HP Touchpad, Palm Pre, And Other Hewlett-Packard Devices To Say Goodbye To (PICTURES)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/18/11 07:00 PM ET   Updated: 10/18/11 06:12 AM ET

In discontinuing its tablet and webOS phone hardware lines, Hewlett-Packard is killing off several pieces of hardware that it had just released.

HP's newest devices weren't exactly tearing up the marketplace. According to one report, Best Buy had ordered 270,000 HP Touchpad tablets and only sold 25,000 of them; a March 2011 comScore report said that HP's WebOS was being used by about 3 percent of smartphone users, badly trailing phone operating systems by Google, RIM, Apple and Microsoft.

Below is our HP Graveyard, the smartphones and tablet (oh, there's one big tablet) that were around for the HP death spiral. WebOS, the Palm/HP operating system might be sticking around, but we definitely won't be seeing these HP gadgets anymore, so take your time to grieve and say goodbye to these gizmos.

Send not to know for whom the bell tolls, HP and Palm devices; it tolls for thee:

The HP Pre 2
1 of 7
On your Palm Pre 2, you could play 3D games, watch Adobe videos in your Flash-capable browser on your 3.0-inch multitouch touchscreen, and send emails and texts on a slide-out physical keyboard. Released in October 2010, it was the first Palm phone released by HP following its $1.2 billion purchase of Palm in April of the same year.

This HP Device
Won't miss it.
Sad to see it go.

wow those were some thick phones. and what's with the hardware keyboards? it's like they somehow got a misleading memo telling them to copy the blackberry instead of the iPhone.

They should stay in the Compuyter Business as I have been using HP software for BiG Business and it's STINKS! They are magnitudes BEHIND anyone in developing software. HP has NO IDEA how to code any software. It's interfaces are so klunky and helter skelter it's a horror to even try to use it! Their software is more closely related to the original "VisICalc" than to the software being released in 2011. I'd sell off my stock in HP if I had any, they are definately going to go OUIT OF BUSINESS if they think they can develop big business software like Oracle, IBM & Micosoft!

HP is also missing the Boat on 3d printers and Micro manufacturing trends that are emerging.. A Metal jet printer would be awesome..Print up a new engine..

HP is said to be following in the footsteps of IBM, by getting out of hardware.

Actually, they have more in common with Xerox, in their inability to capitalize on innovation.

I don't see the Slate, are they keeping that?

I love my original Pre. My contract with Sprint is up and I will try to keep it running as long as possible. I was waiting to buy a TouchPad until the Pre3 found a home. The synchronicity capabilities were the first step toward the next evolution of the phones and tablets. Build the smarts into the tablet and make the phone an extension of that. Why duplicate the processing power?

I like WebOS and its ease of use. And, I have never seen a Pre screenshot on damnyouautocorrect.com . That one site is the best argument against using an iPhone.

If I can pick one up for $50, I'd use it as a presentation device. As long as I can play Mac generated content on it, and disable all the other junk that comes on it.

I really enjoyed using webOS on Sprint but the hardware was poorly designed. This is surely a big loss for HP. $1.2 billion down the drain.

I think your mistaken. Jumping on the bandwagon is very much a viable business plan. Just ask Motorola, Samsung and HTC about how well they've done with Android.....

Why don't they consult REAL PEOPLE when making these things? Was it too hard to come up with a GOOD product--instead of trying to do a cheaper version of the IPad, why didn't they focus on putting out something that we would use--for those of us uncaring about the "cachet" of the IPad?

I mean, touch screen pad small enough to carry in a medium sized handbag, with a stylus so you could "Write"on the notepad app/program, that with one click gets saved and/or translated (handwriting recognition), cameras, basic "Word-like" program with a thin, flexible, snap-on/wrap keyboard, thumb drive/memory card ports, Wi-Fi and a reader...and there you go...Voila! I'd buy it.

And still, these Nimrods, having discontinued the line, offers only $100 discount on stock that's left--even if the whole thing is a legit tax write-off (which they WILL claim!) Waste of CEO space...There are small biz people who could run rings around these goatheads.

Apple can get away with charging $600 for their tablets, because their laptops are twice as much. If you're not a Mac fanboy, why would you pay $500/$600 for a tablet when you could get a PC laptop for the same price?

"Again, there is no word on what HP (or Best Buy) will do with the leftovers."

BestBuy will knock down the current $499.99 down to $479.99 and then market them as being 40% off retail price

I just looked on Bestbuy.com and it says they are sold out online.

I wonder if BestBuy yanked them temporarily... Another story on HUFFPO about the HP tablets said BestBuy had 200,000 of them in stock. I found that number a bit high though.. Not sure the accuracy.

All major non-iPad tablets will fail because companies are being really stupid about the pricing. They have to significantly undercut Apple's price and offer the same thing if not better. They have to do the same in the MP3/Smartphone sections as welle. It can be done because these things do not cost a lot to make or to mass produce. The first major company that does that will see traction in the market for their device. They have to give up massive profits for market share for a time. They have to think long term and not short term greed.

That's kind of short sighted. Lots of other companies have compelling business plans and while the OSes are still nowhere near ready for primetime, it's silly to just assume none of them will develop well. In particular, tablets with a full-blown OS have a great chance to challenge the iPad if they can master the hardware as well.

Apple has the edge but I wouldn't be happy to see Apple dominate any market. I think their pricing is a bit steep for what they offer. Then again I am one of those people who prefer functionality over aesthetics.
