13 Underappreciated Comedies (VIDEOS)

First Posted: 08/16/11 05:15 PM ET   Updated: 10/16/11 06:12 AM ET

Our friends at Splitsider recently posted a great piece on the criminally overlooked Hamlet 2, and it got us thinking about some of our other favorite unsung comedies. From the truly great yet woefully ignored, to the flawed yet endearing, here is a list of 13 movies we recommend you give a second -- or in many cases, first -- chance.

Hamlet 2

If Steve Coogan were the only good thing about "Hamlet 2" it would still be worth seeing. Fortunately, he's not. This movie is overflowing with awkward charm, and when they finally get to the play, it delivers big time.

The Wrong Guy with Dave Foley and Jennifer Tilly. Really. You have to check it out. Go to YouTube and look for "The Wrong Guy - My name is Jones..." This is the scene that makes me laugh so hard my stomach hurts every single damn time.

Pootie Tang? REALLY?!?!? I saw it in the theater and was supremely disappointed. But good choices with Undercover Brother, BASEketball, and Orgazmo.

Wristcutters is a really smart and emotional film. Odd but that is my style.

After reading this feature, I rented "Joe vs. the Volcano." Overall, not all that funny.

Tom Hanks is nice, as usual, but only so-so funny. Maybe two of his lines are amusing, but that ain't much for a full-length feature.
Meg Ryan plays three characters: pretty-but-shy office girl, pretty-but-loony L.A. chick and really-pretty-but-always-wearing-foul-weather-gear sailing rich girl. She too has maybe two funny lines.
Cameos by Lloyd Bridges, Abe Vigoda and Dan Hadaya are almost -- but not quite -- funny enough.
The plot is almost-but-not-quite clever and...you get the idea.

The luggage scene might be funny if you were ripped, but as you can see in the video that goes with this article, it's not THAT funny.

Two good performers, bland script, mediocre story line.
As one 20-year-old viewer said, "Well, it wasn't terrible."

Nor 'under-appreciated.'

Of the 13 films listed above, I haven't seen them all. But I have to say that Hamlet 2 and Joe vs. the Volcano are not only hilarious in their own ways, but they actually strike some emotional chords as well. Hamlet 2 speaks to the underdogs in all of us, especially artists. Even though Dana Marsz is completely ridiculous, you can't help but feel for the guy in that his ambitions are sincere.

In JVTV, when Joe's adrift at sea and looks at the moon...wow, that was a moment. The film maintained this emotional tone to it; but I've always had a problem with the last 1/3 of the film when they land on the island...the film just goes to sillyville from there. It seemed as if the film was going too long in one direction, and the screenwriter and/or director had to filp it on its ear. Weird, but love it anyway.

Oh, can I add #14? Cedar Rapids! John C. Reilly stole the show. He was so damn funny, I think he should be nominated for that.

Some good ones, but I would have liked to see Super Troopers on that list... Hebrew Hammer was pretty funny too with Chris Katan.
