Does anyone remember his appearance on this year's Oscars? Franco and Hathaway were sucking so badly that Billy Crystal got a standing ovation when he came out.

I think it would be great to have him host again. With the exception of Alec Baldwin and Steven Martin, the hosts have not been good in recent years.

I don't know if it would attract the younger audience they're after, but I'm willing to bet the ratings would increase for at least one Crystal return, and I'd welcome it. I've always thought they missed a bet (unintentional pun) not having had Midler host (but she's no chicken now, either).

Maybe, before they commit themselves to the younger demo, they could do a one-time blast with duties shared by "old-timers" (talkin' 'bout my generation) Crystal, Martin and Goldberg, and have Bette for a fourth.

Neil Patrick Harris could handle it (I don't know if he skews "young" enough); he's done a fine job on the Tony's, but his association with them is probably the reason Oscar producers would never have him host.

I'll admit to being somewhat behind the pop-culture curve, but I wonder if there isn't a dearth today of the kind of well-rounded performers who can both carry such a show and is comfortable before a live audience.

God, I hope so. Anybody but James Franco again! At least with Billy, the only drugs he'll be taking before the show would be an antacid, high blood pressure and arthritis anti-inflammatories.
