Latinos To Obama: Change On Immigration Or Else

Deportation

First Posted: 08/16/11 07:55 PM ET Updated: 10/16/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Some Latinos around the country rallied on Tuesday against the White House's deportation policies, attempting to send a message to President Barack Obama that they may not support him for reelection if he continues to deport record numbers of undocumented immigrants.

"We don't need to discourage people from voting for President Obama," rally organizer Roberto Lovato of the Latino organization Presente.org told HuffPost. "He's doing a smashing job of it himself."

Latinos came out in record numbers for Obama in 2008, helping propel him to victory over John McCain. Obama's support from Latinos was based on his personality and politics, but also his rhetoric on immigration -- consistently among the top issues for many Latino voters.

Obama promised to deliver immigration reform and create paths to citizenship for some of the estimated 11 million undocumented people living in the United States. But after two years in office, he has yet to achieve even incremental steps toward comprehensive immigration reform, and meanwhile has expanded immigration enforcement to record levels.

Obama deported 393,000 people in the 2010 fiscal year, with an overall deportation record that far exceeds his predecessor, George W. Bush.

Some Latinos now have a message for the president: If deportations continue at high rates, he should not count on their votes in 2012.

"We know that the people in the Obama campaign ... are running a campaign that assumes that Latino voters will take anything over a Republican, including a Democrat that is worse than a Republican on immigration," Lovato said. "Our actions are to show that you're wrong."

Still, he said, they are not encouraging voters not to vote for Obama. "The idea is to save the Obama campaign" from defeat by a Republican, Lovato told HuffPost.

It's a message Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) has made as well. Gutierrez is applying pressure to the Obama administration to halt some deportations as part of a campaign he calls "Change Takes Courage." He said some Latinos may withhold votes from Obama unless he makes changes to his deportation policy, although he acknowledged that the alternatives are also unappealing to many.

"It's not about voting for the Tequila Party and it's not about voting for Republicans," he said in June. "I don't see Latinos doing that. What I see them doing is staying home."

The Obama campaigne has continued to court Latino voters, with the president visiting the border states and Puerto Rico for speeches, as well as appearing at a national conference for Latino organization National Council of La Raza.

"The President remains committed to fixing our broken immigration system while most of the Republican presidential candidates, and Republican leaders in Congress, are opposed to a comprehensive solution," Gabriela Domenzain, spokeswoman for the Obama campaign said in an email statement.

One conflict is over Secure Communities, an immigration enforcement program that shares fingerprints taken by local police with immigration authorities. Hundreds of Latinos and immigrants' rights supporters packed into a conference room to discuss their problems with the program on Monday evening.

The Obama administration announced on Aug. 5 that it would terminate its memorandums of agreement with states over participating in the program, effectively removing the states' ability to say no to what was originally touted as a voluntary program.

DHS has attempted to respond to some criticisms of the program, announcing in June it will reform the program to protect victims of crime and prevent racial profiling, two major concerns cited by critics of the program.

"DHS and ICE have been receptive to the community’s concerns and have worked with community stakeholders, law enforcement and ICE officials to make significant changes to the Secure Communities program, announced on June 17, to protect civil rights, protect victims of domestic violence and other crimes and to ensure the program is consistent with the top enforcement priorities," said Domenzain of the Obama campaign.

More than half of those deported under the program have criminal records, the administration announced in a document meant to "set the record straight" on Tuesday.

Still, immigration reform supporters argue the program should be discontinued altogether. They delivered thousands of petitions to the Obama campaign headquarters in Chicago, and held protests at Democratic offices in Houston, Boston, Miami, Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C.

“We have a president who promised in 2008 to pass immigration reform during his first year in office; he promised to be a friend for the Latino community," Presente.org organizer Carlos Roa said in a statement. "As president, he has delivered the total opposite of his promises. His decision to mandate [Secure Communities] is a direct and devastating attack to Latinos and immigrants. He must do the right thing and end [Secure Communities] now."

It's awesome that the Obama administration feels like it's necessary to "clarify" their record... to justify enforcing the law. Don't worry Barry: on the flip side, you also sue states for enforcing their laws, and put illegals' concerns in front of unemployed Americans.

From "Demolition Man," 1993

Squad Leader: Simon Phoenix! Lie down with your hands behind your back.
Simon Phoenix: What's this? Six of you. Such nice, tidy uniforms. Oh I'm so scared!
[the Police Officers look at each other]
Simon Phoenix: What you guys don't have sarcasm anymore?
[Police Officer talks to his automated assistant]
Squad Leader: Maniac has responded with a scornful remark.
automated assistant: Approach, and repeat ultimatum in an even firmer tone of voice. Add the words, "or else".

