Obama Campaign Staffer Sends Out Email Bashing Paul Krugman And The 'Firebagger Lefty Blogosphere'

First Posted: 08/17/11 02:23 PM ET Updated: 10/17/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- The Obama campaign's point person in New Mexico recently sent an email to supporters defending the president's position on the debt deal and bashing the Nobel Prize winning New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and the "Firebagger Lefty blogosphere."

On the evening of Aug. 1, just after Congress passed legislation to raise the debt ceiling, Obama for America (OFA) New Mexico State Director Ray Sandoval sent an email to supporters with the subject line, "Please take 5 minutes to read this, Please."

"I know many of you have raised frustrations, but please, I implore you, please take 5 minutes and read the article below. It does a great job of explaining the Debt Ceiling deal," Sandoval wrote in bold text.

The rest of the email was a blog post taken from a blog called "The People's View," run by Spandan Chakrabarti. Chakrabarti writes that he has "been participating in online and offline liberal activism since 2003, when Gov. Howard Dean ran for president."

The blog post that Sandoval thought was important enough to share with others harshly condemns Krugman and progressive bloggers who have been critical of Obama. From the 1,825-word post:

Paul Krugman is a political rookie. At least he is when compared to President Obama. That's why he unleashed a screed as soon as word came about the debt ceiling compromise between President Obama and Congressional leaders - to, you know, avert an economic 9/11. Joining the ideologue spheres' pure, fanatic, indomitable hysteria, Krugman declares the deal a disaster - both political and economic - of course providing no evidence for the latter, which I find curious for this Nobel winning economist. He rides the coattails of the simplistic argument that spending cuts - any spending cuts - are bad for a fragile economy, ignoring wholeheartedly his own revious cheerleading for cutting, say, defense spending. But that was back in the day - all the way back in April of this year. [...]

No, the loudest screeching noise you hear coming from Krugman and the ideologue Left is, of course, Medicare. Oh, no, the President is agreeing to a Medicare trigger!!! Oh noes!!! Everybody freak out right now! But let's look at the deal again, shall we? [...]

Now let's get to the fun part: the triggers. The more than half-a-trillion in defense and security spending cut "trigger" for the Republicans will hardly earn a mention on the Firebagger Lefty blogosphere. Hell, it's a trigger supposedly for the Republicans, and of course, there's always It'sNotEnough-ism to cover it.

"Firebagger" is most likely a combined reference to the liberal blog FireDogLake, founded by Jane Hamsher, and "Tea Bagger," a less-than-flattering term for Tea Party activists.

When contacted by The Huffington Post, Sandoval simply replied, "I have sent your request up to my folks. I will let you know when I hear from them."

Sandoval did not reply to a follow-up message about who his "folks" were.

"The bipartisan debt agreement put in place a balanced framework for the next phase to ensure that special interests and the wealthiest are asked to bear some of the burden of deficit reduction, rather than saddling middle class families and seniors with costs and taking extreme measures like ending Medicare as we know it," replied Katie Hogan, deputy press secretary for the Obama campaign. "The views expressed in this email do not represent the views of the campaign."

The Obama administration has, at times, had a contentious relationship with both Krugman and the progressive blogosphere.

In 2007, Krugman was a vocal critic of Obama's proposed health care plan. The Obama campaign responded with an opposition-research style document accusing the columnist of flip-flopping.

In August 2010, then-White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed the president's progressive critics, referring to them as "the professional left."

"I hear these people saying he's like George Bush," said Gibbs. "Those people ought to be drug tested. I mean, it's crazy."

Obama himself has personally tried to reassure left-leaning bloggers, at times even encouraging dissent. In a video message sent last year to attendees of the Netroots Nation conference -- an annual gathering of progressive bloggers and activists, Obama said, "What I’m asking you is to keep making your voices heard. To keep holding me accountable. To keep up the fight."

UPDATE: 3:24 p.m. -- Hamsher responds: "[I]f this is a brilliant political strategy on the part of OFA, someone is going to have to explain it to me. I know the goal is to attract the much-prized Independent for 2012. But who do they think is keeping Obama's poll numbers afloat? ... What exactly does OFA think they stand to gain by ridiculing Krugman as a 'political rookie,' a hysterical 'fanatic' and an 'idealogue'? Do they think they hold so much sway with liberals that they can discredit Krugman and thus neutralize his criticism? This smacks more of narcissism and personal vendetta than any sound political 'strategy.'"

I'm not real clear on the pros and cons of the debt deal, but I have to say that Krugman was right on in criticizing the Obama health care plan. single payer was the way to go and Krugman knew it.

He's probably right about the debt deal as well.

You bet your ass Paul Krugman is right. Paul said recently that, if he had his way, he'd scrap ALL the Bush tax cuts, not just the one for the rich, to FUND recovery
from this crippling recession WITHOUT piling on more debt with more UNFUNDED stimulus packages. What gives Obama's creepy cronies the right to bash this Nobel Laureate who is the only economist in America who, unlike Mr. O (as in ZERO), has had the guts to tell us the truth whether we want to hear or not.

The biggest Tea Party lie of all is that taxes are bad for the economy.

We may all be forgetting our responsibility in this. I for one wasn't naive as much as I was loyal. I thought it was Hillary for the win and still believe in her as a politician. On the other hand if we just look at what has made Barack Obama successful we can see what he is useful for. The skills he needed to be the first black editor of the Harvard Law Review = I'm sure a fair amount of compromise? Vacillation perhaps? Selling out, so to speak? The skills he used to get elected to the senate and the presidency = Oratory. No professional record? Was he a successful lawyer? Nope. A successful professor? Nope. A successful administrator? Nope. A successful Governor of anything, anywhere? Nope.

