Bill Clinton, Champion Of The Plant-Based Diet, Goes Vegan

Bill Clinton Vegan

First Posted: 08/18/2011 5:42 pm Updated: 10/18/2011 5:12 am

Bill Clinton is a vegan -- or is, at least, very close to being one.

The former U.S. president told CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta this week that he doesn't eat any dairy, eggs or meat, and consumes very little oil. He first opened up about his new plant-based diet last year to CNN's Wolf Blitzer. Clinton has turned to eating solely plants in order to keep weight off and his heart healthy.

Clinton -- who used to be a huge fan of hamburgers, steaks and other foods of the like -- underwent the diet overhaul to reverse the heart disease he's been plagued with in the past. He underwent a quadruple bypass surgery in 2004 because blood flow was blocked to his heart, and just last year he had to have two stents put into his heart to "open up veins from his bypass surgery," according to CNN.

Since his diet change, Clinton has lost more than 20 pounds, CNN reported. For the full interview, click here.

There have been numerous studies linking a veggie-heavy diet with good heart health. For example, research shows that fewer vegetarians than meat-eaters have metabolic syndrome, a condition where you possess three of five heart-risk factors, Everyday Health reported. The factors include high blood pressure, triglycerides and blood sugar, low "good" cholesterol and a large waist size.

In addition, research shows that a nutrient-dense, vegetarian-based diet can lower levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol.

Clinton joins the company of other vegan politicians and celebrities, including Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, "Biggest Loser" trainer Bob Harper, actress Olivia Wilde and even Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. Colorado Congressman Jared Polis -- while not a strict vegan or vegetarian -- keeps a meat product-free home with his vegan partner, Marlon Reis, Politico reported. And former Indiana Congressman Andrew Jacobs Jr. is a vegetarian, according to Vegetarian Times magazine.

Elizabeth Kucinich, wife of Rep. Dennis Kucinich, told Eating Well that her and her husband's vegan lifestyle is inspired by compassion for living things, sustainability and health.

"We're constantly traveling through different time zones. The vegan diet just gives us energy," Elizabeth Kucinich told Eating Well. "We're not trying to convert anyone, but we do talk about the benefits of the choices we've made."

While Clinton's diet change is rooted in health reasons, there are many other power-players who are turning to the vegan lifestyle for other reasons, Bloomberg Businessweek reported.

From Businessweek:

It shouldn't be surprising that so many CEOs are shunning meat, dairy, and eggs: It's an exclusive club. Only 1 percent of the U.S. population is vegan, partly because veganism isn't cheap: The cost comes from the value of specialty products made by speciality companies with cloying names (tofurkey, anyone?). Vegans also have to be powerful enough to even know what veganism is.

Veganism IS a cheap diet. I spend way less money now than I ever did when I was on on typical American diet. People have to be smart about it, shop at farmer's markets and get a dehydrater so you can make your own specialty snacks. Any diets can be expensive if you are trying to buy fancy products.

I got rid of television and went vegan in 2002, never looked back.

I feel so rich and healthy all the time and my stress levels are far, far down. I can't imagine eating meat now. The first thing I noticed after being off meat for a long period of time is how absolutely disgusting it smells. When walking into a restaurant about four months after going vegan I was blown away by how disgusting it smelled.
Really quite amazing.
I suppose I am not a true vegan in that I purchase leather belts, jackets and shoes. However, I've found several companies that obtain their leather the green and respectful way from animals. I'm not perfect, but I do what I can.
Leave meat behind and you'll be shocked.
Leave television behind and you'll turn happier.

Explain how you can obtain leather the green and respectful way from animals? Do they just hand you their skin?

Hey there, leather is not a necessity and frankly it is not even a luxury. It smells bad and has to be doped with chemicals for you to tolerate it. Very human indeed. Don't eat (skin) or wear leather and get breathable fabric for your couch. With material advancements there can be something superior to leather but there is no desire to develop it. No they won't give you their skin any quicker that you will give a lion yours. With a ban, leather should be priced appropriately on the black market so you pay more for it than cocaine ....should it be outlawed. You don't need leather and you don't need whips and hand cuffs either ...as for me, don't let me fool you I love a good steak ...hold the butter and give me a good helping of vegan side. I can do both ...be a vegan or not all in one meal! I don't chew them at the same time :-)

I"m so happy this info is starting to get out. It's radical stuff, akin to saying the world is round when everybody thinks its flat. People are going to start to understand (I hope) what a disaster animal products are from every angle -- health, environment and animal welfare. My dream is folks will start to realize there is more at stake than just whether something tastes good or not, which is not to say that plant foods don't taste good. They do! It just takes a while for the taste buds to change.

I used to love pizza, especially peperoni. After being vegan a couple years, the idea now makes me feel kind of ill.

That is very nice but there is nothing in our human history to say that being vegan is superior to eating a well balanced nutrition program. Neither is there evidence for this in research, because a well balanced nutrition program has never been pitched against being extreme like being vegan. I have seen a number of overweight vegetarians of various subtypes with weight and health problems because their nutrition did not work for them. It was all fixable with balancing their approach. Lesson: The body does not like extremes in any way----

Vegan isn't extreme, it's intelligent.

And there are several studies that support it is healthier. Meat companies don't want you to know this. Obviously.

Wow, raw honey is awesome for us! Not only is it good for our insides, it's a natural antibiotic for cuts on your skin. We use here all the time and it has a lot of nutrional value for us. God put bees on this earth for a reason and not to stay away from them, just as in animals! Man has destroyed them by adding their wisdom to everything. Meat gets contaminated by what man puts in it, antibiotics, hormones, etc.

Imagine what would have happenned if Clinton chased kale instead of tail back then!

The vegans I know smile a lot. Vegan restaurants should be frequented just to see what you are missing. You might even try a raw restaurant for your dining pleasure.

Good observation and true. And no obese folks either. I haven't even seen a raw restaurant but will definitely do a scouting trip.

Many people that come to my practice are overweight vegetarians. There's a vegan restaurant near the school where I teach. Every time I ate there my ankles would swell up like I'd had movie theater popcorn and I don't add table salt to my food. Finally had to stop eating there.

I believe in moderation in all things. Fanatically avoiding all animal products can be unhealthy just as fanatically eating only junk food. Unhealthy in different ways, mind you, but still, I've known some vegans/vegetarians who just don't eat enough of the right items and end up protein deficient as well as other essential vitamins/minerals. I've even known a couple of people who were instructed by their doctor to start eating meat again because their body just could not get enough proper nutrients from their vegetarian diet.

I'm not suggesting this would be true of everyone, but some people really are healthier with meat in their diets - in moderation, of course.

H G Wells averred that someday we will all be non-meat eaters.

Good for Bill Clinton. It is a healthy lifestyle and essential for those who have heart disease. I am vegetarian but do eat some dairy, and I easily keep my lipid panel numbers where they should be, as well as keep my weight down.

No reason to have meat in your diet. A healthy diet consists of beans, brown rice and other grains, veggies, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

I wonder what this says about the former POTUS's health. Behavior change is extremely hard to do and this is a major one. I suspect his doctors said he needs to take greater action to help manage his cardiac issues/challenges.

Dean Ornish originally advised Pres. Clinton to cut back on fat and get exercise. When that didn't work he referred him to Chamber Esselstyn. Essy had shown clinically what Collin Campbell found through research: more animal protein in the diet, more health issues.

Campbell lied. The Cornell-Oxford-China Project (aka The China Study) found that plant proteins had more associations with disease than animal protein.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, after the PUMAs spent so much time and energy trying to crucify Obama in the media for being an "elitist" just because he once mentioned that he liked arugula.
