Michele Bachmann's Elvis Birthday Message Comes On Anniversary Of 'The King's' Death (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/16/11 03:42 PM ET Updated: 10/16/11 06:12 AM ET

During a stop in South Carolina on Tuesday, Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann wished the late Elvis Presley a "Happy Birthday."

The problem: the message from the conservative congresswoman comes on the anniversary of the death of the "King of Rock and Roll."

"Before we get started, let's all say 'Happy Birthday' to Elvis Presley today," said Bachmann while speaking in the Palmetto State. "We played you a little bit of promise land when we pulled up. You can't do better than Elvis Presley."

Elvis was born on January 8, 1935.

While it's unlikely the gaffe will cost Bachmann, the presidential contender is no stranger to making questionable remarks. Over the weekend, Bachmann emerged victorious in the Ames Straw Poll, a table-setter for next year's Iowa caucuses.

Via Mauldin Patch in South Carolina comes video of Bachmann's remarks.

Bachmann: wrong about the little things, wrong about the big things and wrong for America.

How many years will have to pass before the GOP realizes that wingnuts do NOT make good president!

What's weird isn't so much that she didn't know what day Elvis was born. It's that she was about 21 years old in 1977 and living in the United States, but somehow has not enough memory of his death -- the headlines, the radio stations all switching to Elvis songs -- to recall that it was in or near August. It's not quite as weird as someone who was an adult on November 22, 1963 not remembering the Kennedy assassination, but it does suggest she isn't very engaged with the world around her.

Birth, death. Same diff. Brother, sister, husband, wife. Same diff. Palin, Bachman. Same diff. Foster kids, sex slaves. Same diff, T Party, Al Qaeda, Same diff. Rick Perry, Liberace. Santa Claus, Jesus Christ. Same diff. Just semantics people, get over it

She was reading the Jehovaprompter; spiritually a death is the birth of a new life. Happy birthday Elvis.

Elvis was born in January and she wished him a Happy Birthday in August just because she rode into town on her buggy?

How much is she looking like Palin at the moment with gaffe after gaffe? I wonder what she thought when she won the "Straw Poll"?

I believe gaffes of this sort illustrate the extent to which she attends to details and listens. This seriously concerns me and is of even greater concern when I recognize that there are Americans who like her. Where is our judgment? How do we elect persons who are this inattentive, consider the consequences of the mistakes they could make as head of state.

How many people died in that Tornado in Kansas? 10,000? or was it 11?

If our bigger concern is how inattentive the person may be, shouldn't we also be concerned about our current president? He has a long list of gaffs as well.

Perhaps so, but it's a safe bet he doesn't think creationism is real science and AGW is a myth. Can't say the same for Bachmann.

Cheers!

she can't listen.... look at those eyes... she's always in some "Zone" out there, makes me think of the '60's scifi show "The Outer Limits."

Must be a trip living with her.