We all know how well that worked out...

Once again. The system is not broken. Just because it does not cater to those with a proximity advantage to the U.S. does not mean it is broken.

We have become so passive to people doing as they wish rather than following procedures that we no longer can tell the difference.

GO after corps that hire illegals. Go after roofing and siding companies that hire a legal foreman who then hires illegals for his crew to skirt the law. Go after the farmers. And in addition, E-verify our schools too.

The only ones we hurt when we buy into the rhetoric that the system (which all countries have) is broken, is OUR CHILDREN. They are the ones who suffer when the schools are short on money due to catering to those who should not be here. OUR CHILDREN when they go out to get an after school job to pay for their car or insurance or special trinkets. OUR CHILDREN when they apply at college and a grant is given to a child who has no business being enrolled. OUR CHILDREN whe nour colleges can only take on so many students and there are students who should not be there.

OUR CHILDREN when they get into the work force and Illegals have driven down the wages and or taken jobs that should go to citizens.

The system is NOT BROKEN. It has worked properly for many years.

You just need to USE the system for it to work.
It is not broken ... it has been put in mothballs, and ignored.

Only US Citizens are protected by all of the rights provided in the Constitution.
There is no right of assembly, or protest, for guest ... and illegals.
This would not happen in Alabama, and if it did, many would be on their way back to Mexico.

No reward for disrespect, threats, or any criminal activity.

No amnesty, no reform, until there are no illegals.

David,
You are wrong about the constitution. The constitution operates on the government not the people. Demanding gov provide due process and prohibiting gov from doing this and that. The constitution is the chain that binds government.
At least that is the theory, reality is gov does as it pleases for the most part.

Regrettably, I disagree with you. We have the ONLY Constitution completely designed to LIMIT A ND CHECK THE POWERS OF GOVT. You have it completely backwards.

One has to wonder; how many of the sign-holders are actually legal US residents? Dare to deport me and I won't vote for you! Really??!!

Arrogance on top of the entitlement attitude....how typical! I would like to suggest a plan that might help legal hispanic citizens with their problem. How about letting every legal hispanic family sponsor an illegal family? By sponsor, I mean that the host family would be required to support their illegal family in any they needed, including paying their rent, medical care....actually supporting them until they are able/willing to support themselves. Illegal families would not be entitled to any government benefits. Those who commit crimes would have the fees related to their incarceration paid by their "sponsors". Sponsors who failed to live up to their support responsibilities would have their assets seized. To become a sponsor, one would have to provide proof that they are able to support another family. Problem solved. all thos wonderful illegals you want here, can be here....as long as you willing to take their burden off the rest of us.

i am not in favor of illegal immigration, however i do believe that anyone has the right to apply for and receive legal resident status following a thorough investigation and/or a background check and maintain a clean record, pay taxes and contribute to this country.

what i do not and will never support is the illegals residing in my country trying to change the laws. why not protest and demand change in their country of origin. these are the type of people that undermine our laws and do need to be deported at all cost.

This latest Obama administration announcement on a change in deportation policy is a bunch of fluff. Cases are closed administratively but can be reopened at any time.

At some point the good people of America and Mexico will have to take a stand against the America/Mexican failed immigration and drug policies of both govenments.

So, Obama may lose most Latino support if he keeps deporting illegals and thus may lose the election to the GOP next year, a party who traditionally has been tougher on illegal immigration... Is this really the stance the Latino community thinks is wise? How much more sympathetic do they think Democrats are going to be to illegals with the economy in the toilet, high unemployment, and almost everyone here screaming "FIX IT!!!"... Beggars can't be choosers.
09:02 PM on 08/19/2011
Let's see so if President Obama does not inprove immigration latinos won't vote for him? Do you really think that a Republican president and a Tea Partier at that is going to be any nicer to all illegal immigrants. Last time I checked if you were in the country illegal...you are illegal. From what I read about the change in the deportation ruling if you were a criminal or committed illegal acts on U.S. soil you are going to be deported? What's the problem with that? You really need to get your priorities right. Better the devil you know (who is willing to work with you) than the devil you don't (Republicans=Tea Party).

both the repuclicans and the democrats, have done in the citizens and america in. that is what people need to understand. but, what happens in the elections, is some people do infact... vote for what they consider the lessor of two evils. turns out, that in a two party system, there is really no one to vote for.