So here we are wondering "What happened?", when the question is "What the HELL were we thinking?" (and I use the term thinking loosely.) We were so anxious after the Bush W years that we went for new and not proven. Obama proved he has what it takes to get elected but as an executive he is perhaps one of the worst in history. I dislike Bush but man o man was he or his administration effective for their base! I w3qant the same for me a liberal.

Hillary as a former member of the Walmart legal team is alas unlikely to be any more progressive. Besides being a long suffering wife of Bill, and secretary of State as a consolation prize it's wishful thinking to believe that more talent would be brought to the table. Even her experienced hubby would be unlikely to fare better with the republicans. bama chose the entire Clinton team of Wall street retreads as financial advisers. The chance of Hillary taking economic advice from Paul Krugman would at best be slim.

The American people would be wise to not keep up this charade:

Obama wins = GOP wins
Obama loses = GOP wins

Frankly I'd rather a Republican politician get the credit for Republican policies - what good does it do us to elect a Democrat only to "get" W Bush/light?

After four years of GOP policies under Obama, the Democrats will get the blame for their failure - consequently the electorate will turn to the GOP who will not be able to go further to the right without falling of the cliff.

Obama's constant GOP policy proposals coupled by his continuing capitulations only pushes the GOP go further to the right, its hard to see how much further we can go without an openly Fascist system.

The GOP proposes GOP friendly policies -
The Dems shift to the right and adopt those policies -
The GOP takes matters further to the right -
The Dems follow -
The GOP now takes things further to the right
The Dems follow...

Up till the last couple of years, Ayn Rand, The John Birch Society, Lyndon LaRouche's Libertarian party were all extremist right wing "fringe" outfits considered "out" of the American political spectrum. Now they are considered players well within the aceptable spectrum.

Com' on! How could an ignorant, opportunistic, dunderhead like Beck become "mainstream"?

How could borderline fascists like Limbaugh and Coulter become "acceptable"?

To top it off, our historic West European alies are now "pinko Socialists"... ??

"Firebagger lefty" should be a proud badge to wear. I think I will.

This president is a cold blooded, calculating sell out. If I'd wanted a conservative Wall Street

Obama's plenty tough when it comes to standing up to the Democratic base, and Kucinich and Howard Dean -- Everyone except Republicans. Just to show you where Obama's and the DLC's real heart lies, there are so many things he and the DLC/DNC could have done, could be doing, to get real Democratic legislation through, but don't. Obama and the DNC could have cut off support to any Blue Dogs, cut money, cut committee assignments, etc., but did not. There is plenty that a President and a Speaker of the House and a Senate Majority Leader can do to pressure representatives and senators into voting as you want them to vote. We saw that Obama had no problem doing it when he wanted and needed Blue Dogs like Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu's votes -- He literally bought them. There is nothing that the Blue Dogs are doing that Obama and the DLC doesn't want them to do. Before the midterms of 2010, I asked, facetiously, if Obama's 'most ardent supporters' believed that if Democrats lost control of Congress, would they be as effective at preventing the Republicans' agenda from moving forward as Republicans have been at stymieing Democrats. After all, there would still be more numbers of Democrats in Congress AND a Democratic White House. Not one of Obama's 'most ardent fans' replied.

Your account misses the other half of the story.

Liberals trash blue dogs but they also lost heavily in the 2010 election.

They were the Democrats from purple or pivotal states. They were getting roasted in their states by the health care issue. Obama refused to whistle-stop as most presidents are expected to do on an important bill that has wavering support.

Many lost their seats because of that bill, and they had every right to feel betrayed and abandoned by Obama. So now the fellow is out in Iowa "not" campaigning for himself? Timely and wonderful of him.

I'm really tired of you shilling for your crappy site on HuffPo.

You can't honestly believe President Obama would approve of an email like that would you?

Maybe you would, seeing that you are commie, pinko someone who identifies with leftist powermongers.

Obama has spinelessly hidden behind his surrogates since he took office.
Of course Obama approved of it. But there'll never be a link back to it.

Wow. I shouldn't even respond to that garbage, but I will.

First, I don't "shill" for my "crappy site" here. I don't even remember the last time I mentioned it. Must have been well over a year ago, maybe more.

Second, well, everything about your comment virtually screams "I'm a member of the Obama can do no wrong" club, so... there's really nothing else to be said, since people like you are just sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming "la la la la la la" at the top of your voices whenever anyone dares to try to criticise this President or anything about his Administration.

Kind of like another Administration's diehard supporters I remember from not so long ago. It's creepy and sad.

I am convinced that the term "firebagger" as used by the Democrats displays that they are as unfamiliar with humor and nuance as the GOP. They don't really get why the other one is funny of multiple levels. This says a lot. Oh well. I am going to look into that new thingy they are doing on the web to select leaders. May as well hop on the next new thing since these guys obviously don't want my "left wing loony" help like before. They don't want it and I ain't givin' ... we agree. Finally.

Absolutely outrageous! Krugman has makes not pretense about being a politician. Mr. Obama himself is a political rookie who has risen to stardom because of his considerable charisma and rhetorical skills. Mr. Krugman is a brilliant economist who in fact deserved his Nobel Prize. It is a pity that Mr. Obama has eschewed Mr. Krugman's counsel, and it has cost all of us dearly that he has. These are bleak times.
