 AM ET

Vegetarians and vegans, long ridiculed by comedians as fussy, holier-than-thou types intent on pushing their meatless agenda on carnivores, have entered the mainstream over the last decade or so. In fact, the very comedians who once would have poked fun at their diets now appear to be joining their ranks in larger numbers.

We found 13 comedians whom you may or may not have known adhere to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. Will they inspire you to change your eating habits, or do you prefer to keep your food and comedy separate?

I did not know that many of these coedians are vegan/vegetarian. It is an impressive list. All the unprocessed plant foods have plenty of fiber while animal foods have no fiber. There are many theories why the plant based diet is better, but here is a fact. A life long vegetarian just turned 110 years old. Also there is a vetetarian that is 113 years old. The oldest living person 115 years old. http://bit.ly/LaPallo Sarah Silverman looks really great.

Vegetarianism is inarguably healthier than omnivorism. Here's one huge study mentioned in huffpo a few years ago.

Does anyone remember the Bill Cosby bit that ended with the line "He's eating bushes!"?

The spontaneous appearance of ethical vegetarianism and veganism in many cultures is a sign Homo sapiens continues to evolve. We are culturally changing to become a better species. Vegans care about people, other species and the world. Vegetarianism/veganism is an emergent property not predicted by previous human evolution.

I want to separate two things. First, about the current practices of large-scale factory farming. It is so savage, so cruel to animals, that there is no room for an academic discussion. We must end these horrific atrocities immediately. Regulations, boycott, whatever it takes. I think every reasonable human should get on board with this. I hope all posters here agree with me on this one.

The second thing is about eating meat under ideal circumstances. Humanely, organically raised, humanely killed etc. Well, I honestly don't know. My own personal decision is that I chose not to live like that. I am not sure it is the right thing but it feels better than when I used to eat meat. But I am NOT doing it for health reasons. It is a moral choice that is meaningful to me and if I it has negative consequences on my health, so be it. It is at least, good for my soul.

I want to ask every one to do all they can to put an end to factory farming in its current form.

You're a vegan and you're seriously still wondering if there is a way to "humanely kill"? Really? About "ideal circumstances"?

You know that there is no such thing as "Happy Meat" ... go watch ANY animal being slaughtered -- they resist it, they fight for their lives, the do NOT kneel down and gratefully offer their lives. Seriously, if you're truly a vegan "not just for health reasons", then stand up for ALL animals.

I guess not. Apparently his vegetarianism is a recent thing. Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C. has a dish called "Bill Cosby’s Original Chili Half-Smoke," which it describes as follows: "Our signature dish! Experience the Chili Half-Smoke, originally made famous by Ben’s in 1958 and a favorite of Mr. Cosby’s since the early 60’s. We put this 1/4lb. half pork and beef smoked sausage on a warm steamed bun and top it with mustard, onions and our spicy homemade chili sauce. There are few culinary delights better at any price. Want it well done? Have yours split and grilled on request."

We use Danish pudding as a substitute. It's more watery, but it works in many recipes.

I craved Whoppers the first few years, then the thought of them made me sick. That's when I knew I'd never go back. It's been about 20 years.

I still wish I'd eaten more seafood, which I'd never been exposed to as a child, especially shrimp and lobster. I miss them, but not enough to eat them.

The best way to stick to a vegetarian diet is to be a great cook. Then, you will always eat great food with or without meat.

I LOVE cheeseburgers. I'm ovo-lacto, so I buy Morningstar Griller Prime and put thick slices of cheddar cheese on it. I had one earlier this evening with tomatoes from my garden.

What a shame. They've all drunk the "Vegan is healthier for you" kool-aid myth. Too bad they have no idea of just how horribly unhealthy a vegan lifestyle is for the human body. For one thing, the human brain needs animal fat and protein to function properly, without it the human brain shrinks and becomes more susceptible to neurological diseases like Alzheimer's.

Where do you get your info/facts?
10:49 PM on 08/16/2011
Studies have found severe B12 deficiencies at levels likely to cause permanent, irreversible damage in more than half of all vegans, which is a health nightmare. Here are two of those studies, both peer reviewed and published in two of the foremost medical journals in the field:
http://www.nature.com/ejcn/journal/v64/n9/abs/ejcn2010142a.html
http://www.ajcn.org/content/78/1/131.full

Studies also show that severe B12 deficiencies, which are vastly more common for vegans than omnivores, lead to severely increased risk of brain atrophy, so you do the math. The facts are clearly on Patrick's side.

People believe what they want to believe, regardless of the facts. Hopefully, if you start to feel depressed, sluggish, mentally confused, etc. at some point down the road, you'll take the time to educate yourself by reading something other than vegan propaganda. Good luck to you!

I used to be vegetarian for many years and became a vegan only when I found out more about the dairy and egg industries.

While I hope that eventually we will all be vegans, I know that it will not happen any time soon.

But if you understand what factory farming is doing to defenseless animals, you must boycott those products and do whatever you can to end this horrific atrocity.

You can boycott the products of factory farms without becoming a vegan.

Exactly. World-wide veganism is my dream, but a boycott of factory farming is something that all people should consider right now. Buy local, buy organic. Buy the humane labels.

You can pretend that you are boycotting products from factory farms, however, factory farm byproducts are built into the system. That's why I find the grass-fed movement a joke. FYI - you are not really gonna change the system that way.

Veganism is the best diet for sure, unfortunately most of us grew up with the USDA propoganda to eat your meat, and drink your milk. Anything to get some money to support those already subsidized industries.
