Jared Ropelato, Lost Boy Scout, Safe After Night In Utah Forest

By MARTIN GRIFFITH   08/14/11 12:20 AM ET   AP

-- The 12-year-old Boy Scout was scared but he still knew what to do when he got lost during a Utah wilderness outing: He built a shelter made of tree branches and wood to get through a cold night and he also covered himself in dirt to stay warm.

Jared Ropelato's lean-to – a crude structure the Boy Scout manual advises Scouts to build if they become lost – kept him warm enough so he could sleep after the overnight low in Ashley National Forest dipped to 31 degrees in the area, said Daggett County sheriff's spokeswoman Karen Peterson.

The boy was wearing only jeans and a shirt, and had no food or water, when he went missing around noon Friday. He had gotten lost while making his way by himself back to camp from a nearby lake, walking a total of eight or nine miles before searchers on ATVs found him Saturday morning some four miles from where he started, Peterson said.

"He did everything right last night," his mother, Dawn, said. "We said he was smart, and he's smart."

Peterson also praised the boy, saying that building the lean-to was "good thinking" and it saved him from the elements. He told the Deseret News of Salt Lake City that he had learned to build the structure last year at Scout camp.

"We're just so glad that this story has a happy ending," Peterson told The Associated Press.

Jared's mother told the Deseret News that her son's biggest scare came when he encountered a bull moose. He got cold during the night, but not too cold. He fell in a river Saturday morning, "but he's still dirty," she said.

Jared resumed walking Saturday morning before he was found at 8:40 a.m. in good health, ending a search effort that included about 200 people.

"There were a lot of tears not only from family members, but from searchers as well," Peterson said. "Up to that point, Jared had been missing for 20 hours and 40 minutes."

Nicole Ropelato of Roy, a third cousin of Jared's, said the family was thankful for searchers and that the boy remembered the instruction about lean-tos.

"At such a young age to be calm enough to think like that is something," she said. "That's incredible what he did. We're just elated that he was found in good condition. We were worried for him and very scared."

The boy earlier had been advised by a Scoutmaster to walk with another Scout from the lake back to camp, Peterson said. The Scoutmaster gave him the advice after finding him going in the wrong direction while returning to camp.

"He never got a buddy before heading back to camp," Peterson said.

Asked if he would still go camping after his overnight ordeal, Jared simply said "yeah."

This young man was very fortunate to have had Boy Scout skills that he was able to rely on. However, he did forget the "buddy system" for these type of wilderness events. I think he also had a "guardian angel" watching over him;he and his family were very lucky, or it could have been a terrible outcome.

Good for him! A future leader! He kept his head and survived. It is an remarkable accomplishment that very few of these commentors could do! City slickers. Bah.

say what you will, but if not for this boy's training, they would have found him dead from hypo-thermia. thirty one degrees without the proper clothing and/or shelter is very hard to overcome.

Highly doubtful that he would have died from a few hours at 31degrees. Very cold and miserable and yes hypothermic but not dead.

Despite his training, he managed to get lost.

what part of his being 12 years old don't you get ? anyone can get lost at any age. it's how we handle it that sets us apart. why would you want to diminish this boy's accomplishment ?

As a parent I've would have done this....In front of the crowd and cameras....."I'm so glad you're in my arms again. And you're so smart listening to survival classes and applying the lessons.
BUT ONCE AT HOME IN PRIVATE.....I'm gonna Whip your A*s! WHY....you did not listen to the scoutmaster and causing people to risk their lives in an effort to save yours!

That should earn him a badge. He handled that better than some adults.

Yeah, great idea. How about one for ignoring the advice of a Scoutmaster, who told him not to travel alone, and another for being unprepared (did not know the way, did not have extra clothes, did not havve food or water). Not exactly Scouting principles there... BUT he does deserve credit for building the survival shelter so there's hope for him to improve.

Sign this kid up for special forces before we lose him, again. This is so funny, the adult had already figured out he was directionally challenged and tried to attach him to another kid, but oh nooooooooooooooooooooo, jared would have none of that.

Here is my suggestion, give that kid a GPS and some breadcrums and do not let him walk home alone from school.

So so so happy he was found safe and sound! SMart boy! I always felt in my heart he'd be found safe :)

As a Scouter for 26 years I am extremely frustrated. First of all, we teach the buddy system in Scouting which was violated in this instance. Secondly, the leadership of the Troop is at fault for not keeping the group together. Poor leadership coupled with violation of the rules is what caused this to happen. Fortunately, some of the training this Scout received saved his life and I am glad he is OK. But, it should have never happened if the rules set up by BSA were enforced and lived up to.

"He walked "eight or nine MILES" alone"

In circles probably.

Mr. Wonderful, would it hurt you to say something nice? We all cannot be as perfect as you, and some of we mere mortals make mistakes. I think it is fantastic that the boy knew what to do, and that his life was saved by using his brain and following what he had been taught to do. He even taught me a lesson if I ever go out in the woods (doubtful) but at least I know what to do now.

If he had used his brain, and his ears, he wouldn't have got lost in the first place.

I'm glad that he knew these life saving skills, every child and adult should know how to survive in the circumstance that they have too. I'm glad he's ok
