Abandoned Dog Near Highway Eludes Rescuers (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/21/11 09:44 PM ET Updated: 10/19/11 06:12 AM ET

A dog in Stockton, California has been been hiding near a highway bridge and eluding animal rescuers for days. According to the video from CBS Local News in Sacramento, the dog was likely abandoned by the side of the road.

Dog trainer Lisa Dubois said the dog "is waiting for the owner to come back."

Dubois and others' attempts to corner the dog, on a grassy hill near an overpass, have so far been unsuccessful. With heavy traffic just feet from the dog's hiding spot, animal control officials are concerned about the safety of motorists.

Dubois and other concerned citizens hope officials will close the bridge temporarily to retrieve the dog.

The past few months have seen some heartwarming, and often miraculous, dog rescues. In June, technology helped one pet owner in Minnesota reunite with her lost dog.

Natural disasters take a tremendous toll on humans and their property, but dogs often prove themselves to be quite resilient. This spring, a dog was found floating on a roof over a mile from shore after the tsunami hit Japan.

Three weeks after tornadoes devastated parts of Alabama, a brave little dog returned home after dragging himself on two broken legs for an unknown distance.

Some animals shelters are getting creative, with ideas such as doggy "speed dating" to find loving homes for helpless dogs.

In Thailand, over one thousand dogs were recently rescued from dog traffickers. The dogs, which were destined for a dinner table, were kept in tiny cages.

That's b.s. nothing can be done. If this isn't the dog catcher's job what is? Block off the road for a few minutes & come back with a rabbies pole to lasso around her neck. She's clearly not that wild you can't get near her. Put out a trap overnight with some food in (I know they make them for cats. I'm sure they make them for small dogs.) This is their job. Lets demand they do it. This sweet little old girl deserves that much.

I hope someone reading this will recognize this dog and post the owners on the wall of shame. What a P.O.S. I think there should be a billboard put up by the bridge with their picture on it that says, "I dumped my dog here." Whoever did this should get dumped somewhere....

it angers me when ppl have the audacity to just dump a life anywhere :(

"Dog trainer Lisa Dubois said the dog "is waiting for the owner to come back."

Ugh. This is not the statement of a professional dog trainer, who wouldn't try to state the dog's thought process as fact.

Cak9,
I can believe what the dog trainer is talking about, I adopted a dog that had been abused from the animal shelter 5 years ago and He will cry If I leave him alone long because He is scared that I will leave him, I don't think he will ever get over being left in a abandoned house for days and then being in the shelter for almost two weeks. He is and has been a great dog and I am so glad that I have him. It really says something about You when You write Ugh about what the dog trainer said then about the lousy person that dumped this poor dog out like trash.

Cesar, the dog whisperer could get this dog to come to him.He does live in Cali.
Too bad the orignal owner who dumped this little guy off on the side of the road doesn't have a change of heart and comes back to get get him. The older dog just wants his owner back.

get somebody with a tranquilizer gun out there, put up a short temporary fence beforehand so the dog cannot get into the road.

I think it will be a good Samaritan who eventually rescues the dog though... Everyday volunteers seem to do the most good with abandoned animals. My father never met a stray or abandoned kitten that he didn't either bring home or find a loving home for.

Irrespective of my inability to relate to domesticated cats - a good man. For me it is torture to go to the pet sanctuary. I'd return with the car full of dogs. So I just go there at regular intervals - mainly in the winter though - to deliver dog (and cat) food and sometimes warm blankets so they'll have their bellies full and be comfortable during those cold winter nights. I'm sure my dog knows that I look after his (our) brethren.

Shame on the people who dumped the poor dog in the first place! These heartless people have the idiotic notion that domestic pets like cats and dogs can just "go back to their natural habitat" and frolic through the wilderness. I would like to see how these same people would fare if they were dropped into the woods with no survival training. There is really no reason or excuse for abandoning some poor companion animal. I wish animal control every success in saving the poor dog.

I live out in the counrty, this happens a lot down here. Unfortunally most of them get shot, run over, or eaten by the coyotes. Very few of them live to "fend for themselves" or become someones companion.

Me too. One of our rescues was an abandoned dog like this one and it took animal control 3 days to get him in the shelter. It took 4 people to get him in our car but now he loves car rides.

Chasing a dog or cat is useless as they are afraid. It is typical of humans to force an animal to conform to their wishes. If there were a patient volunteer, it would be best just to wait and sit in the area. Leave food. Let him come to you.
The patient way has worked for me several times.

What a crappy person who just left their dog like this and what crappy so-called "animal control." One officer and one attempt. That is not animal control that is more like being payed for wanting to do nothing on the job.

I will be praying that this has a happy ending. My heart just breaks for this poor dog.

Do you realize how underfunded and understaffed AC departments are? In addition to this case, there are likely dozens of other stray animals, injured animals, dangerous dog reports and other cases that have to be addressed.

Maybe you could volunteer your time and do a better job?
05:39 PM on 08/25/2011
CAK9, The reason AC department gave was not short of stuff or lack of fund but because they didn’t think it was important to rescue this dog. The reason they gave was that “people’s life is more important than an animal”, while the fact is that there IS a potential danger to the motorists who pass that road if the dog bolts out, especially at night. It is not sound excuse not to do all of the cases just because there are other cases in their hands or simply make one attempt for each case and easily give up. What kind of work ethic is that?

That's the trouble with no-k ill shelters.

They fill up with animals and then stop their in-take.

I have been at a large city's humane society and heard them tell callers that they could not accept any more animals.

This video is what desperate people do.

I get too upset.
