#BeingARedhead: Redhead Readers Respond

First Posted: 08/18/11 04:45 PM ET   Updated: 10/17/11 06:12 AM ET

Last week, I wrote about the perils (and hard-won joys) of having red hair: I had only an inkling of what great, and numerous, company I was in. We received such an overwhelming response from our fair-skinned naturally ginger-haired readers that we wanted to share them. Here are your takes on #beingaredhead. (And thanks, everyone, for the solidarity.)

@katiebindley ...I say it is a matter of embracing the red head within. I am a curly red head and would not have it any other way...

I can't see much benefit to wishing to be something I'm not, but if I could change something about myself I would LOVE to be a redhead (I know, hair dye). My husband is from Ireland and his brother, his wife and their children are all redheads, and so was his mother. My sister-in-law tells me about all the ginger jokes and I'm mystified. It's such beautiful hair color!

Oh, yeah, it's great being a redhead for the last 60+ years. You get to be the subject of every moronic joke non-redheads throw your way, you get called "ginger" (??), "carrot top", "pinkie", and other inane lables, you have to slather yourself with sunblock just to go outside or suffer second degree sunburns (and you can FORGET about the beach), you have an increased risk of skin cancer just for existing, you have a pasty white complexion while everyone else works on their tans....yeah, it's great. Wish I could do it all over again. NOT.
