Mikhail Gorbachev Criticizes Vladimir Putin, Says Russia Needs Change (VIDEO)

By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV   08/17/11 10:58 AM ET   AP

MOSCOW -- Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev criticized the government on Wednesday for taking Russia backward and said that the nation needs free elections and fresh leadership.

He was speaking ahead of the 20th anniversary of Aug. 19, 1991, hardline coup that briefly ousted him and precipitated the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Gorbachev, who turned 80 in March and underwent spinal surgery in April, looked strong and spoke energetically during a news conference that lasted more than an hour.

Gorbachev criticized the United Russia party led by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, which he described as a bad copy of the Soviet Communist Party.

He said Russia needs to restore direct elections of governors and of individual seats in parliament, which were abolished during Putin's presidency.

"Honest elections are needed: single-ballot elections, elections of governors," Gorbachev said. "People must have a feeling that something depends on them."

He dismissed the Popular Front, an umbrella group of public organizations, professional associations and unions created with Putin's blessing.

"They invent some unnecessary groups, some fronts," Gorbachev said, adding that government spin doctors might just as well invent something like "10 Putin Strikes" – a sardonic reference to "10 Stalin Strikes," a term used by Soviet propaganda to describe the Red Army's offensives during World War II.

The front's creation has been seen as an attempt by Putin to strengthen his support base ahead of parliamentary elections in December and a presidential vote in March.

Putin, who shifted into the prime minister's job in 2008 because of a two-term constitutional limit, is widely expected to reclaim the presidency.

Gorbachev avoided personal criticism of Putin, saying that he deserves credit for stabilizing the country after the economic meltdown and chaos of the first post-Soviet decade. A the same time, he harshly criticized the system of government created by Putin, saying that manipulations of elections had pushed the country back.

"There must be a change in the upper layer of government," he said.

Gorbachev long has been critical of Putin's policies, warning that the lack of political competition, flawed elections and rampant corruption have stymied Russia's development.

Popular in the West for the role he played in ending the Cold War, Gorbachev is disliked by many at home for the collapse of the Soviet Union and the years of turmoil that followed it.

He insisted Wednesday that the U.S.S.R. could have been preserved through gradual democratic changes and acknowledged making mistakes that led to the August 1991 coup, which dealt a deadly blow to the Soviet Union.

Gorbachev admitted that he had placed excessive trust in some of his aides and allies and was too slow in reforming the Communist Party, where the old guard was fiercely resisting reforms. He also recognized that ill-conceived economic reforms resulted in empty shelves, fueling public discontent.

Gorbachev insisted that his main focus at the time was to avoid bloodshed. "There could have been a civil war," he said. "A civil war in a country rigged with nuclear weapons."

He said that he still considers himself a happy person.

"I found myself in the epicenter of major events, where I was making decisions that led to positive changes," he said.

Putin - The Perpetual President or Prime Minister - Power is addictive, that is, habit forming. He won't be able to put aside his addiction for the good of the country because like all addicts he thinks that what he is saying is always right. Watch Putin Run..for the presidency, that is.

I always find it an endless source of amusement when a failed politician like Gorby is trying to advise an extremely successful politician like Putin.

It's like Jimmuh Carter advising Bill Clinton.

I don't think it needs fresh leadership. When you have a good, solid leader, it doesn't matter what type of system is in place, you will get a good, solid like. If you have a selfish, evil leader, doesn't matter if you have a republic, democracy, etc, the selfish evil one will exploit it. The leader is important, not the system in my opinion.

Commonwealth Independent States, now Custom Union, the truth is, Russian Primary Goal is reintegrate former soviet states into new country name "Union State" (also known as Union of Soviet Sovereign Republic)
for now, Only Belarus have agree to integrate, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan also wanted to integrate. Armenia is a very pro Russian country we can get a foothold in the Caucuses if they join.

The Country that this man run doesn't exist, the Country Yeltsin ran was a joke, Democracy failed in the 90's the gangsterism was grown from the chaos, poverty, war, depression, Most people in Russia resent democracy due to that, Ultimately Russians prefer Strong leaders to weak ones. I know because my father lost his Job in the Soviet Military and mother did to, we barely had enough to live off of, Until he came Putin, I'd rather have KGB who knows what he's doing then a naive leader like Gorbachev.

He's right. Russia needs very serious reforms for long term stability and development. Russia will never reach its full potential without such reforms.

But as always, money clowds everyone's judgement. Think of the U.S. 5 years ago- many knew that things were very bad, and reforms were needed. Yet people were making good money from the housing bubble, so they didn't care about such problems. Now they are paying for it.

I saw that Putin is proposing a Euroasian Union with Russia as the lead player. Lets see,a ,Euroasian Union with Russia as its head,a Europeon Union with Germany at its head, this should be good. I say this time we just stay out of it.

Gorbachev is Russia's version of Ralph Nader and Jimmuah Carter. All rolled into one.

A failed politician who caused endless economic and political suffering, he periodically shows up to mumble a few irrelevant statements no one pays attention to, except a few liberals in the West..

I actually understand what he's trying to say. But for Gorby to utter these words takes some major chutzpah.

Putin is a good President/Prime Minister/Autoritarian for Russia. He's done a good job on the economy ( https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2187rank.html ) and they're on a good way to growing prosperity.
He needs to go after the Oligarchs who looted the former Soviet Union after the collapse initiated by Gorbachev more aggressively and lock them up in prison or gulag unless they fled to the US or London or Southern France.
I can see my Russian friends reelecting Putin.

Yes, but not really. Russia is #1 in natural resources in the world. Yet, tiny little Netherlands has more exports than Russia.

you are using the cia library as a factbook ? maybe we should go after our own oiliogarchs here that have gutted our democratic republic instead of worrying about what the people in russia choose to do. putins a thug nd continues to enrich himself off of his own countrymens strife and natural resources kinda sounds familiar.

Little doggie keeps barking. Putin is the most popular politician in Russia. As to Mr. Gorbi, his speeches are pre-paid by US State Dept (US Ministry of Truth).
